The Line it is Drawn #85 – Avengers vs. X-Men (With a Twist)!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific, Friday, April 13th).

The topic is…

Comic book characters mashed up with classic paintings!

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of Avengers vs. X-Men, this week’s topic is just that, Avengers vs. X-Men…at anything BUT just outright brawling. Pick an Avenger then pick an X-Men and then pick something for them to compete it (chess, checkers, skiing, staring contest, arm wrestling, etc.)

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Good stuff. All were excellent and made me laugh.

The big question is… will the real Avengers vs. X-Men be anywhere near as entertaining as this is. ;-) :-D

wonderful, though Nick Perks had me laughing out loud

Mic? totally killed it this week. AWESOME GIF!!!!

Man, we brought it with the funny word balloons this week. :)

Ha! So much goodness here. I’m so glad I didn’t pick a cheesecake entry this week – there is NO WAY I could have competed with Axel, Marco, and Mic. Great stuff everyone!

Giggity…. who else but Quagmiron?

Yippee! Thanks for taking two of my suggestions, and done by two of my most favorite artists on here!

Great work all around, as always.

An excellent showing for misogyny. A thin showing for humor.

JC, I want to hit you so badly. *Facepalm*

Nah, JC’s right. Couple of really classless entries this week, and none of ‘em made me laugh. Good drawings though.

These were all wonderful…and probably FAR more entertaining than the actual comics…but I have to say that the one with the Beast and Tigra chasing the red laser made me just giggle uncontrollably.

Look at that booty jiggle!

Love the look on Beast’s face as he chases the dot. Exactly what my cat looks like too.

Only three of them really highlighted half naked ladies.

Great stuff, as always. But…pretty sure Cap is a Dem. FDR and all that. And Beast DEFINITELY is.

The word “misogyny” gets thrown around a lot in geek circles–especially in comics–so I just want to remind people what the actual definition is:

“Misogyny: hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women”

If anyone can say, literally, they believe any of the above pieces to be misogynistic, they you may have some issues. And every time something like a comic book female being places in a slightly sexual or enticing pose is called “misogynistic” it takes away from the seriousness of the situation when real women truly are treated in horrifying ways.

Lighten up. These drawings probably indicate the exact opposite of misogyny. I know I’ve never wanted to draw playful, sexy pictures of someone I hated.

I feel that the animated one needs more website plugs.
I don’t know any of the artists backgrounds, but I don’t get a sense that they hate women. But it’s the internet, so let’s just throw labels around and see if any of them stick. It helps to cover up our own feelings.

It’s not really the half-naked ladies that are the problem, it’s the icky, smarmy looking creeps who are egging them on. Anyway, screw it, who cares.

@Dan

FACT: Tony Stark is by canon a smarmy looking creep whose three weaknesses are his ego, women and Johnny Walker.

gah who do i tweet to?

Some classic moments this week —

“Contest?” Spider-dickery is an under-appreciated meme in the comics — but Nick nailed it absolutely

the expression on Tony’s face as Rulk (Santorum? Gingrich?) stomps him into the ground — i can see Angel as Huntsman and Emma as Bachmann — but Cap is too smart to be part of this bunch…..

I LOVE the Feud — Beast is the perfect host — and you even got Hulk’s hair right — but does it make me too much of a fangirl to say the Avengers logo is too modern? and that Cap shouldn’t be there yet? Sorry :blushing:

@Cuda That’s not the point though. Both that pic and the volleyball one have a smarmy, reductive “hurr hurr, women”, Wizard Magazine ick-stink about them. That’s what makes them misogynistic, not that they’re depicting half-naked ladies.

Even the Phoenix Force couldn’t survive the Blue Shell :)

Wolverine’s just whistling “Dixie” in that Family Feud send-up. :D

Becca,

I’m a little muddled on who I thought would be analgous to whom in the GOP lineup. I think Gingrich was Iron Man (smarmy womanizing smart guy). I suggested Cap running as the straight man to the more colorful characters in the line-up, which probably isn’t Ron Paul, but may be a libertarian leaning candidate. Thea picked up on that perfectly. In the Marvel universe, I see Cap as being more independent than aligning with either party, so it was a stretch to put him in the group, but I don’t think it was too big a stretch. Really love how it turned out.

As far as the Feud, I suggested “Classic” avengers, not original. I couldn’t remember how many people play, so I figured the artist would pick who they like. Great work punching it up John!

No Battle of the Bands? That was the first thing I thought of! Curse me an my anti-social-networking ways.

