The Line it is Drawn Try-Out Week 1, Group 1

Welcome to the first batch of drawings by artists who are trying out to see if they can nab a spot as one of the regular The Line it is Drawn artists!

All day, I’ll be posting entries in groups of 20 artists an entry. Check their work out and marvel at all the great talent on display here. Then, next week, after these artists do a second drawing, we’ll ask you all to vote on your favorites. I’ll also have a group of judges vote for their favorites. I’ll combine the votes and we’ll end up with the two new regular artists for The Line it is Drawn. We’ll also be picking out one regular alternate artist for the Line it is Drawn, but I’ll let you know how we’re picking that artist a little later on.

So kick back and check out some nifty artwork, all based on the same theme as The Line it is Drawn this week, which was “Turn a famous person/character into a superhero or supervillain.”

Enjoy!

I’m listing the pieces in the order I received them. There are way too many to credit all the suggestion givers, but if you recognize one of your suggestions, feel free to mention it in the comments if you’d like credit!

Nice work by all, but my favourits were the Elmo-as-Kruger (like Elmo’s not nightmare fuel enough on his own, now he has claws), Abraham Lincoln as the Emancipator (Sic Semper Tyrannosaurus is genius!) and Hunter S. Thomson as the Freak (so much to love about that piece, but the Sheriff’s badge takes the cake).

Stupid typos. Should say “favourites”. :)

I’m loving this. These are all great, Elmo is my favourite, I think, although I gotta say the Neil Gaiman one is a good likeness!

In this batch I’d say David Ryan, Aaron Pittman, Paul Shinn, Cory Stauffer, Rufus, Josh Gowdy and Christoffer Cerdic were all the stand outs!

So much art candy, though my favourites are Immaculate, the Goddamn Marple (pardon?) and the Freak.

Man, Brian… why not do this EVERY week? Mwu ha HA. ;)

“Goddamn Marple” is the winner for me, but the Hunter S. Thompson piece is super-cool.

Woah! I suggested Miss Marple, but this result is so full of little in-jokes about that series (POIROT! NEMESIS! NEPHEW RAYMOND!), as well as All-Star Batman, that I’m blown away! WIN.

Wow, Medellin’s Elmo. Pittman’s Lone Wolf and Cub and Cardenas’s Abe are my faves, but there’s some great stuff here all around.

Excellent artists all around.
Ryan, Pittman, Cardenas, Gott and Gowdy were my favorites.

Wow, I’m in good company here! How do you choose? So much crazy going on!

@kevinmadison & buttler: Thanks for the nice words! Much appreciated.

The Smoking man is my Favorite

Canaan & Ithinkyoureok- thanks for the comments! I’m a big fan of the books so had to sneak in that reference (the books with Mr.RafURL are my faves :) )

Yowch. You expect us to choose?

Sic Semper Tyrannosaurus. There’s your winner!

Woot, A-Team and Andy Kaufman were my suggestions. It’s going to take some time to inspect each one for a sure vote. @_@ Wow, such variety

Josh Gowdy for the win! I love the Hunter S. Thompson piece!

Wow! It’s definitely an honor being amongst such amazing talent! That Elmo sure is creepy.

I’m glad someone besides myself has recognized the great superhero potential of Mary Richards/Mary Tyler Moore. Her powers include:

- Turning the world on with a smile
- Making nothing dates seem suddenly worthwhile
- Causing time to stop by tossing her hat in the air
- With her teammates, merging into an unstoppable ‘gestalt” through the famous “Group Hug” technique
-The ability to transform into an adorable kitten, decades before ‘Surprised Kitty” turned everyone’s brains into sentimental mush

Few villains are able to withstand her relentless cheeriness!

Andy Kaufman is really, really good.

Aaron Pittman show’s a lot of promise with that Lone Wolf and Cub piece. Another good one was the Immaculate cover. that and the Hunter S. Thompson piece are just fantastic.

Neil Gaiman as Marvelman is awesome!

And yeah, Elmo!

-Scott

Some of the stand outs for me, were The Andy Kaufman hero/villian piece. The Emancipator Abraham Lincoln. Elmo Krueger was scary. The A-Team was good. And the Hunter S. Thompson as the Freak

Oh, damn. Kauffman and Hunter Thompson are so fine. So so fine.

I vote for Aaron PIttman! Great take on Lone Wolf & Cub!

Josh Hardy, Axel Medillen, and Aaron Pittman are my favorites. I especially love Hardy, who looks like he has a style with a lot of swagger in it.

My god, the level of “drawing” skills from this group is just horrible. You can´t be serious about publishing any of these guys.

@manny, @Caanan, and @Daniel Thanks a lot! I’m glad you like it!

Aaron Pittman get’s mine. Super Rad.

Aaron Pittman IS THE MAN

I like Aaron Pittman and Don Cardenas in this group.

After looking through all of the entries, Christoffer Cerdic’s Cigarette Smoking Man is the one that stands out to me one day later. Perfect execution.

I could see him taking on Too Much Coffee Man…. ; )

Nice work from everyone. My favorites are:
- Josh Gowdy’s Hunter S. Thompson piece. The figure drawing is great. Thompson is really in character. Plus, the details are really clever.
- Cory Stauffer’s Andy Kaufman piece. I love the composition and the depth of the pop culture reference.
- Axel Medellin’s Elmo. This is too funny.

Love the Hunter S Thompson, shouldn’t his super alter ego be “Gonzo” though? whatever, Josh gets my vote!

Richard Grzela, Paul Shinn, Axel Medellin, Josh Gowdy, Christoffer Cerdic all get my vote ..

Marple, Hunter S. Thompson, and Andy Kaufman are the winners for me out of this group.

Aaron Pittman, Josh Gowdy and Cristoffer.

Josh gowdy and christopher cedric stand out for me…

Loving Gowdy, Jarin, Ryan and Pittman contributions
