The Line It Is Drawn #73 – Comic Book Characters In Different Eras

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 9:00 AM Pacific, Friday, January 20th).

The topic is…

Team-up or mash-up comic book characters with characters from NickToons (here is a list of NickToons to help you out).

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Place comic book characters into different time periods. Caveman Superman, Victorian Wonder Woman, Civil War Batman, etc.

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Haha, oh jeez, Nick, what can I say? Wow.
And for the record her sidekick is ‘Mastodon Joe’ (ie a prehistoric version of Monkey Joe)

Uh…Doreen? (I’ll be in my bunk.)

Luckily, Green Lantern is an experienced tea-bagger. :)

i think Squirrel Girl is my favorite for this week, though.

Wow. You guys all brought it this week. Excellent work, fellas.

Hey, caught up with TLIID early, for once! :)

#1-Hah, I’ve been waiting for that joke since Booster Gold came out. This is Chaz’s best picture yet (of the sane ones I mean! ;) )

#2- Neither SG nor Shanna are favorites of mine, but this was both funny and very well drawn- but then again, it’s Perks.

#3- However, it’s this pne I think is the best drawn this week. Great attention to detail! Too bad it had to have such dark colors (is it an homage to an actual Supergirl cover? It looks familiar.) Good work Mic.

#4- Now this one, I like the basic idea, but the art itself looks a little crude to me. May be the inking.

#5-Hah! Talking about cover homages! You know I always wondered wtf that Golden Age GL cover where he “caught” a fairy tale type witch was all about. Was it about fairy tales coming to life? I haven’t seen the story.

#6- The ImperiaL Avengers? Weren’t those Mulan and her friends? ;D

Great batch this week! Congrats veveryone! :)

Awesome. I especially like Supergirl and GL.

I’m at a serious disadvantage for suggesting anything for next week, as I’m sooo the wrong generation. I’ve seen Zim and some Ren & Stimpy, but that’s it. I look forward to seeing what people come up with, though!

Scarlet Witch in the Salem Witch Trials! dangit, why do i always think of ideas AFTER it’s too late? lol.

Cap’s red, white, and blue seems out of place in the Imperial Chinese Avengers. Iron Man looks like he’s been turned into the Mandarin.

Uh… Nick… am I seeing things… or does Doreen’s right bosom have ears… and a nose… wow.

Wow.. i have never looked at this blog before. i am a believer now. the asian Avengers made me think of the first few issues of the Avengers title done by George Perez in 1998. I dug celtic Supergirl as well. i will be looking at more in the comming weeks.

Fear not, it has already been drawn!

Yes, that’s right, it’s a time-traveling Wanda and Spidey vs. Cotton Mather!

Good crop this week and excellent theme and ideas. I like ‘em all, but for some reason that Supergirl one is infinitely intriguing.

I would read that Supergirl book. In fact, just drop the ‘S’ and call her something different and you’ve got your first subscriber.

that avengers one is awesome.

Yeah, I would be interested in reading that Supergirl book. Also liking the Chinese Iron Man.

“Celtic Supergirl” left me breathless. Quite a feat, since it’s just a picture. And I’m not one for hyperbole, the thing was LITERALLY so awe-inspiring that I had to catch my breath after looking at it. Is this the magic of the Druids at work?

As good as every picture is (and I do mean every picture, they’re all awesome), Celtic Supergirl is my favourite. It looks like it’s out of a real comic book, and I too would read the heck out of said comic. Wonderful, just wonderful – I can’t stop staring at it!

All fabulous! Just wonderful.

I LOVE Puritan Green Lantern.

Wow. Just wow, guys! Some really good work this week!

Chaz, GREAT rendering of a pretty neat idea that I wish I would have thought of! (and the gold tooth in his mouth was something I didn’t catch until my second viewing but was a nice little touch)

Nick, that is pretty danged cool. I kind of wish there had been more greenery in it to really make her stand out but that is a extremely minor, minor nitpick of a excellent image. Good job, sir!

Steve, you, sir, are the man and don’t let anyone tell you differently. I had originally thought of a Boudica-like figure when I made the suggestion, but you really took it and ran with it, shattering my notion and making something far superior.

Sean, I think I see what you were doing with yours. It isn’t “simple” (as someone else commented on) – I think you were trying to evoke the looks of the old tintype images that were often hand-colored, hence the silhouette border around it. I LOVED it! The period army uniform (with that unique belt) was great as was the mechanical horror he was fighting.

Brendan, out of all the suggestions I made – I really didn’t think anyone would bite on the Puritan but I’m glad you did. It was a completely outlandish idea and you took it over the line with the tea bag joke. It’s so wrong but in such a good way! Thank you, sir!

