A Word About the Ultimate Characters in the Spider-Man Friends and Foes Poll
I’ll be releasing the first batch of results later today, but I thought I’d make a quick mention that I’ve decided to drop the Ultimate characters from the poll. Only three Ultimate characters showed up in either of the two polls, and they were all bunched together at the bottom of the Supporting Cast poll (#19, #22 and #24) that I think it just looks weird.
I also think that I underestimated the strength of Spidey’s supporting cast, as some good choices otherwise would have missed the Top 25. I initially believed that I needed the Ultimate characters to strengthen the pot of characters, but that does not appear to be the case. So I’m just going to leave the Ultimate characters out. You can read on to see which three characters would have made it and where they would have ranked.
24. Ultimate Mary Jane Watson

22. Ultimate Gwen Stacy

19. Ultimate Kitty Pryde

Ultimate Gwen and MJ deserve to be so, so much higher.

No, they don’t.

A sensible choice, though now I’m a little sad I wasted a vote on Ultimate Kitty. It was a tear-jerking process to only pick 10 supporting characters.
But Kitty was a strange case where voting for 616 Kitty didn’t make any sense.

I think spidey has the best supporting cast in all of comics.
I dropped the latest ultimate book recently, not because I didn’t like Miles Morales, but because I really missed the whole supporting cast from the old USM and they were as much a reason I enjoyed that book as spider-man was.. The highschool dynamic of Gwen, MJ, Johnny, Bobby, Kitty, Kong, and even the jerk flash thompson and the dynamic they shared made that book so enjoyable. I really like miles morales but His supporting cast seems like copies of characters elsewhere, the exception being his parents

Wait, voting’s over? Damn.
I had a short list for the supporting characters with about fifteen names or so on it. I started a villains list, but could only think of maybe half a dozen really good villains. I probably would’ve filled out the list, but I set it aside, then the week got kinda hectic, and the time got away from me. Never got around to picking the list back up.

I always thought of Ultimate Spider-Man as the BEST told What-If ever… but that Kitty Pryde romance was both a surprise and an emancipation from my previous view point.
Thank the comic Gods that Marvel didn’t inact upon my initial fears and turn the Ultimate line into ‘The New 52′.

It won’t be showing up until later in the day, so if you get one finished soon, I can probably still work it in. I haven’t even really started the villains list yet (I just checked it over to see if any Ultimate villains got enough votes to get close to the Top 25 and they did not).

I’m happy Ultimate Kitty got some support. I didn’t vote, but she would have been in my top 5 for sure.
I generally think the decision to make Kitty into a Spider-Man supporting character and her date Peter was sort of the moment that Bendis really got in the zone writing Ultimate Spider-Man. I generally love the whole run, but the majority of the early stories were just modern takes on the Lee/Ditko/Romita stuff with a few tweaks and twists. But throwing Kitty into the mix really gave the book it’s own trajectory. I thought the relaunch of the book from a few years ago, with Aunt May running the home for wayward superheroes, was the best the book had ever been, and I was sad that status quo was so short lived.

Dammit, forgot all about this poll… Hope I’ll have something ready in time.

Glad I voted for 15 characters in case some of my votes didn’t count. I had these 3 plus ultimate Ben & May in my top 15.