Oh everybody did a great job. Nick’s is hilarious.

great job by all my The Line it is Drawn alumni, and people need to remember this is all just a bit of fun or how long is it until someone complains that’s ive essentially drawn two half naked men holding hands :)

Oh, looks like a fun theme this week, good cuz I can use a laugh today:

Gambit vs. Daredevil in billiards: Is Daredevil in The Avengers? I know Wolverine and Spidey are now but… anyway, I don’t see DD losing this, the best Gambit can do is blow up the table and run away. The art style and coloring were not much to my liking, though.

X-women vs. avengers women in beach volleyball: oh I bet this one will get a lot of accusations of sexism. But since this is a joke poster and not an actual comic I don’t mind. Beast comment makes it even funnier.

Iron Man v Forge playing Rockem Sockem Robots: LOL this is probably the most original idea, and very well drawn. My money is on Stark.

One word – Twister : Uh oh, another sexist one. Not that I mind, but having more than one in the same week will probably rub some people wrong.

Firestar and Sunfire having a snowball fight: …Uh, counter intuitive much? But it looks cute.

Emma Frost, Warren Worthington, Captain America, Iron Man, Beast and Red Hulk running for the GOP nomination: I think this one breaks the “no fighting” theme, but it was VERY well drawn!

Classic avengers lineup v All New All different X-men on family feud!: My favorite one this week, I love Family Feud (but couldn’t the joke have been about something other than death? Oh well.)

Colossus vs Hulk – thumbwrestling: Sorry but even a blind Hulk cannot lose in strength to Colossus. However, very impressive art.

Beast and Tigra chase a red laser pointer dot: The joke here is too dumb for me (and it lasted too long, one panel was enough.)

Go karts- anyone in gokarts, but especially Rulk: Now this is funny!

Dazzler vs Scarlet Witch Dance Competition: Oh no, Mic has started doing animated art like Perks!! However it is cute. There’s no way Wanda can outdance Dazzler though (she was a stage performer.)

Scarlet Witch and Domino drawing straws: Heh, another neat idea. But I bet Domino wins, because her power is more subtle, Wanda needs to cast a hex and would be spotted and accused of cheating.

Overall, a very funny week like I expected. I hope not too much of a ruckus is raised over the sexist ones (next time, throw in a few guys in silly sexy poses too to balance things out folks! ;) )

Man, with all the whining, you all be better be happy no one took my swimsuit competition suggestion…

Aww, just one piece from Nick P this week

OK, I’m gonna say this now, because Kelly T. hasn’t shown up yet… and it’s clear a lot of you haven’t read her columns on this subject…

Showing She-Hulk, Rogue or Wasp in a bikini is not in and of itself sexist. If you read Kelly’s critique on that subject, it’s as much a matter of what is available to dress the characters in and how you pose them as anything else. Wearing a swimsuit to play beach volleyball is logical — does anyone think the Olympic coverage was sexist because we say Misty May-Trainor in a bikini all the time? The suits Alex put his players in were not at all unusual for the activity. And I defy any of you to show me how he posed them unnaturally, or in the “brokeback” pose that is far too prevalent . (Heck, not using Psylocke alone is evidence that he was trying to avoid sexist allusions.)

The Twister pic is almost chaste considering the spots the artist could have put them in — but given that Tony is a womanizing jerk, and ALL the players are female, not specified in the request — I do have some reservations. Once again — the poses could have been worse — especially if he had the Widow put a hand on red, like all the other contestants. He could have also added Namor, who apparently is now as big a jerk as Tony in that department.

This one hurts — Mic?, I love your stuff as a rule — but between the posing and the animation choices — I gotta say I agree with the complainers. You’ve done enough in other submissions and other styles that this looks more like an aberration than anything else — or maybe an experiment that went badly wrong. I’m sorry — I’m just gonna chalk this up to a misfire.

I can’t complain about the costuming choices — Marvel made those, after all — and outside of the dance contest, the posing isn’t atrocious — these are sexy and attractive women after all. This isn’t certainly worth the outrage it’s sparked — go back and look at Mic?’s portfolio in TLiiD and tell me he’s a sexist artist.

One bad picture does not a controversy make.

“All the whining”, Astrozac? Two people complained, everyone else has given this a resounding thumbs-up. Also, and I’m going to have to hit this button again, it’s not the half-naked ladies that are the problem, it’s the leering. It’s ugly.

But no one is saying you can’t have your fun. I’m just saying *I* don’t like it.

