The Line it is Drawn #103 – Video Game Characters Meet Comic Book Characters

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific this Friday).

The topic is…

In honor of Labor Day, superheroes go to work! Imagine all the crime has been fought. So come up with new jobs for superheroes using their powers in new and interesting (and I presume odd) ways.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Video game characters team-up or mash-up with comic book characters. Blade and Simon Belmont team-up, Deadpool in Halo, etc.

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

I love how the Atomic Robo-Sonic mash-up looks like it’s a photo taken of a CRT TV. The Conan one managed to make me laugh at a joke that I thought was stale.

Mega Man, not Sonic.

My favorite is Superman shedding the Mario disguise, because it actually seems like something that could have happened before Crisis.

The Hulk one is hilarious.

LEEEEERRRROOOOYYY JENKINS = Always funny. :)

Not only is the art great, Sean nailed Robo’s personality.

Hi, I have a couple of podcasts that need some artwork done as banners and so on. The MacGyver Podcast and The Never Gets Old podcast both at podomatic and iTunes. For the Never Gets Old podcast we are looking for a different combos of us(the hosts) and our favs from TV, Movies, Comics and Music. Please email me with any guestions. all will be used:)
Thanks,

Mac

These are absolutely perfect.
Hulk/Frogger, WoW/Avengers (Love it that Hawkeye and Strange don’t need any alterations), PacMan and the ghosts, Bouncing Boy/Pong, so much greatness here.
And then it ends with one of my all-time favorites, Planetary…
I’ve got the widest grin ever on my face now.
Thank you people, thank you.

Several are excellent, with the Hulk mashup in particular making me laugh out loud, but Xum Yukinori has captured something essential about DC in the late Seventies.

The Avengers/WoW mash-up is perfect. Leroy Jenkins. I’m still chuckling.

John Trumbull’s piece for it’s sheer clever humour, and Cynthia’s knocked it out of the park.

While Hulk vs Frogger is funny, perhaps Marvel’s Frog Thor (Throg?) or Frog Man would have been a better fit, although admittedly obvious.
Or have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the turtles trying to stop Frogger?
Or maybe I should stop thinking about this too much?

@Silverside: Yes, you are thinking about it too much. LOL. Just enjoy the awesome piece of art it is!

These are all awesome! But I think the best have got to be John Trumbull’s Pac-Man for it’s great cartoony-ness and Xum Yukinori for his awesome Legion of Superheroes– it looks just like an old DC, right down to the pull out comic! Great job!

Ok Hulk in Frogger wins, because it made me laugh out loud.

Great week of art. I am always surprised when one you guys choose one of my tweets. Steve’s take on Conan and Skyrim was hilarious, and Axel’s Laura Croft and Planetary is beautiful. And of course, I’m not at all biased about Thea’s Avengers as WoW characters ;b Completely didn’t see that when I suggested the idea, so kudos to my wife for that one.

Nice entries everyone, but GTA: Gotham City would be welcome as a poster.

“Unabashedly conceited”? Is there something I should know? LOL!

Bah, everybody knows you fight Wood Man BEFORE Air Man.

Seriously though, these are wonderful and I think that one’s my favorite.

Great work all around!

My highlights were the Luthor/Bowzer team-up, and I loved the Bouncing Boy and Hulk/Frogger ones especially!

Only if you actually need Wood Man’s Leaf Shield to beat Air Man. Atomic Robo clearly doesn’t need to take any of their weapons to smack them down :)

Hulk doing the “Leeroy Jenkins” = PRICELESS. (Though we all know that he’ll last much longer than Leeroy did!)

If i have to choose favs, Loved John’s Pac man and Bill’s GTA Gotham! Brendan’s Hulk/Frogger – exactly what I was thinking of doing on that piece, we are so simpatico. Lol

Great work all around this week guys!

