The Line it is Drawn #83 – Comic Book What If…?’s!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific, Friday, March 30th).

The topic is…

As per a suggestion by our own, John Trumbull, the theme for next week is….Dream casting! Pick a famous actor that you’d like to see portray a comic book character and our artists will draw said actor/actress as that character. What would a Clark Gable Superman look like? Or a Michael Caine John Constantine? Stuff like that.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

The theme is “What if…?” You come up with the description for an issue of What If…? (whatever company you’d like) and our artists will come up with what they think the end result of that What If…? would be.

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Ever since I discovered this site, I’m always excited to see what kind of the ideas you guys will come up with regards to the choice of topics.

A really good mix of the bizarre, interesting, awesome and laugh-out-loud funny for this week:

Bizarre-Sevy’s Aunt May as Venom, Perks’ Lana Lang goes bald
Interesting- Roger’s Kal-el raised by Amazons, Xum’s Flash, Gowdy’s Western Cap & Bucky (he’s now a horse?), McFarland’s Bruce as a Lost Boy in Neverland.
Awesome-Perks’ Paranormal Defense League of America (paging DC & Dark Horse!!!)
Funny-Walko’s X-Girls, D’ Alfonso’s aged Superman & Batman
Combined Awesomeness and Funny- Medellin’s Conan meets He-Man, Cox’s Batmobile-Spider-Mobile race, Trumbull’s FF goes Partridge Family (C’mon get happy, ‘Nuff Said)

Wow. This is a stellar week. Well done, everyone.

I love Old Batman’s utility belt.

The PDLA was awesome.

Also: The Flash one really made me laugh.

OK, it’s Thursday morning, which means I get my favorite column — TLiiD — with my breakfast — yay!

Aunt May as Venom — cute, but missing some dialogue to really nail the joke. Small complaint.

Thea does great art on the one that’s already obsolete — they’d sell him to Hephaestus for a really cool corkscrew, right? This is the new 52!

Clever take on Cap and Bucky — nice touches on the art — I can see it now, everyone thinks Bucky died in a skirmish, he was instead found by the Lakota and brought back to health, returns to bedevil the cavalry as the Ghost-with-no-Rider! (Given cease and desist by Disney attorneys) OK, we’ll call him something else…

Nick Perks and Axel Medellin put in all the details that make these so much fun — even a pink shirt reference!

Walko hasn’t loaded yet — OK we’ll get to him later…

Bruce as Peter Pan — one of the better touches of “The Man Who Has Everything” is that Clark creates an entire new world under the Black Mercy — wife, family, career, Bruce? Never gets out of the alley — he really is the Boy Who Never Grew Up, and Sean plays with that in a great way here.

I want the JLA/Hellboy mash-up to really happen! What a fantastic idea! I hope Nick can draw it!

World’s Finest: AARP — a cross-over with Peej and Helena would consist entirely of the women waiting for these two to get out of the bathroom — maybe Bendis could write it,,,,

Not to go all Sijo, but the Spider-Mobile never appealed to me — and all i can really say about the “Fab”tastic Four is that the faux Kirby style was well done — OK, I’d love to see the Torch “burning” up the keyboards..is that U2 on the building bottom left?

Yum really enjoys the Silver Age covers I see — W.W.O.D.O.K. last week, and now a Broome Flash! Also excellently conveyed!

OK, Now to go find Walko…OK, the X-parody this week is to mix them with the Facts of Life – -clever, funny, most of the details matching the original X-cover — including Blair/Jean standing there doing absolutely NOTHING connected to any of the others… and then I see Edna Garrett… dressed as… Emma… Frost… oh my god.. I’m gonna be… URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Anyone know how to get projectile vomit out of a keyboard? Seriously dude, Mitt Romney isn’t the only one needing a mental Etch-a-Sketch right now!!!!!

Goddamn these drawings are terrific!!!!

I like High Roller the most. I wanna read a High Roller comic! :)

is that U2 on the building bottom left?

Since I preserved the original Kirby art from FF #3 in the background of my piece, that would be a no. :)

Aunt May/Venom is very cool. I like that she’s still making wheatcakes, although I suppose they’re EVIL wheatcakes now.

