The Line it is Drawn #92 – Conan Tribute to Ernie Chan

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific this Friday).

The topic is…

After having such a constrictive theme the last three weeks (although well worth it to honor three great artists), I figured I’d just let our artists have a lot more freedom this week. Therefore, the topic is team-up two comic book characters from different companies. Just name two characters and our artists can go nuts with how the two characters will team-up.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of the late Ernie Chan (and, to a certain extent, the late Tony DeZuniga), come up with ideas for drawings starring a character they are well known for working on, Conan the Barbarian. Team-ups, mash-ups with films, TV shows, paintings, video games, Conan doing mundane tasks, whatever you’d like!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Great work, everybody! A worthy tribute to the great Ernie Chan.

Now all you suggestion-givers out there get busy!!!

The Librarian and the Late Night ones are brilliant! Also enjoyed Kindergarten Conan and Danaerys. To be honest, this was the best week of work in a loooooong time. I don’t think the talent has ever been this sharp!

Wow, that Bone one is incredible!

DON’ CHEW KNOW DA DOOEY DESSIMAL SESSTEM???!!??

TOO many good ones this week! Lots of laughs. Well done, team!

For the next week(wrong place, i know):
Duela Dent/Squirrel Girl
Harley Quinn/ Deadpool
Batman/ Wolverine

Great week. What’s not to like?

Adventure Time: Liked the twist of drawing the characters is a realistic style, rather than translate Conan in AT style. Nice.

Late Night with Conan O’Barbarian: Great joke, and great likenesses (a weakness of mine). Well done. I would expect Triumph’s act to be… cut short.

Conan and Hostess Fruit Pies: I see you have taken the “mash up” request quite literally. Unexpected and entertaining. And until now I thought Hostess had used cinnamon…

Conan, Dog Groomer: The expressions of both Conan and the patron really sell the joke. Great job.

Conan and Zelda: What a fun piece. The look on Link’s face is priceless.

Conan the barbarian and beautician: I almost considered this choice myself. You executed (!) this much better than I would have done. Love the ginchy details.

Conan and Doc Savage: Great touch adding other Ernie Chua (Chan) elements into the mix. I would definitely read this story.

Conan and He-Man: Great joke! Now I’ve got Reboot’s “’Cause we’re livin’ with B S ‘n’ P!” song in my head…

Conan the Librarian: I can see at least 17 flaws in the cover drawing. CGC case looks real cool though.

Conan the Kindergarten Cop: I can definitely hear Arn-nolt’s voice as I read this. Awesome.

Conan Cologne: “Eau de Cimmerian”? Sounds “Barbaric” indeed. And is that opera music I hear? You’ve definitely captured the style of the advert.

Conan the Barbarian and Daenerys, Mother of Dragons: “One way or another”… uh, oh. Great art and great likeness. The 3-D coloring (another weakness of mine) is stunning.

Conan adopting a kitten: This is just wonderful. How often do we see Conan and Sonja like this? A-plus for originality.

Conan and Granma Ben: The detail and coloring is fantastic. And this tough guy likes quiche. I want to reread Bone to my kids now.

Looking forward to the next challenge.

Wrongplace: I have good news for you, my friend. It’s not on the archives yet (assumedly Brian just hasn’t had time to update it in a while), but the Deadpool/Harley Quinn crossover you desire happened just last month in the “Draw the children of two characters” theme. Bonus: D’Alfonso (if I remember correctly) knocked it out of the park, with a “Married With Children” TV show parody.

Possibly worth clicking through pages of frontpage archives for. Seriously.

Late Night with Conan O’Barbarian: Great joke, and great likenesses (a weakness of mine). Well done. I would expect Triumph’s act to be… cut short.

Thanks, Xum! Actually, I was imagining Conan kind of liking Triumph’s act. He probably goes for slapstick and physcial comedy the most, but I’d guess that Triumph would be just stupid/goofy enough for our favorite Cimmerian to dig.

True. I was presuming Triumph would take some “potshots” at Conan… which he may not take very well. But I tend to overthink things…

Xum

…And is this our goriest week ever, BTW?

