Comic Book Six Degrees: Omaha the Cat Dancer to Jean-Luc Picard
I name two comic book characters. You then have to connect the two using only shared appearances in comic books (official appearances in comics only – no cameos like Terry Austin sneaking Popeye into the background of a panel and no outside comic book appearances, like cartoons and the like). You have to do so using less than six comics total. Covers and pin-ups do not count – only actual appearances in the same comic book story (so it doesn’t count if they each appeared in separate stories inside the same anthology).
Every week, whoever connects the two characters in the least amount of turns gets to pick the next week’s match- (in the event of a tie, the winner is chosen randomly). Last week was Mystery Men to Mystery Men. Michael Grabois was one of two folks who connected the two in five turns.
Michael went with:
The Mystery Men met the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Flaming Carrot #25
The Turtles met Gen13 in Gen13 #13B
Gen13 met Spider-Man in their mini-series
Spider-Man met Baron Zemo in Untold Tales of Spider-Man #13
Baron Zemo met Marvel’s Mystery Men in Mystery Men #5
Michael’s challenge is…
Omaha the Cat Dancer to Captain Jean-Luc Picard

E-mail me your answers at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Do NOT post your answers in the comments section!
Remember, whoever connects the two characters in the least amount of comics gets to pick the connection for next time around (I’ll pick a random winner in the event of a tie)!
Remember, only authorized appearances in comic books count (for instance, Wolverine in Gen13 #13 does not count)!

Last week’s contest is what needs to be updated, Burgas. I know cuz it was mine! I can’t remember my solution, now, though. I’ll find it later.
Damn, Omaha to Picard? That am hard! Probably. I’ll look in a little while and then find something pretty easy, probably.

Spider-Man/Gen13 was a one-shot, not a miniseries.

Ah, you’re certainly not the first to do it, Tobey, don’t worry too much.
Now we just all have to beat 5 links.

This is going to be interesting. Who did Omaha ever crossover with?
To the Internet!

Someone got Omaha to Picard in five? Good job, it took me seven when I submitted it to Brian.
I’m curious as to what the other 5-link Mystery Men chain was.

Well, even though I was the one suggesting the Mystery Men to Mystery Men, it appears my own answer wouldn’t have counted!
I went from Burden’s in the TMNT/Flaming Carrot xover, TMNT in Gen 13 13B with Wonder Woman (which I suggested might not be a kosher solution), WW in JLA/Avengers 3 with Baron Zemo, and him in Mystery Men 5 (which appeared to be the only link from the rest of the Marvel U to that series). I also suggested that if the Zemo in Mystery Men wasn’t the same in JLA/A, you’d need the Capt. America/Citizen V ’98 issue to link the 2.
I also came up with a non-kosher link that cut out some more — Burden’s MM in the TMNT/FC book, Flaming Carrot in Cerebus 104, (here’s the taboo link) Cerebus is mentioned in Marvel’s 1985 #1 (by the annoying guy in the comic shop), and there might even be a Cerebus image in the shop somewhere (it’s been a while since I’ve read it). Zemo’s in that book, and then the MM5 link.
Tobey’s link was pretty good. I’ve forgotten it already, but the general gist of it was very good for being done that quickly. Now to beat 5!

Several of these contests have made me wonder that two suggested characters should have a book together. Omaha-Picard crossover, how great would that be?

I didn’t see Tobey’s solution, but I’ve found a five-step link. I’ll probably end up going with that, as I’m not seeing any way to cut it down.

I can do this in one move, but I need the ability to clear the Holodeck’s browser history.

For last week, I don’t understand how Wolverine in Gen¹³ #ABC / Gen¹³ #13C doesn’t count or is unauthorised, but the Ninja Turtles do count and are authorised for Gen¹³ #ABC / Gen¹³ #13B. The indicia of the issue states “Wolverine is ™, ® and © Marvel Characters 1996″ – surely that means it’s authorised and not just some parody cameo.
My degrees of separation were:
- The Mystery Men were in Flaming Carrot #25 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were in Gen¹³ #ABC with Wolverine.
- Wolverine was in Wolverine: Origins #20 Baron Heinrich Zemo.
- Baron Heinrich Zemo was in Mystery Men #5 with Mystery Men.
Which was four degrees.
(Or, if the combined version of Gen¹³ #ABC didn’t count, then the second degree would have to be split into:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were in Gen¹³ #13B with Gen¹³.
- Gen¹³ were in Gen¹³ #13C with Wolverine.
= Five degrees.)

Thank goodness the Ninja Turtles are such crossover sluts, or none of these challenges would get very far.

The use of the copyright symbol in the indicia doesn’t mean the use of the character was authorized. It just means Image was covering their asses.

Pin-ups don’t count.