I wasn’t expecting Thea to go in that direction for the Superman/Amazon idea. Nice job and nice, understated way to make your point.

Josh, I like how much thought you put into how Cap’s shield would work in the Old West. Nice detail.

Nick, I have to ask… How did Lex Luthor lose his hair in THIS reality? :)

Axel’s He-Man/Conan piece is really funny and made me laugh out loud. Very nicely drawn & colored.

Edna Garrett dressed as the White Queen… you’re a sick man, Walko. I love it! Very clever.

Sean, really liking the colors on the Bruce Wayne Peter Pan piece. And wouldn’t Robin make a great Lost Boy?

Nick, “Spaceboy” is really the perfect, Mignola-esque name to give Kal-El. I like it.

I love the utility belt that Marco gave old Batman.

Daniel’s Batmobile/Spider-Mobile race cover reminds me of those fun photo covers Marvel did back in the 80s.

Yukinori came up with a classic Silver Age twist for his Flash cover. I can TOTALLY see DC publishing that cover in the 60’s.

If you’d told me the Flash of Planet Z was a real story, I would have believed you. Very cool.

This was a great idea executed fantastically by everyone.

The Batmobile/spider-mobile cover reminded me more of a Key Comic cover, but it still looked to be period ’60s.
Axel’s was totally Conan. Kill the villain and get the girl.

Thanks for making my morning.

Just noticed we’re going with my suggestion for next week. Fun!

@John – I was hoping someone would ask. The answer: he lost his hair naturally through male pattern baldness. The irony!
@BeccaBlast – Wow, I hope so too.

That Flash mock is amazing. Great vintage process, but also amazing anatomy.
And, as always, Walko rocks.

Mrs. Garrett in Emma Frost’s gear!!!
What has been seen cannot be unseen!!!
o_O

Hot damn, the quality increases exponentially every week.

They are all awesome, but I want Venom Aunt May to be serving braincakes. :)

This is a great group. I love every one of them. Trumbell’s FF is probably my favorite – it captures Kirby so well.

Just amazing John Trumbull. Amazing.

Possibly the best line is drawn every. Great job everyone

Dang, Marvel needs to do Cowboy Cap post haste, that’s a brilliant idea!

Love those 70’s & 80’s themes! Partridge Family, The Facts of Life, very cool stuff, Bill & John! All of you did an awesome job this week, but those two are my fav’s!

A little disappointing this week. The only one I didn’t groan at was the Superman/Batman as antiquarians.

Excellent work, everyone!

I would so read the Superman Hellboy book, can we make that happen? Please? Can someone please write and draw this?

It took me a few minutes to realize that NO ONE IS DRIVING the Batmobile and Spider-Mobile in Daniel’s piece. Very clever way to take the What If literally, sir!

What if xaviers school was all girls? For about a week a month it would be the most dangerous place on earth.

Brilliant Fantastic Four and Flash parodies. Really amazing work there, folks.

PMS jokes. Lovely.

Great work by everyone this week. I love the Lana Lang and X-Girls drawings.

THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes.

The only thing the X-Girls is missing is a Diff’rent Stro-X backup story advert in the corner.

The PDLA is incredible!
Elseworlds please!

I enjoyed watching these Comic Book What Ifs. Good Fun!

Ha! Great stuff this week, guys. That geriatric Batman and Superman is amazing (was my first choice but I was too slow).

I was going to add a caption to my Aunt May (as most have said they wished it had), but I figured everyone could add their own caption and it’d be funnier than mine.

Nice little easter egg from Marco with the “Punk Kids” sharing an uncanny resemblance to David Tennant and Matt Smith just above a villain known as “The Doctor.”

Great pieces all around, never disappointed by what comes out.

great work by everyone this week its a shame I didn’t have time to get mine finished :( hopefully I will next week

This is the best week I have ever seen! Great job, EVERYBODY, for bringing the A-game.

The Superman being raised by prof brunholm is my favorite love it! you are a Genius!!! Call Mignola and get a deal done to bring that to life!

@Eric/Mychal/Sabre/fred – if I could *make* Spaceboy happen I would! But it would have to be written by Mignola or why bother? my dream job…

Man you guys just rock too damn hard sometimes! Great works all around, and some of the funniest entries yet!

