The Line it is Drawn #87 – What Would Their Kid Look Like?

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific, Friday, April 27th).

The topic is…

Comic book characters on reality shows! Aquaman on the Deadliest Catch, the Real Superhero Wives of New York City, the New Warriors on American Idol, etc. Idea courtesy of our own Thea (with a twist by our own Josh)

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

What if ___ and ____ had a baby? Name two comic book characters and our artists will draw their offspring/gene splicing! Idea courtesy of our own Axel Medillin!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Cynthia Rocked it! Great execution. I also liked the last one a lot, but the artist’s name isn’t attached.

Steve Howard has officially won the Internet! That was totally wrong and hilarious!!!

The last four were all winners to me – Robin/Starfire, Deadpool/Harley Quinn, Namor/Sue Storm and GA/Zatanna!

BTW, the Avengers opened yesterday and got some great reviews!

I also liked the last one a lot, but the artist’s name isn’t attached.

Oops, I dunno how that happened. It is fixed now. Sorry for the momentary lack of acknowledgment, Josh!

As to next week’s theme, didn’t the New Warriors being on a reality show lead to some problems? :)

Anyway, this week was a sweet batch, although my praising everyone will undoubtedly bother Sijo :)

Crap, I need to find my Doop speak alphabet for that Groot/Doop one. Nice work by Brendan.

Ah, wish I could have seen Bill drawing that piece over the weekend. Alas!

Finally, I just want to know how Conan bested Sonja in combat to lead to that baby…

Damn! Has anyone else got a renewed jones for more Amalgam Comics after this?

Artists. once again you fine folks have hit this out of the ballpark…

I loved the “Red Conan”, and the Captain Marvel, and to a lesser extent Bolt Canary, designs can easily be used by either of the Big Two. “Zat Arrow” and “Swamp Ivy” are absolutely adorable while “Atlantis Storm” looks regally threatening.

SquirrelBall and Groop had me laughing out loud along with Canary Bolt Jr…. and welcome back Chaz with the insidious Galat-May…. However the Lil Daryll within me squealed with joy with the DeadQuinn Twins (Happy Anniversary FOX!) and the StarWonder pics….

Thx guys and gals for upping your game each and every week!

Great work, guys! Marco, loved the “Married with Children” reference!

I love the variations and how each artist chose different ages to make the kids!

I favs are Chaz’ geriatric Aunt Galactus, Steve Howard’s Lil’ Conan (I admit, it took a second for me to get the Conan O’Brian ref, and then I also noticed the talk-show format with the rag doll… very funny and nicely rendered!), Thea’s new Nightstar amalgam, and John Trumbull’s Captain Marvel Jr.!

The Groot/Doop combo looks like Snorkledorf from the old Freakies cereal. http://www.freakies.com/

Epicness all around. Such great work this week (well, every week) So much awesomeness

Prepare for another long post of impulsive TLIID commentary by me! (and PLEASE keep your sense of humor on at all times. Thank you.)

Galactus and Aunt May: I thought the concept this week was about what their kids would look like, not just merge them? (also, anyone remember that story where May became a Herald of Galactus? XD) Still, funny, and nice to have Chaz back. ?

Speedball & Squirrel Girl: Oh my God! Not only this is logical, it’s a PERFECT MTU homage, and it even has The Space Turnip in it!! Win!! (So far)

Black Bolt & Black Canary: Hum… other than the name play, not much going for it. (Nice Kirbyesque design, though.)
(Bill Walko’s take was more fitting to the basic concept of the week. And hilarious too! XD)

Red Sonja and Conan: Ok, I wondered “What’d be so unusual about that?” then I noticed the baby. HAH! (VERY good B&W art here btw.)

Groot and Doop: I hate Doop. Groot is cool though. (Which one is the female, btw?) Anyway the result looks like a pokemon, so it’s OK.

Starfire and Robin: Didn’t this already happen? In one of those Alternate Future things? Still, VERY well drawn!… even if I can’t tell if it’s a boy or a girl. (Intentional?)

Captain Marvel (Shazam!) & Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel) – a new Marvel Family: I LIIIIIKE IT! GREAT design plus it has that old Shazam! charm that DC *sigh* just doesn’t seem to get these days.

Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing: Ok, I winced at the idea, but this turned out to be DAMN funny, not to mention the best so far at applying the “child of” concept of the week so far. Congrats!!

Deadpool and Harley Quinn: Not quite as funny as the above one, but still, a great take on the idea. And VERY well drawn! Love the little details like the crayon scrawlings. ?

Namor and Sue Storm: Again: Boy or girl? Can’t tell! (But visually very impressive.)

Green Arrow and Zatanna: …I don’t really see the idea/joke behind this one, but gosh is it pretty! Congrats!

LOTS of good stuff this week! Still, if I have to choose, Swamp thing was the funniest, Conan was the best drawn and MTU was my favorite (with Captain Marvel a close second.) Thanks to everyone for their ideas and hard work!