As long as males dominate the readership of comic books, there will always be a lot of pretty girls to be looked at. The trick is to keep it at a level of genuine appreciation. In truth, I think only the dance-off cartoon may cross the line. The other ‘offensive’ ones actually show the men to be acting badly while the women play along. It’s the guys who make the pictures cheesy. OTOH, they also make it funny. In the end, they’re all just drawings… no humans were harmed in the filming of these cartoons.

@Neil I don’t have a problem with pretty girls, pretty guys, nakedness, revealing costumes or hardcore fucking and sucking in my comics. What I *hate* is reductive, demeaning, fratboy crap. Oh yeah, and the particular brand of intellectual dishonesty dispensed by fanboys who want to play it all off as “just a laugh”.

But what I hate above all those things is Family Guy references. They are the *worst*.

What I like about the Family Feud one is that neither one of those contestants made it through the second mission.

PS. The Family Feud one is great.

What I like about the Family Feud one is that neither one of those contestants made it through the second mission.

Well, yeah. That was the basic joke. :)

One of my friends on Facebook asked me if there were three OTHER folks who somehow left a team after the second adventure (Since I wrote “top five answers” & all that). I couldn’t think of anyone besides Sunfire leaving the X-Men in issue #94. Can anyone else think of any?

I LOVE the Feud — Beast is the perfect host — and you even got Hulk’s hair right — but does it make me too much of a fangirl to say the Avengers logo is too modern? and that Cap shouldn’t be there yet? Sorry :blushing:

Becca, I was going with a classic Avengers lineup, roughly analagous to the mid-70s X-Men era lineup we see here. Altthough putting the Wasp in her old outfit probably muddled that concept a bit. Sue me, it was easier to draw.

PS. The Family Feud one is great.

I’ll try to do something creepier & more misogynistic for you next week, Dan. ;)

Can anyone else think of any?

Magneto in Exiles maybe? You’d think one iteration of Legion or another would provide an answer.

Oh, yeah. I think the Zero Hour reboot version of the Legion killed off Quantum Kid pretty quickly.

Well, yeah. Also leaving the team in X-Men #94 were Jean Grey, Angel, Iceman, Havok and Polaris. Only less permanently, and it wasn’t their second adventure by any means.

As for your actual question. Hmm, maybe Captain Marvel (Billy Batson)? No, I think that was the third mission of the JLI. Plastique? It was her second mission with the Suicide Squad. That would be a good group for this kind of thing, really. The Silver Surfer didn’t even make it to the second mission of the Defenders.

Also, I know it was the joke! I am appreciating the joke! And mostly just pointing out that it’s not necessarily about death.

Dan:

“There’s that word again… I don’t think it means what you think it means…”

My apologies for seeming to complain, John; in my own clumsy fashion I was making a joke on wonky fanboys and girls. And picking one outfit for the Wasp is NEVER easy — Jan could certainly never do it….

Also, I know it was the joke! I am appreciating the joke! And mostly just pointing out that it’s not necessarily about death.

Not trying to come down on you, Buttler. It’s all good. :)

Yeah, I had to phrase that question carefully to cover both the Hulk and Thunderbird.

My apologies for seeming to complain, John; in my own clumsy fashion I was making a joke on wonky fanboys and girls. And picking one outfit for the Wasp is NEVER easy — Jan could certainly never do it….

Oh, believe me, I can get anal with the continuity stuff, too (Well, the continuity I LIKE, anyway). I didn’t take it as a complaint at all, just explaining my thought process.

@basara I’m impervious to even the sneakiest, Princess Bride-based attack. Also, I’m not using any of those words wrong, cheers.

@John, that would be the BEST.

“Classic avengers lineup v All New All different X-men on family feud!: My favorite one this week, I love Family Feud (but couldn’t the joke have been about something other than death? Oh well.)”

“Colossus vs Hulk – thumbwrestling: Sorry but even a blind Hulk cannot lose in strength to Colossus. However, very impressive art.”

Humor columns are wasted on the humorless.

Great work all around to the artists. Funny stuff + some fantastic artwork.

Beast and Tigra is fantastic and had me rolling!

Too bad Thea didn’t draw any cheesecake this week. Don’t get me wrong, I love her entry (definitely one of my favorites this week), but it’s always funny when people start arguing about gender politics considering that the TLIID artist most likely to draw scantily-clad hot chicks every week is a woman.

Also, I can’t wait for next week. I don’t have Twitter (and don’t plan on getting one), but my favorite themes are the ones where the artists get to play with different art styles. Make me proud, suggesters!