Axel, those boobs are getting more spectacular every week, bro. You must be studying! :::mwah::::

Favorite ones:
-Bill Walko’s GTA
-Snake Eyes/Chun-Li
-Hulk Frogger
-Pac-Man
-Atomic Robo vs the Robot Masters
-The WOW one
-Lara Croft in Planetary (need to check that series out)
-LOS Pong

To anyone who knows Jason Gonzales (who drew the Snake Eyes/Chun-Li), very fitting pairing, since Chun-Li actually had her own action figure in the GI Joe line in 1993:

I thought this week’s topic was lame when it was announced. But, boy, I was wrong. What a fun week. Snake Eyes & Chun Li (I always used to play her), Lara Croft/Planetary, and Pac-Man were my favorites but gems all around.

Thea, one must suffer in the name of art ;)…

And great work, everyone… Hulk/Frogger and Pacman take the win, imho…

Fantastic week!

And I love that Deadman sounds like he’s channeling Brunhilda (even though I doubt John has read the webcomic she comes from.)

Never doubt John; he has access to knowledge of realms far beyond our imaginations, young one…

OK, dirty confessions time — I have never been a Hulk fan, and rainbow Hulks didn’t help. But Josh sure do draw him a pretty raging behemoth, don’t he? (Before PAD tells me to do something anatomically impossible, what I’ve seen of his Hulk stories IS as close as I’ve come to liking the big lug).

Then Brendan does Frogger and Thea brings Leeroy Jenkins into it — I’m suspecting a plot to convert we few brave hold-outs — and why does Thea’s Spider-Armor look better than anything in Ends of the Earth?

What does Pac-Man do with all those Peter Pan shoes once he eats the DC ghosts? ANY DC ghosts?

Just a few short weeks ago he was an meek and abashed assistant editor/librarian — now behold the Bronze Age glory of Professor Xum! Brilliant and manipulative enough to have Luornu playing with her husband and herself at the same time! Um, wait…

I’m going to blame that last comment on over-exposure to Sean’s Atomic Robo piece — so much wrong and right with it, I can’t even begin to explain — but I do want to see his piece next week, where Machine Man will be stuck in a customer service call center! Whaddya mean, it’s been done!?!?!

What I know of Skyrim is that my ex-roommate would be playing the damn thing at 2 AM — but Steve is good enough to barely overcome that built-in animus…

Axel, Lara Croft and Planetary — and a thousand Jakita/Lara slash fics are born — but I have to say that Axel understands the difference between being sexy and sexist, and it is greatly appreciated — and I know a whole lot of writers for whom English is their first language that cannot write jokes as well as he did in this panel.

This week’s TLIID was exceptional! Every one of these entries knocked it out of the park.

Loved every one. Damn near perfect week.

Also, no matter how close to “GTA: Gotham” we already got with “Arkham City”, I don’t care. I would still play the hell out of that.

Thanks, Becca, you made my day! My english teacher would be proud.

Actually, we were at a catholic elementary school, so she’d probably cower in horror…

Amazed you can draw, as often as she must have rapped your knuckles with her ruler —

Mine threw erasers — I swear that she had a slider.

And I love that Deadman sounds like he’s channeling Brunhilda (even though I doubt John has read the webcomic she comes from.)

Never doubt John; he has access to knowledge of realms far beyond our imaginations, young one…

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Becca, but I must confess that KAM’s right. I’ve never read that one. Do you have a link to enlighten me?

The webcomic tends to jump around with various characters, but her first appearance is http://www.drunkduck.com/The_KAMics/4771883/

After that you can find her in the Gertrude & Brunhilda cartoons in the dropdown menu.

For what it’s worth, John Trumbull was using a very familiar joke structure, not “channeling” a character in some webcomic. Maybe it’s worth nothing, I don’t know, but there it is.

Incidentally, his picture was my favorite this week.

As an update of sorts, has anyone else noticed that Walko’s “GTA: Gotham” piece has gone viral? I’ve seen it on a handful of geek/gaming sites, and seen friends post it on Facebook. Luckily, most of the sites have attributed it to Bill, but I’ve tried to clear it up on those who don’t.

Thanks for lookin’ out, TJ