Beginning countdown to someone slamming me for my comments: 10! 9! 8!…

Sijo, I too was pleased for the Deadly Space Turnip’s appearance here.

I’m just surprised that the daughter of Black Bolt and Black Canary looks just like Carol Danvers.

Great stuff from everybody this week. Well done.

@Sijo – “Namor and Sue Storm: Again: Boy or girl? Can’t tell! (But visually very impressive.)”
Ummm… girl! This is what happens if you don’t give women Adam Hughes sized breasts! I can tell you that Stormita (that’s her name) has all of her father’s and mother’s powers and is joyously regal at all times. That aside, thanks for the kind words!

Awesome job again everyone. Swamp Thing/Ivy and Red Conan are my favorites.

Can someone with a Twitter account please suggest something for me;
Mera, Marrina, Dorma, Dolphin and Lori Lemaris in… wait for it… The Real Housewives of Atlantis.
Make it so.

The Red Sonja and Conan one delivered the best, which made me laugh out loud when I got it. The Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing was great too. And the Robin/Starfire was well drawn and thought out.
Is it just me or does the Black Bolt/Black Canary one look like Warbird/Ms. Marvel?

And Amalgam Comics did do a Captain Marvel amalgam between the two characters, though I think they went with a green scheme…

wow.. everyone killed it!..
steve’s conan o’brien made my day..
awesome stuff..

can’t wait for next weeks theme..

1. Is it me, or does “Groop” look like a messed-up Pokemon?

2. Seeing the Swamp Thing/Ivy combo . . . after reading the “Demon” stories, I wonder why Ivy and Ra’s Al Guhl never hooked up.

3. Wouldn’t a child of Billy and Mary be one of incest? Just sayin’.

4. There’s already a Kori/Dick kid of sorts . . . Nightfire from Kingdom Come. My compliments to Thea for the sweet and original look, though.

Jason: A child of Billy and Mary would indeed be one of incest–which is why it’s a good thing that the suggestion had to do with a child of Billy and Marvel’s Carol Danvers instead.

Astrozac: It’s not just you. I thought (and said) the same thing.

Appropriate that there’d be a Conan O’Brien reference.

3. Wouldn’t a child of Billy and Mary be one of incest? Just sayin’.

It would, but this is the son of Captain Marvel Billy Batson and Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers, so it’s all good. Billy didn’t even use any of Immortus’ machines to seduce her or anything. :)

And Amalgam Comics did do a Captain Marvel amalgam between the two characters, though I think they went with a green scheme…

That they did. That was mashing up Capt. Marvel and the Kree Mar-Vell.

I’m just surprised that the daughter of Black Bolt and Black Canary looks just like Carol Danvers.

Yeah, I didn’t realize just how much the costume I designed looked like Ms. Marvel until I was in the coloring stage. I considered changing the hair color, but black wouldn’t have contrasted with the costume enough and red would’ve made it look like Medusa was the mother. So I stuck with blonde. :)

The character’s name is Songbird in my mind, BTW. But if anyone else has a better suggestion for a name, I’d love to hear it.

I demand that Ivy/Swampy and GA/Zatanna be given a team book immediately. Throw in Starfire/Robin, too! They’re all DC, it would totally work!

Re: Next week’s TLIIS
I believe The New Warriors already had a reality show…which began “Civil War”.
So…take from that what you will… ;-)

I have not missed Chaz. His art is definitely the worst of the bunch. Always has been. The previous weeks without him have been the best.

I have not missed Brandon. His comments are definitely the worst of the bunch. Always have been. The previous posts without him have been the best.

“Cover those flowers”
Wooow. I that definitely incited a hardy laugh out of me. That’s perfect.

I have always felt Chaz was the Picasso of our troupe – he takes all the rules of ‘realistic’ art and quite deliberately breaks them. His pictures always have that warped, ‘outsider’ quality. And as with Picasso, some people just don’t “get it”. There’s nothing anyone can do about it.

Nick rocked it all day long with Stormita. Channeled his inner John Byrne all the way. I’d swear John did it himself.

Thanks for the correction. Very sorry I didn’t read the description. Follow-up: would ANY incarnation of Billy Batson have enough game to woo Carol Danvers?

Love that “Groop” used actual Doop-speak.

And, of course, any appearance by Speedball is automatically the best picture of the bunch.

Okay, for once I only have one favorite: Deadpool and Harley Quinn, if only for the Married…With Children reference.

Follow-up: would ANY incarnation of Billy Batson have enough game to woo Carol Danvers?

Captain Marvel’s a good-looking dude who’s got the wisdom of Solomon, so I’d imagine he’s got pretty good game. :)

Plus, Carol has been known to drink a bit. :)

I’ve always thought of Chaz as being in the Daniel Clowes school of art. I dig his unique take on the characters.

