3 Chicks Review Comics – Episode 034

Inside this episode! We review Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin’s Princeless #3, and an Advance Review of Joe Keatinge and Ross Campbell’s Glory #23.  We also talk about the hotly contested Wonder Woman #8 cover, which is stirring up a surprising amount of controversy.  We then have an interview with the wonderfully charming and incredibly talented Duane Swierczynski, who’s writing one of our favorite DC books – Birds of Prey! Lastly, we give Chick of the Week to the late Kim Yale, and discuss Sue’s efforts to revive the Kim Yale Award which sadly became defunct with the dissolving of Friends of Lulu last year.

*As always beware of spoilers if you haven’t read the books in question!

I have an unusual comic/graphic novel that falls far outside the mainstream (a one-off, 30-page, humorous, woman-centered philosophical adventure embedded in a selection of short stories) but people are intrigued by it… I’d love to get comments on it!

The Reason She Left and Other Storie is available in print here: http://www.tinyurl.com/trsl-cs and as online here: http://www.tinyurl.com/trsl-e

I’ll send a free link to any reviewers who want to take a look.

whoops, I left off an ‘s’ !

Thank you SO much for championing PrinceLess! It was tough getting this book into people’s hands at first, but thanks to the response we’ve been getting retailers are starting to take notice. For those who haven’t had a chance to read the book, the tradepaperback is available for pre-order now.

Thanks again!

Is the prince in Princeless named Les?

If you girls like Swierczynski then you should check out that Iron Fist run he mentioned. It’s really good. When I first read it, I was like, ‘If this guy gets the right book he’s gonna be huge”. It’s starts a little slow, but then you get two awesome one-shots: Orson Randall and The Death Queen of California and Iron Fist of the future. After that, the book goes bat-shit crazy, and turns into Hellraiser meets Mortal Kombat.

Oh, and Immortal Weapons, the mini-series that spins out of that is also pretty good.

Duane did a good job after Brubaker/ Fraction & David Aja left Iron Fist. So as Kelly said he has a solid history of taking over fan favorite or well received books. Glad that he is ableto tell his own story from a number one issue now and a cleaner slate.

@Kelly & Sue
I would echo what Daniel says above and recommend checking out The Immortal Iron Fist from the beginning by Brubaker/ Fraction and Aja till Duane’s stint. It was a fantastic book.

I feel you with the whole winter thing. I mean, today it barely got above 60 degrees and the sun was only out in the morning! Now it’s overcast and it might *gasp* rain tomorrow! It totally sucks. It might not hit 70 again until Wednesday or Thursday!

Go to Hell, Greg.

thanks for the Glory review!!! :D can’t wait to be on the show next time. FREAKING OUT

Note: I posted my note this morning because the link on the right side brings me to this post… is that working right?

Michael: I love you, too! I have to gloat now, because it will be 115 degrees soon enough and I’ll feel like I want to die. :)

Next episode will suck.

JK!!!!!!!!! It’ll be sweet.

Duane is a very good guy and an extremely talented writer. I’m glad he’s the guy who got the job.

Glory 23 was a huge missed opportunity. In the original Glory was a self-obsessed attention-seeker. She was 20 years ahead of her time and putting that character into the present surrounded by self-obsessed women-as-products would be an amazing comment on current society.
Glory had almost nothing in common with Wonder Woman, there was actually a lot of depth behind her that has apparently been ignored.
The art is a problem. Her body shape has gone from unrealistic to impossible. An unhealthy amount of steroids with a baby face. How is that better?
Her armor was mentioned, yet it is impractical as it still leaves most of her exposed. be practical or impractical, but choose something and stick with it.
The art (and writing) could have been done in a way to explain the difference between issues 22 and 23, you could have the new steroid body but keep her history intact, but they took the lazy way out. As a fan I am really disappointed, bring back Duffy and Deodato, or Moore and Benes.
