The Scariest Comic Books of All Time! – In the Deep

A reader named Chris S. suggested that I devote October to the scariest comic books of all-time, as suggested by you readers out there! Sounds like a plan to me! So all October-long, I’ll be featuring 31 comic book tales of terror, based on YOUR suggestions! So e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com your scary suggestions! Here is an archive of all the comics featured so far!

Commenter rev sully suggested “In the Deep,” from 1978’s Creepy #101. Written by Bruce Jones and drawn by Richard Corben, this Jaws-inspired tale had the following effect on rev scully:

Scared. The. Still. -Forming. Poo. Out. Of. Me. It was the Jaws rip off issue and I was a kid when I read this. Hoo boyee was this macabre & gross & didn’t I keep going back and re-reading all the stories…I later picked up a copy of this again after my 2nd Renaissance with comics. now in my adult life and it features art by Richard Corben. Damn. No wonder why it was sooo…spooky.

The story opens with a man discovered drifting in the ocean. His hands are clasped tight around something. But what?

We then see the harrowing experience of this man and his wife (who cannot swim)…

Scary stuff.

I won’t spoil the twist as to what is in his clasped hands, but I think you can make an educated guess (it is quite gross).

AW spoil away!!!! ;-)

I can’t make out what’s happening in the next to last panel. I see the flock of gulls, but they appear to be inside some shape that I can’t make out.

Bham, it appears to be a silhouette of the couple kissing.

I don’t think I’ll be able to find this comic, so I don’t mind either if someone spoils it.

I’d rather you “spoil” too. This is not exactly going to be an easy find in the average comic book store, and I’m curious if I’m right.

Awesome! I feel as though I won a MARVEL No-Prize! Thanks Brian Cronin!!! :)
I get the “scully” thing a lot too.
Sometimes it’s worse.
RevSulu is one.
and the gawd-awful worst is “Rev Sukky” who I think is my Earth-3 analogue. ;P

@BHam, I’ve been making sense of that panel since I was a kid. I think that shape containing the thrashing, feeding gulls is the silhouette of the couple kissing and I presume the background of the image is the roiling ocean.
if you knew what was in his hands…wow. Happy Hallowe’en! Happy Samhain! Slainte!

IIRC, Heavy Metal reprinted this story in a Richard Corben one-shot they published in 1998. Lots and lots of spooky stuff in there.

odds are what the guy is clutching proably is all that is left of his ordeal and battle with the shark. or worse something to do with peggy

I’m not spoiling it (I haven’t read it) but, “Feel my heart? Whatever happens, don’t let anybody or anything take it from you.”

That was my thought. Tear up the planks! It is the beating of the hideous heart!

For those wanting just to read this comic {and bonus IN COLOR!} this link goes to it
the ending was not wut i thought lol