True. I was presuming Triumph would take some “potshots” at Conan… which he may not take very well. But I tend to overthink things…
If Triumph was dumb enough to do that, yeah, Robert Smigel might be missing a hand. :)

One of my favorite Triumph moments ever was when he was tearing into Eminem at the MTV Awards, and one of Eminem’s lackeys tried to shut Triumph up by using his hand to CLAMP THE PUPPET’S MOUTH SHUT. Hilarious!!!

This was a fun week! You guys did an awesome job!

Thea

They’re all good, but Xum, your Conan the Librarian is *completely* perfect.

As I mentioned last week, I’m no big fan of Conan (barbarian heroes are not my type) BUT I have faith on the TLIID contributors (both the ones who bring the ideas and the ones who actually draw them) so let’s see what they came up with!

Adventure Time with Finn and Jake and Conan: I can’t stand Adventure Time, it’s too weird for me. But oddly I actually find it cute done in Conan style! But Conan’s look in his eyes as he holds up a boy is… worrying. Oo

Conan’s new hit comedy… “Late Night with Conan O’Barbarian”: Ugh. Bad joke, worse delivery. Even if I didn’t like Jay Leno better than O’Brien. There I said it! Nice art tho, especially the logo.

Mash up Conan and Hostess Fruit Pies. Nice Hostess Pies Ads homage, but eating Conan? Kinda ruins it for me. Instead, he should have defeated the hooded ones with pies and maybe ate some with a wench afterwards. Also, art is kinda sketchy.

Conan, Dog Groomer. Geez, what’s it with the gore jokes, fellows? I mean yes Conan killed a lot of monsters and people, but that was rarely for humor. If you like that kind of joke fine, but I don’t. That said, best looking art piece so far.

Conan teams up with Zelda. Now on the other hand, THIS made me laugh because Conan both fits the setting yet he doesn’t fit the atmosphere. And at least the enemy killed was a monster not a poor pooch or a person. VERY cute art too!

Conan the barbarian and beautician: See, now THIS is how the Dog groomer joke should have gone: you can imply the client is going to get beheaded without showing it (or the blood anyway.) Also is the client supposed to be some celebrity?

Conan and Doc Savage. Oookay, best one so far overall: concept, art, and even has Dracula as the bad guy. Congratulations!

Conan and He-Man. Another example of how the dog and Leno jokes should have been done. Well, a little bloody but the art softens it. (“Um, that’s just the remains of my dinner. I’m a messy eater” XD ) Really funny and Walko’s art is charming as usual!

Conan the Librarian: Whoa! Another really well done one! Nice Conan comic book homage (complete with “sealed in plastic bag” gimmick) art that could have come from the Marvel comic itself, and best of all funny without killing anybody. Win!!

Conan the Kindergarden Cop: I guess this one is a natural thanks to Conan’s most famous actor being AH-NOLD. But it manages to be cute and funny (and man, wasn’t that “lamentations” line lame?) Nice art too.

Conan the product endorser (of, say, cologne?) Another one that’s REALLY well drawn, especially the “perfume bottle” design. But otherwise not much happens in it (yeah most perfume ads are boring too.)

Hey how about that, not only I didn’t hate this week, I actually enjoyed most of it! As usual, my gratitude to everyone who contributes to TLIID, and I hope you appreciate my stopping by to comment on everyone’s work too! ?

The Conan/Bone one is amazing.

But wait!! I missed three!! Were these posted while I wasn’t looking? Whatever, here are more comments!

Conan the Barbarian and Daenerys, Mother of Dragons: Conan and WHO? Eh, I get the joke anyway. You just know his whoring ways would get him in trouble like that sometime. Nice, and pretty art too.

Conan adopting a kitten. Sorry, is Conan in this picture? I’m too busy drooling at Sonya. (Kidding aside, cute and nice art by Perks as usual.)

Conan and granma ben take on legions of rat creatures: Now THIS I know comes from Bone, though i have yet to see it (I will one day, don’t worry.) Pretty funny. Why doesn’t he just hurl away the pie? It must be REALLY delicious! XD

Ok, NOW I’m done! See you guys next week!!

This might be the strongest week yet, excellent work, Liners!

