Cover Theme Game for 1/4
Every Wednesday you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” etc.
In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.
If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).
One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything!
If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!
Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.
Good luck and enjoy!

I’ll let you know right off the bat that this is one of the trickier ones we’ve had. I figured it best to start the new year with a tough one. It is especially tough for folks outside of the States. So be forewarned! For U.S. folks, it is definitely “gettable” – just a real toughie.

Every time I think, maybe I’ll get this one. NO!
I think the only one or two I’ve gotten, it was basically given away to me, either in the comments or something.
That Tubby cover is obscene.

Try again, Travis! There was a mistake with the images. It showed the images for January 4th of LAST year, not this year. It is fixed now.

Y’know, I was gonna say, that set looked familiar.
Lemme take a look here at this batch. Yeah, it didn’t help. Ugh. I’ll wait until next week….

Cable seems to be holding that big gun in a very suggestive manner in the corner box!

So after careful study and long thought, my answer is “uhhhhhhhhhhhh”.

“They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!”
That made me LOL.

Ah, my old friend “They all feature a man!”
How I’ve missed you.

The third cover is pretty amusing. There’s like every kind of weapon in that image. I also think it’s funny that those two guys are fighting with each other when they’re about to be blown up by a bunch of missiles.

The first one is issue 1 of 4. The second is #6 of 9. The third is part 2 of 4 of “The “Nemesis Contract” arc.

Sorry. The Wolverine comic book is #1 of 3, not 4.

Who did the third cover anyway? They’re trying damned to be Jack Kirby, I’ll tell that much.

Al three characters have had a “new” face?
Is that Archangel in the first?
If I recall, the male in the Sin City one has a different face than earlier (plastic surgery?).
And the Punisher (Frank Castle) was once a black man (for 3 issues n the early 90′s).

@garbonzo: That is not Archangel.
You refer to Dwight. That’s not Dwight. He doesn’t appear in this volume.
That’s not the Punisher. The cover even tells you who the character really is.

@TomerS: That’s presumably why Brian left the guess up, because it was SOO wrong. heh
Actually, if that’s not Archangel, who am it?
@Benn, I assume the Cable cover is by Ladronn, and oh yes, he tried his damnedest to be Kirby. Did pretty well. Check out the Spider-Boy Team-Up from the second batch of Amalgam, really good stuff.

@Travis: Apparently, he’s called Brom, a member of S.T.R.I.K.E.

I don’t have an answer, but Wolverine looks like he’s having a really painful bathroom experience in that top cover.