Mic, your Chinese Avengers is awesome! LOVE that Mandarin Hulk and that Thor looks like he could step out of a martial arts flick. I do have to agree with the red, white and blue color scheme on Cap though is a bit… odd. I’m really not sure how else you could have done him though and still have him recognizable though. But, again, minor nitpick of a terrific image!

I’m probably hosed next week as the only Nick Toons I really watch is the occasional episode of Fairly Oddparents but I’ll give it my best.

It actually bothers me severely that the booster gold thing isn’t a real comic.

for the first one booster gold, it looks like you didnt properly close the blockquote. it is messing up the rest of the page.

celtic supergirl is boss.

Not familiar with Brendan Tobin’s work, but love his Puritan GL. The best of the bunch imo.

Randypan, welcome abroad and do yourself a favor: look through the archives at past TLiDs. Some very original and inspired drawings that’ll get you through the day.

As for this week’s:

49er Booster Gold? *snicker*

Squirrel Girl coming down a hill with a huge partner right at you? This may be more scary than her “Mr. Peanut snack” picture…

Steve, that Supergirl is “Elseworlds”-level nice man!

Sean, that OMAC looks a lil like Churchill from Smith’s Doctor Who which got me doing a double take. Nice!

GL teabagged a witch…. The joke writes itself…

and I have to agree with other commenters, the Imperial Avengers do have that Busiek/Perez feel (when Morgan Le Fey used the Scarlet Witch and the Norn Stones to alter reality). Thanks Mic? ….

abroad? giggle…..I meant aboard….stupid typos…

Mic? Name all your characters! I know you have! TELL ME! That one Guy is totally the Iron Mandarin!

Great work on all accounts, I am always amazed at the work of my fellow TLiiDists! You guys are the best.

Celtic Super Girl is going to have a show down with Centurion Kal and it will be awesome. Such a moody piece filled with tension! Great work!

Great work again by everyone, and thanks to all of you for the kind comments on my Supergirl pic :)

I love the perspective on the Supergirl piece, very dramatic.

also nearly forgot to say thanks Sean for the Centurion Kal idea, it did work a treat

Amazing work! I especially like Celtic Supergirl. I would read that title.

As for a new suggestion, we’ve all seen a variety of future versions of Marvel/DC superheroes, both dystopic (Maestro) and utopic (Batman Beyond) – how about futuristic versions of Dark Horse/Indie Characters?

Am I the only one who went ‘Holy crap Chinese Thor is HAWT!!’. I adore the The Avengers of Imperial China, reminds me of Dynasty Warriors to boot.

That Avengers one is fantastic!

Also: Nicktoons? Really?

[…]  Comic Book Resources’ “The Line It Is Drawn!” weekly art challenge, which this week got artists to imagine latter-day heroes in other time […]

Dammit, I will NOT join Twitter! Stop trying to make me, internet. All I know is someone better do a good Zim mash-up (Martian Manhunter, maybe?).

CHAZ: I love Skeets! haha

NICK: I can totally picture an animated .gif of BIG MIKE cheesing from ear-to-ear finishing off that piece. ;D

STEVE: Hot redesign!! Love the braid.

SEAN: OMACtivate! F’n fresh, bro! :D Most excellent translation of the mohawk.

BRENDAN: Disturbingly awesome!

Thanks for the love for my piece, y’all! I can’t stop smiling reading the reactions.

I went back-and-forth w/ blue and black for The Immortal Captain, but I decided to go with the blue and chalked it up to “coincidence” that he shares a similar color theme w/ Captain America. Attire was very colorful back in the era I chose anyway so I didn’t find it to be too much of a stretch. Now I would change his stars, though, into pentagrams to reflect a more Wu Xing aesthetic.

RANDYPAN & DARYLL: You guys make me wanna read the Busiek/Perez AVENGERS story now! :D I gotta hunt for that.

SEAN: lol “Iron Mandarin” sounds too good to pass up! Much better than the tentative “Invincible Iron” I cooked up. The others I considered are Immortal Captain, Mighty Thunder, & Emerald Mountain… all in Chinese, though.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Y’all made it really hard to choose this week cuz they were SO GOOD. I promise. Ultimately, I have to give the big shout-out to ITHINKYOUREOK for the irresistible suggestion!

NickToons Week… here we come! See you there!

Peace.

Mic, indeed I was quite pleased to see this particular Cave girl… In fact, I suggest you take a peek at Nick’s sketch gallery and check out the alternate takes he did. I loves me some squirrelly cheesecake.

[…] Steve Howard took part in CBR’s latest The Line It Is Drawn where users were asked to place superheroes in different eras. Check out the site for a Puritan […]

I really want to see the Imperial Chinese Avengers explored more.
