The Line it is Drawn #96 – Comic Book Characters and TV’s Community!
Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!
I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.
Now on to the bit!
So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!
To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific this Friday).
The topic is…
Noir-ify ‘em! Pick a comic book character and our artists will do a noir take on them.
Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Naturally I like them all – but John Trumbull’s is just…. Super.
And Xum’s idea for “abed and evil abed as hal and sinestro” was WAY better than mine – good thing he grabbed it!

Must confess that I’m not terribly familiar with Community (have never watched it), but my sister will be quite pleased that her suggestions were used.

I’ve never seen the show, but I will say I think the art is great. That kryptonite one is especially cool.

Now I can’t stop thinking of Gillian Jacobs as Black Canary. Perfect.

Lots of great pieces this week– Senor Strange Chang is the awesome sauce, Marco.

Sean McFarland did the best job of really capturing the tone of those characters. It sounds silly but I could hear the voices of the characters when I read their dialogue. Great job.

Axel won. DAMN YOU (shakes fist at the sky)!!!!
Great job, everyone. Some funny stuff. Now I must find a way to watch the show…

how was the study group as the cover of Justice League International 1 not an option?

I love this week so much I want to marry it, move to the suburbs, and have 2.5 kids together. My favorites have to be Josh’s perfect Plastic Man Dean Pelton gag, Xum’s Green Lantabed (I LOVE the dialogue: “We’re the same actor playing a dual role!”), and Sean’s Study Group as the JLI (I agree with MarkBlack that Sean NAILED the dialogue).
GREAT work, everyone, especially considering that not everyone had seen the show before (Although Sean & Steve bean tell me that they became fans over the course of this assignment. Cool. CoolCoolCool).

I am actually dismayed by the complete lack of Shirley, sans the one appearance.

I really wanted to see him and Magnitude show up in these.

Chaz did Starburns as the Silver Surfer, Vincent.

Trumbull speaks the truth! I have to say, I am now a fan of the Community! Hulu it up if you haven’t seen it! You will not be disappointed.
Great work this week guys!
Much props to Steve, ‘Thea, and international art star John Trumbull, for taking my ideas and making them one million times more awesome than I could have hoped.

Is anyone else now convinced Joel McHale would make a perfect, like spot on perfect, Booster Gold?

Aw, shucks. Thanks for providing such great ideas, Sean! And I’m only a coast-to-coast art star right now. Don’t be giving me a big head!

I’ve only watched a few episodes, but from what I’ve seen of the show, it’s hilariouse! Nice job, guys! I have to say, I loved Chang as dr strange, I almost wish I had chosen something with Chang, I love that guy.
Phil… I feel your pain. Of course, Brian did create a few other realities with the coin toss, so somewhere out there in the multiverse, Phil got his wish and Axel got shot in the leg. Way to go, Phil! Lol

June 28, 2012 at 4:35 pm
And somewhere in the multiverse, Thea wins all the coin tosses…

Oh, what a glorious/frightening thought. I’m sure there would be world destroying asteroids involved in that scenario.

I love that there are only about a dozen people who are getting Axel’s joke.

What Squashua said. ^ Somebody needs to do Shirley as The Wall and the Suicide Study Group.

June 28, 2012 at 7:59 pm
How many coin tosses would it take to find a universe where no one complains that they don’t know what the reference is? (Cutting out a felt goatee just in case)
All Axel needs is a wading pool and it’d be perfect —
I hope @RashisTVUgly or @EvilTroyandAbed have been alerted to this awesomeness….
Somebody called Huntress sassy, didn’t they? As lethal as she is with that crossbow, she’s even deadlier at the foosball table, you know….
And I STILL think the only interesting way to settle AvX is with paintballs! (But I can understand why that might have been too much to draw in one week…) Although Utopia covered with a blanket fort is also an interesting idea…
Steve, John and Josh absolutely nailed the dialogue as well as providing clever art; and Dean Watcher is perfect… always thought Uatu had a certain creepy side to him!
Unfortunately, Dan Harmon got banished to the Isle of Silence — but Season 4 is only 4 months away! Only two seasons and a movie left to go!

June 28, 2012 at 8:20 pm
And Mr. Trumbull — I believe you have got the true essence of Chang — as frightening as that may be… major kudos sir!

June 28, 2012 at 8:50 pm
Oooh, that’s a good idea! Hollywood — Cast Yvette Nicole Brown as Amanda Waller RIGHT NOW!

And thank you, Becca! Quite a compliment!

How have so many people not watched this show? I have been a fan from not quite day one, more like the second episode of season two, but still …This is the greatest show on television. And this … this installment of Line … this made my day, nay my week.
Daryll B.
June 29, 2012 at 7:00 am
For once the comments compliment the craziness of the pictures EXACTLY. Yvette as The Wall… Thea winning all the coin tosses… Becca and Axel…. come to think of it, in an alternate universe this could be the Community cast right here in the comments with Brian as Dean Pelton…
*shudders silently*
Anyway, great job by all the artists in capturing the humorous tone of the show….
(and yes I agree that AvX would be a million times better as the Community Paintball To Tha Death Episode!)
Back to the Isle of Silence for me….=)

There may be hope for Jeff yet — I was wondering why no one used the Greendale logo — but there it is — on the phone! And if that’s a GCC-issued phone, then the Dean can have it turned off — and achieve his dream of having Winger eternally grateful to him…
Another evil plot foiled by Really-Small-Reference-Obsessed Girl!
Thank you, thank you — I accept honoraria and gratuities of all sorts — preferably not in small denominations — stuffing them in my pockets makes my hips look even wider…

Glad you caught that, Becca! Good eye!
And if that’s a GCC-issued phone, then the Dean can have it turned off — and achieve his dream of having Winger eternally grateful to him…
That’s more than I thought out the story for the cover, but I have a feeling that any phone issued by Greendale would work half the time at best.