Conan’s new hit comedy… “Late Night with Conan O’Barbarian”: Ugh. Bad joke, worse delivery. Even if I didn’t like Jay Leno better than O’Brien. There I said it!

I expect you Jay Leno fans to be EXTREMELY familiar with bad jokes. :)

Nice art tho, especially the logo.

Gee, thanks for complimenting the one part of the piece that I had nothing to do with…

Great work all! Of course, I loved the Doc Savage/Conan/Dracula the best!

Hey, a suggestion for a future topic: Groups of similar characters. For example, Angel, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl, or Warlord of Mars & Martian Manhunter, or Yellowjacket Wasp Tinker Bell & Bumblebee.

Looking forward to next week. It’s going to be fun.

Good stuff. I find the Kindergarten Cop piece hilarious, and I’m not sure why. Hmmm. It must be Conan saying “That’s good!” That somehow ties the elements together. Works for me!

I was happy to see Conan and Daenerys. He could come off a bit tougher, but the illustration is lovely. Conan the product endorser… interesting choice, not taking the humorous route. Instead, we’re seeing a different side of Conan. Love his expression there.

So many pieces to love this week, really. It’s hard to pick, but my favorite might be Conan and Zelda.

*Love* Daniel Cox’s work, from the opening panel Spaghetti Western motif. Dynamic work, great stuff.

What about AzBats and Squirrel girl?
ambush Bug and Punisher
Miracleman and Ambush Bug
also V and Deadpool

Sijo: Bone is not a cartoon. It is a comic book. I wish it were a cartoon, but it is not. At least, I don’t think it is. . .GOOGLE TIME!!!

Oh and great work various artists! I liked all and hated none! Favorite was. . .too close to call, actually. I think it’s between Conan O’Barbarian and the He-Man one. Oh, and the Bone one. Oh, and also—maybe it’s all of them, come to think of it. Darn.

Conan the Librarian was in UHF (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098546/).
You can see the scene in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZHoHaAYHq8

“I expect you Jay Leno fans to be EXTREMELY familiar with bad jokes. :)”

Who do you think Conan learned them from? XD Kidding aside I like both Conan and Leno and watched them back-to-back for years, their difficulties were NBC’s fault not theirs. And at least neither is as bad as Letterman! (Runs away!) :D

“Sijo: Bone is not a cartoon. It is a comic book. I wish it were a cartoon, but it is not. At least, I don’t think it is. ”

I know that. Sorry if I used the wrong word there but hey, Native Spanish-Speaker here, I may not sound like it but I screw up when translating my comments sometimes. Also there WERE plans for a Bone animated film at one point but I don’t think it was ever made.

Daniel: “Conan the Librarian was in UHF”

Right. So I made sure to present… “something completely different.”

Xum

Sijo: The Hostess Conan is “sketchy” because that’s what the old Hostess ads looked like. It was usually pretty silly.

I enjoyed them all, but seriously, Bone+Conan just takes it. Amazing all around.

Is that supposed to be Thulsa Doom in the barber’s chair?

Nick Perks – awesome!
Dog groomer – i guess im the only one who found this in poor taste

Xum – shame on you to rip off the entire UHF bit without properly crediting it. Its obviously obscure enough that only a few folks noticed. One day an original idea of yours will get ripped off and you’ll understand.

Nice! Way to thanks Tony and Ernie! Approve!

Martin: I have actually had my ideas stolen quite a number of times, so I do understand.

So on behalf of myself and Kholdstare21, therealAstrozac and VBartilucc –, the Twitter users who actually presented the idea to “The Line It Is Drawn” — I would like to give proper credit and apologies for my alternative take on this obscure reference to “UHF,” as well as to “Reading Rainbow”, “Mother Goose and Grimm” and “You Can’t Do That On Television”, whose individual concepts preceded it, and also the William Mitchell College of Law and the Trinity College Dublin School of English, who brilliantly expanded the concept afterward.

I do not believe any of these Conans ever pushed over an entire bookcase to enforce the silence rule, and given who that person is at the bottom of the book pile, that concept is figuratively and literally on me.

Xum

Sijo and Basara: Thulsa Doom it is! James Earl Jones rocks that whig like a CHAMP!

Great work this week, everybody!
