The Line it is Drawn #90 – The Beastie Boys, Comic Book Style!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific this Friday).

The topic is…

In honor of the late Tony DeZuniga, come up with ideas for drawings starring his most famous creation, Jonah Hex (which he created with writer John Albano), in some fashion. Team-ups, mash-ups with films, TV shows, paintings, video games, Jonah Hex doing mundane tasks, whatever you’d like!

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of the late, great Adam “MCA” Yauch, mash-up a comic book character(s) with famous Beastie Boys videos.

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion (although I’m fudging the order a bit to make sure the same video isn’t used back to back).

Man, I thought I knew more Beasties stuff, but damn, I’m not fly. Or illin’.

Or something.

Anyway, everything looks cool.

I would have guessed more Sabotage, but Nick’s piece covers that one well.

Daniel Cox’s Optimus storyboard kicks ass!

I do know enough Beasties to know that Marco got that cool Whatcha Want background effect.

I hate saying this since I hate when other people do the “you should have done”, but I would have guessed there would have been the X-Men’s Beast in here. Ah, the artists probably thought that was too easy. And dum.

And one of my favorite Beasties lines, from where I’m not sure, is “I’m like Vaughn Bode, I’m the Cheech Wizard”. Yeah!

And I hate this too, suggesting something for next time without using the Twitter, but Jonah Hex getting a spa facial treatment. C’mon, it’s TOO easy!

Bravo, guys. That was really sweet.

Brilliant work by my fellow artists this week. Chaz’s No Sleep to Brooklyn and Nick’s FF in Sabotage have to be my favorites. :)

The FF in Sabotage is awesome and MCA with Logan and Scott was such a nice touch of respect for the man. I’ve been listening to Beasties for 2 weeks now. Stil gutted. :(

Great work by everyone! Here’s my favs this week:

I love Xum’s Batman in “Body Movin'” – and the choice to illustrate the more mundane end of the video. HA!

Marco D’Alfonso’s “Whatcha Want?” looks great, too. Great mash-up and rendering!

But my favorite this week is Daniel Cox’s “Intergalactic” with Optimus. The concept of the rejected storyboard is genius, and the way it’s presented and drawn is full of WIN!

Awesome work as usual, but…

– Steve Howard’s is beautifully drawn and in character… respect! my favorite this week.

– Daniel Cox’s Optimus Prime Intergalactic Storyboard is cool and so is Nick Perk’s Sabotage FF.

How is Adam talking if his mouth is full of beer which he is about to spit in Cyclop’s face?

These just keep getting better and better. i think this is my favorite week yet!

So many outstanding ones!!!

Now it looks like it’s time for a Donna Summer tribute. Hey, at least it could guarantee some Dazzler art?

Awesome work all around!

Love the Batman – Body Movin, it truely put a smile on my face
and Steve Howard’s one was equally as good.

I have been listening to the Beastie Boys since I was 7 years old, after my sisters bought License to Ill on tape I would love watching their videos, and hanging out with my sisters listening to it. RIP MCA, i can never forget how much you made my childhood so much fun.

Batman in Body Movin’ was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long, long time.
Wonderful triubutes, all! Well done!

FF – Sabotage was just added to my revolving desktop-background rotation. Thanks, Perks.

Steve, great job on the (almost inperceptable) watering in Logan’s eyes. If you can get Wolvie to tear up, you know it’s something serious.

I know it’s been said by a few people above, but MCA’s passing hit me pretty hard, so thanks to Brian, all the artists, and all who made the suggestions for a fitting tribute.

Surprisingly enjoyable for featuring my least favorite band ever.

Planetary with Intergalactic Planetary was something I’ve always thought ever since hearing about the Planetary comic because what the hell you can’t NOT think it.

And now many more will never be able to not think it.

Also, the Optimus Prime thing is totally tops.

Great all around guys. Thank for this. RIP MCA

Wow. These are ALL incredible, and each one made me smile. Very fitting tributes to a true musical mastermind!

Loved the ones based around:
She’s In On It
The Wolverine and Cyclops one
Hey Ladies

Oh and let’s not forget–the Beasties beat the Backstreet Boys on Celebrity Deathmatch.

I know almost nothing about the Beasties — except for the Fight for Your Right video — so that one I could really appreciate when the “bad people” show up…

I need to find that hey ladies video to fully appreciate how well Thea and Bill caught it — but something tells me they nailed it — didn’t realize there were that many X-ladies!

but Sabotage — oh wow, Nick, that is awesome! And I love the execution on Optimus Prime even though I know nothing of the video — nice work!

What part of the joke am I missing that Axel has Jimmy Olsen in the middle of all those beauties?

Indeed! See for yourself– I actually did a screen grab –at the 2:46 mark

@BeccaBlast, actually I went for a much, much obscure reference (not really planned at all, it just happened)… probably not even die-hard Daria fans will get it: http://www.outpost-daria.com/ch_upchuck.html

I’d like to earnestly thank everyone involved with this week’s entry. Like a lot of other folks, I found myself really moved by Yauch’s passing. Though he likely isn’t, he seems to be the first of “our people” to go by non-suicide, non-drug methods …I dunno. It hit me hard, and this stuff never does.’

Wonderful work, and thanks for the idea and everything, Mr. Cronin.

So good! A great tribute to a great musician! Awesome job everybody!

For the purposes of the piece, I’m going to assume that the giant robot’s name is ‘Intergalactic’ and they need to be introduced to each other.
Intergalactic, Planetary. Planetary, Intergalactic.
