Cover Theme Game for 5/23

Every week you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” “They’ve all been cloned (who HASN’T been cloned?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers. The connections will ONLY have to do with comic books (so no “they share the same last names of Vice Presidents,” etc.).

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything! Same thing with corner boxes!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!

Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.

Good luck and enjoy!

This one is tricky, but I think gettable.

No one guessed last week’s suggestion by buttler. There were plenty of interesting guesses, but trust me, folks, if you figure this one out you’ll know for sure. So I figured I’d give you all another shot at last week. I changed one of the covers to make it a bit easier.

In the new one, all those characters are now gay in the new 52.

And for the overall theme of both games, they’ve all had sex with Hawkeye.

Or something.

In the new one…..is the connection that all the named heroes have had more than one secret identity?? Spectre being Jim Corrigan/HalJordan/Crispus Allen….Green Lantern being Hal Jordan/John Stewart and the various identities of Dr Fate and Hourman?

All three have hair issues. Supes no longer sports his mullet. Hal Jordan got rid of his gray. And the Psycho Pirates was hair today bot gone tomorrow.

Dang, I forgot to guess last week! Oh wait, I guess that wouldn’t work.

All of them have some magical talisman on the cover: spear of destiny, GL lantern, and the medusa mask.

I probably ought to stop making my joke guesses in the first comment of these posts, cuz then I screw everybody up and make them think that it’s ok to guess in the comments. Me sorry!

I edited one of the covers based on a guess by buttler where he rightly noted that the initial cover wasn’t precisely accurate. Enough of you guessed correctly even with the slightly inaccurate cover, but just in case you were confused by the earlier cover, here’s a new one.

When you post the answers, could you tell what the inaccurate cover was?

I can tell you right now.

It was this one.

I’m not seeing the new cover yet–it looks like the old one’s unchanged in the mix up top.

(And thanks for the shout-out!)

Is it showing up now?

Sure is! And it’s extreme!

Each cover has a mystical talisman involved in the jla/avengers x-over

All of them have awesome art teams? Damn, that’s a JHW3/Mick Gray GL issue?!?! Day-um!

My first guess still holds :)

I blame Travis–whenever anyone does the internet wrong, really.

That explains a lot, buttler.