So I take it the X-Men/Avengers strip-off is a no?

A grand total of two people have complained about sexism, Boz. Knock yerself out.

If the characters shown are really meant to represent specific candidates, then Captain America is clearly Gary Johnson.

Damnit, I wanted to see some hungry hungry hippos

Love all the pieces this week, always fun to see what the artists pick. One minor nitpick… Mic… why no love for Dazzler’s 70’s disco look? Silver suit, skates, Kiss make-up… mmmm… discolicious…

I had not really assigned candidates to the characters in specific when I composed the piece, I just assumed the specific characters for the GOP debate were selected by the tweeter for their color values. I was very happy with how the colors came out, consequently.

However, I can totally get behind picking up Michelle Bachman by the head. Glad that so many liked the piece.

I just assumed the specific characters for the GOP debate were selected by the tweeter for their color values.

That’s funny, I was assuming it was because most of the characters were likely to be Republicans (except for Beast & Cap – Steve Rogers is definitely an FDR New Deal Democrat). The “I’m becoming a Libertarian” line kills me, though.

I just can’t stop looking at the little animated jiggle Mic gave Dazzler. Did she really have a costume with a glowing crotch? Weird.

Dazzler vs Scarlet Witch Dance Competition

This is the first time I’ve ever been, in any way whatsoever, interested in Dazzler.
She’s a lousy character.

Beast and Tigra chasing a red dot is hilarious. And so obvious. It’s a wonder no supervillain has ever done this before.

My favorites:
-Iron Man vs Forge Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots
-Classic Avengers vs Uncanny X-Men in Family Feud
-Scarlet Witch vs Domino in drawing straws

Thx for this you guys and gals. It brought a smile to my face on a very long day….. No way can the “real” AvX match the pure pleasure of this….

“Humor columns are wasted on the humorless. ”

Indeed! We should ban such people from posting here!

(See what I did there? ;D )

Love the Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots! A close second was the Family Feud. I thought the worst suggestion was Hulk vs Colossus in a thumb wrestling match. Anyone with half a brain could tell you HULK wins it THUMBS DOWN! The art was fantastic though, as always.

Emma Frost was definitely supposed to be Bachmann. Haven’t quite figured out why I picked Beast other than to have another X-man on the roster, so between that and the color theme thing, we’ll just pretend I knew exactly what I was doing.

I already explained Iron Man and Cap as well as I can. Angel was supposed to be the other white rich guy running, but I don’t believe character wise he was supposed to be like Romney. Although now that the color thing has been brought up, I may have leaned more towards archangel just to really drive it home.

Rulk was pretty easy to include for a variety of reasons.

I may have had it in my head that one or more of the GOP candidates have switched parties at some point in their career, but doing a little wiki-research, I would appear to be completely wrong.

In any case, you made the piece turn out better than I could have hoped, Thea.

When I pulled my hamstring, I went to a misogynist.

Excellent job, TLIID artists & suggestion-givers!

Thanks for the love, NICK MARINO & SIJO! :D

Many thanks for the articulate post, ANXIOUS PENMAN.

haha Sorry for the website plugs, SOME STUPID JAPANESE NAME! They’re actually 2 separate .gifs, which explains the 2 plugs. I’m a HUGE fan of animated .gifs and I feel lousy when I come across ones I dig that aren’t linked back to their creators cuz I’m left frustrated and wondering who did the work. Knowing who gives me inspiration is very important to me and I figure there are other illustrators/designers/artists who feel the same.

No worries, BECCABLAST. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.

BIG MIKE: For most of my pieces, I make a conscious effort to try to go for the more updated looks and incarnations of characters. It’s the progressive in me. I love disco Dazzler (I even drew her performing w/ Bill Clinton once), but if I drew her as such, I woulda been forced to have her do an all-too-expected dance from the days of yore like The Hustle… and I wanted to bring her (and Wanda) into 2012. And in 2012, we booty dance in the clubs. lol It’s actually also my personal look back at my dance crew days when other dancers and I tried to make each other laugh during practices pulling such moves. Girls AND guys. haha Fun times.

Anyway, I’m very glad to have helped a few people look at SW &, for the most part, Dazzler with a fresh pair of eyes. Thanks for the opportunity, ASTROZAC!

Peace.

“Misogyny” is definitely the wrong word. So’s “sexist”. I’m having a hard time finding the RIGHT word, though. Immature? Demeaning? Dumb? I can’t decide.
