The Line It Is Drawn #63 – Comic Book Super Bands!!!
Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!
I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.
Now on to the bit!
So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SEVEN blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!
To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 7:00 AM Pacific, Friday, October 28th).
Next week’s theme is…
Team-up or mash-up a comic book character with a Walt Disney character (as Caanan correctly pointed out to me the other day, we did strictly Marvel/Disney mash-ups, but now let’s do a broader Disney mash-up!
Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!
Name four comic book characters. Our artists will then put those characters in a band. Our artists will decide what kind of band the characters will be in.
Enjoy!
I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.
All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!
No George this week, so Sean will fill-in!
2011 Eisner Award nominee caanan suggested:
Invincible, Superboy, Spider-Man & Static
Michael “Mic?” Magtanong is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

Here‘s the same piece colored differently by Nick.

Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Will Eisner, and Alan Moore in a band together (because they are quite the characters).

NJDevil63 suggested:
my suggestion for “The Line It Is Drawn” is Catwoman, Emma Frost, Power Girl and Mystique…a comic book version of the Spice Girls.
Caanan Grall is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

slafaive suggested:
Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Damian Wayne
Daniel Irizarri is the artist for this one. Here is his website.
Great work, everybody! Thanks to our artists for their amazing work and thanks to the suggestion givers for their ideas! Now go make suggestions for next week!
Also, if you want to see your artwork featured on the blog, send me a jpg of a drawing mashing=up/teaming-up a comic book character with a horror character (whether it be movies, books, TV, etc.) by by 9am Pacific time on Monday, October 31st and I will post all the submissions as a Halloween edition of our Reader Art Gallery!

Chaz – Stan Lee as Freddy Mercury = brilliance
Daniel – love the look on Damian’s face and Jason would definitely have to be the bassist…he has the goofy aspect to him (sorry bass players)

If only Aunt May had been included as “Old Spice” in the Spicy Girls entry!
The lyrics on the big brains piece are spectacular!

Granted, I only read it by the trades, but isn’t Invincible a white guy?

And, what? No Robin in the boy band?

Oh God, “Old Spice” is a good enough suggestion to warrant a revision. Canaan, can you squeeze her in somehow, haha

Grodrillaz: This looks fun, except… I can hardly tell the monkeys apart. Must be the lack of colors. And who is the Raccoon? Why is it there?
Invincible, Superboy, Spider-Man & Static: Yeah, I can see them as the typical Boy Band. I wish Mic hadn’t used the current Superboy’s costume, though, it sucks. (Static’s on the other hand, rules.) Best drawn piece this week.
Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Doktor Sleepless and Lex Luthor: This is the best done one (though I didn’t like Perks art here, for once.) The added song gives it the points to win.
Catwoman, Emma Frost, Power Girl and Mystique: OK, I’m not getting the Joke of why Power Girl is the only one without a Spicy name. Otherwise, seeexy!!
Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Will Eisner, and Alan Moore: I was going to protest about these not being really comic book characters but then I remembered ALL of them have had comic books appearances (especially Stan and Jack) so I’ll accept it. Plus, well done.
Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Damian Wayne: I’m surprised this joke hasn’t been done before. Good job!

What, no one suggested a band made up of The Thing, Concrete, Korg, Rockslide, Badrock, Brick House and the Grey Gargoyle? They’d rock!

Man, you guys are all awesome! Love all the ideas and executions. And if anyone has read my Max Overacts, you’d know I love me some rhyming, so, Nick – AWESOME!
Sijo, Power Girl is MSG, because – well – technically MSG isn’t a spice, it’s a flavour ‘enhancer’.

Do you know I once made french fries for Chris O’Donnell? True story. Brush with fame right there. Should’ve called him Robin, or thrown out a “hoo-WAH,” but I decided to keep my job instead.
Love the work this week boys! Mad props to Nick for rocking out some lyrics as well. I imagine their sound is somewhat reminiscent of Devo at it’s peak.
Sijo, that’s rocket raccoon. My pick this week actually was Detective Chimp, Gorilla Grodd, Bufkin from Fables, and Rocket Raccoon
I incorporated Beppo and Blip from Mike’s suggestions, but I confused Brian with my surplus of monkeys!

As usual, Caanan Grall knocks it out of the freaking park. “All Spice” indeed!

How much do I love Damian as a kid-drummer, a la the drummer for Crash and the Boys in “Scott Pilgrim”?
Oh, I guess I have to answer that, since I wrote it as a question. The answer is a bunch.

Does “Walt Disney character” include Touchstone Pictures characters like Jack Sparrow Jack Skellington or The Rocketeer ?
Brian Cronin

I always got the impression Invincible’s mom was hispanic. So I would expect him to have a darker complexion than Superboy, but maybe not that dark. Who cares, though, it’s a nice drawing.

The boy band one is trying to remain current with the new costumes and there’s going to be a black Invincible soon hence his darker complexion.
I’m so glad my Comics Creators band got picked. It was a shot in the dark, but it worked!
Thanks again, you guys!

Seah, love your interpretation of my request, and the 60s Monkees vibe you gave them. The Fez on Grodd is a hoot.

All these were pretty sweet, guys. Nice work.
I’d imagine the scientist guys would have a sound kinda like Kraftwerk.

Allison Blaire on vocals, Roy Harper on Drums, Mal Ducan on trumpet and Rick Jones on guitar would have been my line up.

Canaan needs to revise with Aunt May as Old Spice….it’s be funny to have her on drums, but spice girls are all vocals so ah well.

Sick sick job, fellas!! I’m glad to be the opening act for y’all! And man! What a privilege to have picked the rock star Eisner Award Nominee’s suggestion!
KABE: Robin left the group citing creative differences. He wanted to steer the band into a rock ‘n roll direction, but the others refused. So he left the bubble gum group to join legendary band, The Chris O’Donnell Experience. Superboy replaced him in Variant Edition. It’s all sure to be a VH1 documentary 10 years from now.
Thanks for the shout, SIJO & MECHA! Glad y’all digs!
Peace.
