3 Chicks Review Comics – Episode 036

Inside this episode! We review Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan’s Conan The Barbarian #1 and Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, and James Harren’s B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth: The Long Death #1 - both by Dark Horse!  We then talk to writer and artist of the new graphic novel Friends With Boys, the lovely Faith Erin Hicks, who owes her career to the internet…or so she says! Lastly, Sue gives Chick Of The Week to one of the longest running DC supeheroines around! We also spend a good amount of time talking about my recent She Has No Head! column which seemed to break the internet. Good times!

Apologies in advance for the audio quality in this episode. My headset broke literally while we were recording and as a result the audio quality is not up to snuff. Hope it’s tolerable.

[…] A new 3 Chicks Review Comics is up! […]

great episode!! the audio sounded fine technically, but this one had the same problem as the previous episode by being too low-volume. cars driving by outside were enough to drown out the audio unless i was sitting right next to my computer, even with volume on full blast. :( i should listen to them at night when things quiet down.

anyway, regardless of that this one was fun! Faith coming on was awesome, and not just because of the me shout-outs and the Marrow and Turtles talk! ;) here’s Faith’s Marrow pic if you haven’t found it yet: http://relaunched-blog.blogspot.com/2011/10/marrow-1-by-faith-erin-hicks.html

me again!!! i just re-listened to the last 20 minutes of the episode because i missed a lot of it. great job again on the Not Equal post, it was awesome, you’re a powerhouse! 423 comments now!! unless i missed it you and Sue forgot the arguments “superhero comics are for men” and “you’re a prude” and “why don’t you quit whining and make your own comics.” i think it’s telling that the people who argue against not just your post but stuff like David’s post and other sexism and racism awareness-raising/criticism stuff are, generally, way less composed and calm than the proponents; they come in and they’re all angry and defensive and insulting, hardly any of them are like “you’re wrong, here are my points” they’re all ranting and hateful.

I’m not sure if doing a Conan comic is “thinking outside the box” as Kelly puts it. The legendary Marvel Conan series by Thomas and Windsor Smith was one of the most famous and critically acclaimed comics of the bronze age this side of Adams/O’Neil Batman. It’s popularity inspired the Conan movie. Of course this was all before most fans today were born. But I’m old and I know these things. That said, I agree with your review. It’s nice to see this character return and done well. It’s not as good as the Thomas/Smith run, but it is entertaining. And one thing that does seem to be outside the box these days is a well written and drawn comic book.

Also, I wanted to ask, have either of you (Kelly/Sue) read the new Planet of the Apes series? The book has two strong women as the lead characters that the book is built around. You don’t have to have any working knowledge of the series or film mythos going in (although having it makes the book even better). Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the comments. I figured you’d love the Marrow/TMNT talk! Sorry about the volume on the episode, I did have to adjust it in order to keep my voice from being too loud. My new headset has already arrived though…so NEVER AGAIN (hopefully).

Thanks for the Faith Marrow link…I totally forgot to add it!

YES! We totally forgot those complaints for BINGO. Thank you. :) And I absolutely agree with you on the defensiveness thing…it says a lot about the argument (and the people arguing) I think.

@Michael: Well, I didn’t mean to say doing a Conan comic is “thinking outside the box”, I meant to say that Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan on a Conan comic is a bit “outside the box”…because they do not seem like the typical and expected creators for such a book…but if I misspoke, forgive me.

I have not read the Planet of the Apes series. It’s funny because I don’t have much interest in it, despite loving the original movies…but maybe I’ll check it out. Thanks for the recommend.
