Cover Theme Game for 3/21

Every week you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” “They’ve all been cloned (who HASN’T been cloned?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers. The connections will ONLY have to do with comic books (so no “they share the same last names of Vice Presidents,” etc.).

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything! Same thing with corner boxes!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!

Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.

Good luck and enjoy!

I’ve got a vague notion, but I don’t think what I’m thinking would have happened in the Superboy issue. Probably.

And hey, last week/week before’s answer could have included my exes! Ahoy hoy!

I presume the obvious connection is too obvious?

Most likely. ;)

I strongly suspect there’s a reason we didn’t get We3 #1′s cover, given what I know about the other two.

I’m a bit disappointed that my alternate guess for the 3/7 game was wrong. Has that plot element really become so ubiquitous these days?

Brian, how long have you waited to use a We3 cover for this? lol
And It’s rare that I see something cute yet ominous (it’s those eyes….)

Good old Dev-Em, one of my favorite characters back then. Not everybody can inspire Superboy to say, “Well, I’ll be a three-eyed Kryptonian Babootch!”

Hahaha, yeah, it’s funny to see that Superboy cover, because while I’m dimly familiar with this story, I primarily know Dev-Em from his occasional appearances in the Levitz/Giffen Legion.

Come to think of it, this is an unusual week in that I’ve actually read all of these stories. (Unfortunately, in the first case.)

I’m a bit disappointed that my alternate guess for the 3/7 game was wrong. Has that plot element really become so ubiquitous these days?

As noted, you weren’t wrong, as you were correct, as said plot element did, indeed, apply. As for the ubiquity of it all, well, DC did do an entire crossover where they used that plot element for every superhero in the DC Universe, ya know? And it seems to have happened to most members of the X-Men at one point or another.

As for this week, do make a note of which We3 cover is being used.

If two covers feature barbers and the third cover features a friend of a barber, the theme can’t be “they all feature barbers.” I’d have the third cover also feature a barber if that were the theme. That said, if two covers feature a barber and the third cover features a friend of a barber, the odds are good that the theme does somehow involve barbers.

There is your fairly significant hint of the day! :)

I wasn’t trying to complain about the quiz; I just really thought I was onto something and…well, wasn’t. But yeah, I guess the theme I guessed is way, way more popular than I’d remembered. I blame the Muppets.

Oh, I know it wasn’t a complaint. I was just trying to stress that you shouldn’t feel disappointed, as it wasn’t like you were outright wrong or anything.

Well, this is all just a little too damned pleasant and reasonable for my tastes!

So, barbers…Charlie Brown’s dad?

What?

I think that’s what you mean, because otherwise your clue is just “wah-wah-wah-wah-WAH-wah-wah”.

Dammit, my vague notion was basically right! I was thinking more of a horrible mauling, but crap! Shoulda just sent it in anyway.

But damn, that WE3 cover gets me every time. Those covers are so great because they make explicit a plot point (that the WE3 animals were stolen/lost pets) while featuring the main characters nicely. This one in particular gets me because of Claire’s writing.

Of course, I’m bawling like a baby by the end of the book every time I read it anyway. “Is armor not we.”
