The Line It Is Drawn #74 – Comic Book Characters and NickToons Characters

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 9:00 AM Pacific, Friday, January 27th).

The topic is…

Celebrate Anniversary Issues That Will Likely Never Be! Choose a canceled series and our artists will come up with an Anniversary Issue cover for that book. Static Shock #500! Angel and the Ape #200! Only canceled comics that have never HAD an issue that ended in 00 qualify (so no Defenders, Sgt. Rock, etc.)!

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Team-up or mash-up comic book characters with characters from NickToons (here is a list of NickToons to help you out).

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Go make suggestions for next week!

I am officially 1000 years old now, because I only know one of these Nicktoons well, and a few only vaguely. Thank goodness Steve did up Ren and Stimpy. Very nice look, and I like the homage to that one Batman cover.

Not to say the others aren’t great looking pieces of art, that is.

Except Chaz’s. Ugh! Shudder! Fetus face Xavier, no! (Um, that is to say, Chaz’s art looks good, it’s just a creepy topic.) And he did miss the chance to, instead of “blood”, say “human bean juice”. I suppose that’d work better with a Rorschach/Nite Owl mash up, tho.

Suggestions are due by the 27th, I assume.

I find the lack of Danny Phantom disturbing.

What about comic book characters who are Nicktoons? I’m referring, of course, to the TMNT.

Also, I’m surprised there’s no Spongebob-Aquaman mashup here. Spongebob has got to be the most famous Nicktoon.

LOVE Ren & Stimpy as Batman & Robin!

Oh Man, I was afraid that I wasn’t going to like this week’s efforts too much (Never been a big fan of most of Nickelodeon’s cartoons- with a few exceptions) …and I was right. With bias openly admitted, here’s my comments:

#1- My Life As A Teenage Robot IS one of the few Nicktoons I liked. But did you have to team her up with THIS version of Machine Man!? There was a time he was Marvel’s coolest robot hero. Curse you Nextwave!! Artistically though Sean did a goo job with both characters.

#2- Avatar the last Airbender *IS* my favorite Nicktoon, in fact my favorite animated series ever, period! …But I don’t get this. First, Isn’t Bender a CARTOON character, not a comic book one? (yes I know there was a Futurama comic, but that’s a pretty flimsy excuse.) Also, was the whole thing just an excuse to make a (terrible) pun?? And the ATLA characters were so small I couldn’t almost make them out! What a waste of Mic’s otherwise excellent artwork. :(

#3- I hate Ren and Stimpy. ‘Nuff said.

#4- Now THIS is much more faithful to the source material(s)! In ideas AND art style! And hilarious to boot! :D

#5- Hate Invader Zim, and anyway the combination of styles doesn’t work. Sorry Nick.

#6- I just have one thing to say about Catdog; URRRGH!!!

…So yeah, I was disappointed. But at least Brendan’s piece ruled. Congratulations! :)

I’m a bit too old to have watched any of these but Ren and Stimpy, but the pieces work surprisingly well. Chaz really takes the cake this time, though.

Ohhhh man, that Catdog one.

Our readership must be younger than I thought. I have no idea what this Teenage Robot thing is.

Rocko’s Modern Life was the best Nicktoon.

I am horribly scarred by this week. I don’t know why Chaz wants to give me nightmares for the rest of my life.

And poor little Gir. *sob*

And yeah, I’m unfamiliar with any of these toons except Ren & Stimpy and Zim. But that’s gotta happen with some of these themes.

Chaz, you grossed me out. Great job!

Doom and Gir would have great. But Every artist did a great job

So both of the pieces that were based on my suggestions involve misanthropic alcoholic robots. Nicely done.

Sean is apparently psychic, because, for better or worse, I was thinking that Aaron would hit on Jenny.
Mic… love it. Yes, I know Bender is a toon, and has been in a comic. But… I thought the ‘Bender’ aspect was too funny to pass up suggesting
Steve… nailed it with Ren & Stimpy. Bravo
Brendan… again, nailed the style to a T
Nick is always bringing it home with his style
and Chaz… wow. Creeptastic. Beautiful.

Must admit that, after so many weeks of suggestions, I’m a bit tired of the ‘Why wasn’t this character used?’ comments. I for one suggested characters from Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Doug, Spongebob, Kung Fu Panda and each of the toons that were used. It’s up to the artists to pick the suggestions they feel they can capture the best.
And finally… Brian, next week is #75, and we’re doing ‘Cancelled Title Anniversaries’… The Line is going to make it too 100, right? Please tell me we’re not all doomed…

Got to agree with you there Big Mike the comments of why wasn’t this done why wasn’t that done is a bit unfair on the artists after all we can’t draw every suggestion, I always make my picks if an image pops into my head when reading the suggestions, it has nothing to how popular the character is.

and Sijo a comment on the actual art work would have been nice, so i say no, not ’nuff said ;)

Great work everybody

Wasn’t Brainiac 5 in the LoSH cartoon basically “My Life As A Teenaged Robot”? I mean the concept, not the show itself, which I never saw. Good times.