Some very cool designs this week. love the Harley/Deadpool With Children. Love the designs on Zatanna/Arrow and Nightwing/Starfire. “Groop” rules though, awesome combo.

Not to mention that Solomon has a traditional weakness for the ladies — wisdom isn’t always able to handle libido!

Although I do kind of wish you had gone back a few weeks and gender bent the costume a bit — let’s see Cap’s legs some!

Would it be wrong to say that Nightwing finally got a Flamebird of his own? Either way, that is an awesome pic!

Deadpool as Al Bundy — complete with the hand in the waistband — yes!

In fact, after looking over them, I’m hard-pressed to find anything I dislike — which means that my name is not English for Sijo (jesting only, dude!)

But, no mic? Please tell me that you’re coming back soon!

the green arrow/zatanna girl is cool.

i see some fanfics coming out of this thread.

I was going to say that maybe Travis is the one who needs a sense of humor bought around here BUT someone else got that award this week! For the record, while Chaz’s art isn’t my personal favorite, I admire his dedication to his work (plus it’s always been funny) so I’m honestly glad to see him return to TLIID.

Btw, I’m not slamming people who don’t comment on every artist; I’m just saying that, given how ALL of these people knock themselves out week after week for us -FOR FREE, TOO- the least we can do is acknowledge them beyond simple “everyone was great.” At least pick the ones you liked best and comment on their work! They want our criticism!

“And Amalgam Comics did do a Captain Marvel amalgam between the two characters, though I think they went with a green scheme…

That they did. That was mashing up Capt. Marvel and the Kree Mar-Vell.”

D’OH, my bad I didn’t read it that it was Ms. Marvel, and not Mar-Vell.

The Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing is brilliant.

I’m baaack… for Brandon and anybody else who hates what I do, because I hate what you do, too! If you have time to type up that I’m the worst and that I’ve always been terrible, then tell me why I’m bad. Then maybe I can see what I’m doing “wrong” and not hurt your eyes every week. That too much to ask? I welcome the criticism. If not, I’m gonna make damn sure my art deviates even further from the norm until Spiderman and Space Cabbie are just weird squiggles.

For those of you who like what I do (or at least supported it): THANK YOU! I do this for you!

Ha! What a return!

How could anyone hate on the man who gave us the Adventures of Afro-Seid? Or Para-Squirrels? Or that supremely disturbed mash-up of Xavier and Magneto with CatDog?

Chaz stands out — you can say it resembles Clowes, but not everyone can pull that off — and, seriously, being influenced by Daniel Clowes is BAD? In what universe? If that’s a sin, let me be evil — please.

Chaz’s art is very ginchy… and every Madman fan knows that is a good thing.

Welcome back.

Xum

“”Chaz stands out — you can say it resembles Clowes, but not everyone can pull that off — and, seriously, being influenced by Daniel Clowes is BAD? In what universe? If that’s a sin, let me be evil — please.”"

I did say immediately after the Clowes comment that I dig his unique take on the characters. I’ve been a long time Chaz supporter.

I forgot about Afro-seid, one of my faves! Chaz always seems to do great with my suggestions. I’m still proudest of the Keith Richards still being around with Spider Man 2099…

Wolverine and Elektra!

Thank you for the support, people! You all make participating in this feature all the more AWESOME!!!

What a great week! Great topic and all great executions.
I loved Steve Howard’s version of my suggestion and Alex Medellin’s Swamp Ivy!

I always love when people shout out suggestions for last week’s theme in the comments. Freebird!

@Daniel O’ Dreams Done! Great choice!

@buttler: Freebird would be the kid of Phoenix and Mister Miracle, right?

@sijo: my…my sense of humor not there? What! Ah, I can take it. We josh each other around here because we love each other (I really do love your comments, Sijo. I just like to tease!). It’s all in good fun.

Unless you’re a Chaz hater, then you’re just mean. Chaz’s stuff isn’t always my favorite, but he’s got a good sense of humor, and most times the creepy vibe of his art works in favor of his pieces. That Magneto/Xavier CatDog one from a while back — ewww!!! And that was the point of it!

The Starfire / Robin one had been done in the Kingdom Come comics, Mar’i Gayson was a cool character.

You probably wouldn’t believe the number of Twitter suggestions that come in that make me say, “It’s been done.” But you better believe that my TLIID colleague see this as a challenge and will strive to do what’s “been done” differently… and in many cases just as well or even better.

Just MHO.

Xum

@Travis: Of course I’m just kidding. Though I sometimes worry that my comments might be misread as the ramblings of an humorless troll. Glad to know they are appreciated.

And I’m definitely on Chaz’s side! I mean, of ALL the great creations in TLLID (and we have had some AWESOME ones) the most memorable is, of course, AFROSEID! How can I not not realize that? ;)

In keeping with this week’s theme, Chaz’s pieces are like Clowes and Kirby had a baby. If you don’t like that you’re wrong.