But man, Nick you took my Supes/Hellboy suggestion and realized the heck out of it. Spaceboy would be my favorite book. Lets get Mikey and Danny D on the phone and see what you guys can come up with. It’s just sooo good! Fills me with the nerdiest joy possible!

@ Maclay:

i do believe that you are correct. Nice catch that!

Also, these are amoung the best pieces that i have seen. i love the Mobiles racing each other with Bats & Robs in the background & the Flash cover. However, all of them are great. Thanks all!

(Please note that since I’m reading this a little late today, I’m going to post my comments *before* reading the other posters’, as I want to give my unbiased opinion.)

What If… Aunt May had been possessed by the Venom symbiote?: Bwa ha ha!! Makes no sense at all but who cares, it’s funny! (yet creepy!)

What if Kal-El’s rocket had landed on Paradise Island?: Is that it? The Amazons just raise him? We don’t get to see the result? What’s the point?

What if Captain America had lived in the Old West?: Nice art, and I like Bucky as a horse, but what’s with the Native American touches?

What If Superboy had cost Lana Lang her hair instead of Lex Luthor?: HAA HA HA!! So funny, and SO well done according to the original comics, even using her old superwoman costume too! My favorite so far!!

What If He-Man met Conan the Barbarian?: This, on the other hand… better drawn than the above one, maybe, but the machismo ruins it for me. As a character, Conan is *nothing* next to He-Man- not stronger, not smarter, not a better hero. Period.

What if Xavier’s started as an all-girls school? Ha ha haa! Oh man! Walko is quickly becoming my favorite new TLIID contributor, his pieces are always so funny yet so well-based on the originals!

What if Bruce Wayne became one of the Lost Boys in Neverland? He… becomes a bat-eared Peter Pan? I don’t get this one either.

What if superman was raised by prof brunholm (hellboy): Oh my God, Perks at his best: doing an almost perfect homage to the original style while adding his own clever twists. Thank you, Nick!!

What if Superman and Batman aged accordingly from their first appearance?: Ahem. That ALREADY happened, you know- the original Superman and Batman were allowed to age in Earth-2, nobody else remembers them? Still this was very funny, especially the Internet joke. :D

What if the Batmobile and the Spider-Mobile had a race?: Ah, the Spider-Mobile! It may have been an in-joke, but I still found it plenty cool. And hey, if even Superman got a car once…

What if the Fantastic Four formed a family band instead?: Speaking of very well done homages, this feels like Lee and Kirby could have done it themselves. Very nice!

What if the Flash wasn’t the fastest man on Earth? And yet another cover that feels just like it could have come out in the Silver Age! Though I think it (intentionally) twists around the meaning of the original suggestion, but hey, it works! ;)

Artistically, I have to give it to Perks this week, but I’m still chuckling over Walko’s, so I like that one best. Thanks for your work gentlemen! :)

^You’re right in that I was going for the meaning someone(s) faster than Flash on Earth, but Yukinori went with a different Silver Age twist.

“Not to go all Sijo”

You wish. :D

Mrs Garret as the White Queen made diet coke come out of my nose :)

hellboy good…everything else CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

Wow, we get so spoiled by awesomeness with this feature every week. It’s like Christmas, but without the itchy sweater you don’t really want.

Everything is quite good, can’t even highlight a favorite.

But with the X-Girls (and I didn’t even notice the Facts of Life ref at first, so maybe it’s something with that I’m missing), would the headmaster at BATES Academy be called Master? *giggling like the 12 year old I am on the inside*

Oh and Sijo, ‘What if Aunt May became Venom’ makes total sense. After Spidey abandons the symbiote in the church tower, Aunt May ends up there doing volunteer work for the community center. One late night, the symbiote, sensing the presence of the elder Parker decides to take its revenge in a whole new direction.

Also to Sijo: The reason for the Native American touches in the Wild-West Cap image is that he is “Captain America”. At that time, when there was still a very real war going on between the Native Americans and the children of European immigrants trying to take their land, of course America would be represented by a combination of the two groups that were inhabiting it. Hence, the fact that he looks like a cross between a Native American warrior and a US soldier.

(No political slant or political-correctness implied here, just explaining the artist’s reasoning as I see it. Josh, am I in the ballpark?)

That Flash one took me a minute.