Steve, I absolutely agree on Sijo’s comment about your Ren and Stimpy piece. This should be about the art, not your biases. I didn’t like the show “Catdog,” but Chaz’s piece creeps me out in a good way.

Sijo, it’s good that you participate every week, but your comments tend to be overly critical for something that’s just meant for fun. At least that’s my opinion, and no, I’m not trying to start a flame war.

I wouldn’t say “overly critical”, Scot. I’d say “overly dismissive and self-obsessed.”

Sijo, no one gives a crap whether you like what the piece is based on, and when you base your entire opinion on solely that, it makes your opinion functionally worthless.

I agree with Scot and Michael P,
Sijo’s comments degrade an otherwise fun and lighthearted exercise.
If these guys are kind enough to churn these out for us week after week maybe you could be kind enough not to bash the work.

Keep it up artists. The catdog and ren and stimpy pieces are phenomenal. I look forward to this article every week.

This is one of the weeks that I have a passing knowledge of the one of the subjects. It doesn’t keep me from appreciating how good the artists are and how they tackled the concept.

Sweet, I knew all of these Nicktoons! Wait…is that a bad thing?

extra points if you can get the covers my Ren and Stimpy pic is a Homage too (dont cheat and look on my deviant art page) little clue’s in the rocks :)

Not a big Ren and Stimpy fan but I would say Steve has gotten their personalities on point here…

Both Sean and Brendan got the atmosphere and fun of the Teenage Robot series….and points for the lecharious Machine Man and young Kal in both…

I must say Nick, that style of M-11 is threatingly creepy…..

….but not like Chaz’s “XavErik”…*SHUDDER*

And although I had dreams of a Terra vs Toph or Aang vs Phoenix type matchup, Mic got me on my blind Matt Groniverse love and that is something Bender would TOTALLY say!

Good Job Guys!

I award the Ren & Stimpy piece this week’s prize, not because I was ever a big fan of those characters, but because the rendering is nice and it parodies a classic cover to boot.

Can’t believe I didn’t say this before, re: Chaz’s bit:

“Human bean juice. Hrm.”

As I’ve noted many times before here, I’m just not the kind of fan that posts “everything was just great!!” all the time; by itself that’s meaningless. I try to give actual criticism. AND when I’m biased in some way I always note it right out too, otherwise it would not be fair, but I’m a human being and cannot always help it. Most importantly, I’ve *always* appreciated the efforts put out by our artists regardless of my own personal opinion on the pieces and have said so many, MANY times. But THAT part nobody remembered, eh?

But hey, anybody who doesn’t like my posts, doesn’t need to read them, either. I know I won’t read theirs.

As for our contributors, I’m sorry I didn’t enjoy things so much this week, but I know there’ll be better ones in the future. Keep up the good work! :)

Sijo, you are more than welcome to your own opinion and I welcome constructive criticism on my work, after all its how we improve as artists, my problem with your comment was “#3- I hate Ren and Stimpy. ‘Nuff said.” there is no constructive criticism in that statement, if you don’t like the way its drawn, coloured or the subject portrayed then say so, but don’t just dismiss it (which is how it comes across) because you don’t like the characters in the picture

All of it was great, but my favorite was the NextWave Machine Man/XJ9 Mash-Up, for reminding me how I miss both.

Sijo, perhaps the problem might be shown in your choice of diction. What you said was “I know there’ll be better ones” when what you meant was “I’m sure there’ll be ones I like more.” Subtle but important difference. You may not like the subject matter for some of these, and I may not be familiar with them, but that in no way affects the skill of the artist or the quality of the piece.

@Sijo: You’re an asshat. Nobody needs you. Get lost.

Chaz knocked it out hands down. It was hilarious!

Only canceled comics that have never HAD an issue that ended in 00 qualify (so no Defenders, Sgt. Rock, etc.)!

Mild technical question: there are a few comics whose only issue ending in 00 is a 1 million issue. I assume you don’t want to disqualify Chase or Hitman from this week, right?

Quailman should have happened. How doug/porkchop didn’t make the cut I will never know.
Also someone mentioned Rocco’s Modern Life. I miss Heffer….MOOOOO!
Chaz your piece is now my screen saver on my phone. My mom saw it and said “dear god what is that?”
I consider that a job well done sir.

Thok, I would think that DC’s #1,000,000 issues don’t count, as they were just a gimmick and not legitimate anniversary issues.

Chaz Folgar’s piece made me laugh and freaked me out at the same time.

Wouldn’t Magneto’s arms not have to be working?
