3 Chicks Review Comics – Episode 035

Inside this episode! Maddy’s back for our review of Faith Erin Hicks’ Friends With Boys, and Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Fatale #2.  We then have an interview with indie comics darling and Glory artist Ross Campbell! Lastly, in a nice contrast to the Before Watchmen development we give Chick of the Week to a brand new “big two” character!

[…] A new 3 Chicks Review Comics is up on CSBG.  […]

Your Fatale review convinced me to try the book. I loved Bru and Philips together on Sleeper, but I haven’t followed them much since that series. I tried a couple of issues of Criminal, but I think I might dig Fatale more.

Annnnddddd the Ross interview… okay, first off, Ross sounds way different than what I’m used to. No grunts or UGGGHHHs or yelling. It was so professional!

And I really REALLY enjoyed the interview. Lots of great things said by everyone, and a very interesting discussion on all fronts. TWO THUMBS WAY UP!

You gals REALLY need to get this up on ITunes. :( I can’t find the podcast on the app. :(

“An in-story reason for a mohawk” sounds Scorseseish.

Oh, oh, and i just had a brilliant idea! Rob Liefeld should do fill-ins on all of these Extreme comics – just think about it, Prophet eats some mushrooms and slips into Liefeld-vision for six issues.

Great set of reviews! And I agree with you especially that Friends with Boys is awesome and so much better in the print form.

Really enjoyed hearing about the process from Ross despite the five solid minutes of “um’s”, “likes” and “y’knows” (just kidding). Seriously, an enjoyable listen.

I remember Alan Moore stating that was the reason he did Supreme in the first place was he could tell all the Superman stories he always wanted without having to work with DC and the same definitely holds true for Glory. I remember an Erik Larson interview where he talks about just doing knockoffs of his favorite characters in the way that he wants. It’s perfectly okay to be derived (derivative) from something popular and I feel it’s validated when you do something creative or inspired that the original isn’t. I think that’s kind of the point. There’s a Supreme issue where he meets the Spirit of Jack Kirby where he points out that Superman is derived from the Wiley Gladiator concept. Everything comes from somewhere, it’s what you do with it that determines whether it has merit or not.

Thanks Girls! Thanks Ross.

Hello everybody!
You guys made that comment about comments so I thought I would speak up this time. I listen in every now and then tho I don’t read much of what you review :/ I will say that I’ll be checking out Prince-less because of your last review or was it two cast ago? Anyways, I’m a fan of Ross and Im new fan of Faith Erin Hicks’ Friends With Boys which I’m reading online ( so I skipped the second half of the review) so this was a extra fun cast for me to listen too! So yeah it was fun listen and I’ll make sure to drop in every now and then :)

@Kelly: Looking forward to Talent Cast with Ross and Nick!

The internet + curiosity = a dangerous thing

So here is Starts 27 or so minutes in and the Wonder Woman comparison is about 30:20 in.

Here is the “review” in question. Not only does the guy bag on Kelly, but Ming Doyle as well. Geez, this guy is an A-class troll.

I’m wondering just what negative review of a book set him off, because he’s holding quite a grudge over that.

The perfect 3 Chicks ringtone for a call from someone you’d rather not get a call from: “Fuckety fuck fuck fuck”. :)

Hey guys, first time listening to the cast. I saw Ross was a guest so I tuned in but the whole cast was great, I’ll try and listen more in future :)

As far as the wonder woman/glory superman/supreme thing goes, I kinda hate when people say “oh, so its obvious that this is a stand in” because even though I’m a massive comic fan, I don’t read either of those books, I don’t look at Glory or Supreme and inform myself based on those mythos. And especially when you take that scene, and actually pay attention to the dialogue, and whats being said, thats really not how a conversation between Superman and WW would go. Like I said I don’t read those books but even I know that they are not like that. So its even more stupid people will read that and just decide its an analogue regardless.
