The Line it is Drawn #104 – Superheroes Get New Jobs!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 6:00 AM Pacific this Friday).

The topic is…

Based on a suggestion from our own Xum and in honor of the news that Spider-Man appears to be gaining a sidekick, come up with a sidekick for a superhero who has never had an official sidekick!

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of Labor Day, superheroes go to work! Imagine all the crime has been fought. So come up with new jobs for superheroes using their powers in new and interesting (and I presume odd) ways.

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Love, love, love Gonzo’s Ghost Rider!!!!

…My favorite part of this week? Hef’s bunny slippers. :)

Should have made Hugh Hefner look like Stan Lee.

Ok, love the Clerks reference, and I don’t want to nitpick, but doesn’t the description suggest that Superman is Randall, not Dante? Otherwise, such a perfect scene.

Love Ghost Rider: Highway Patrol, such a beautiful, minimalist interpretation. Love it.

Charles interviewing for the headmaster position… hilarious. As was Dr. Strange, birthday party magician.

Great work everyone. One fine set of submissions this time!

Are we making up new sidekicks, or assigning existing characters as sidekicks?

Jason Gonzalez absolutely blew this one out of the water. Beautiful. This column is a fun spot for aspiring amateurs, but it’s rare that pro-level talent like Jason’s is featured here. Love it.

Man, I can’t wait to go on a bunch of forums and post these pictures with no attribution!!!!

Ghost Rider by Gonzo is amazingly cool! Definitely the highlight this week!

A bunch of good ones, but John’s Professor X one takes the cake for having a solid narrative in addition to strong pencils.

Heh. I just got the riddle. The answer was the same advice I gave my son yesterday when his little RC car wouldn’t start.

But, what are the answers to the Riddler’s riddles? I know the Poe/writing desk one.

That Chaz piece should go viral, worth every death threat from upset fans.

But killer round from everyone.

@ MonikerNV Hef holds the clue.

why does Wonder Woman have blue skin?

i LOL’d at the Xavier one.

Is the answer to the Riddler’s second riddle something related to “turn on” (“turn on” to highway; “turn ons” for a dating profile)? If so, 3 hours is a horrible amount of time for the instruction of “Reboot your machine”. Perhaps this is the origin of a new villain who was turned into a psychopathic killer after being “helped” by the Riddler

I thoughts the answer was “turn off” myself…

Two answers to two riddles: Turn on and turn off.

Man, I can’t wait to go on a bunch of forums and post these pictures with no attribution!!!!

DAMN YOU, BURGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

I can’t believe I’d rate a cartoon with a naked Playmate #3 but Drs. Strange and X were top notch.

It’s cool how Steve Howard let Peter stay true to his character even in a skeevy Playboy setting. J. Jonah Jameson wipes the floor with Hefner as a BOSS!

Whatever you’d like.

Stong work as always. I agree with everyone that Gonzo’s Ghost Rider is an amazing piece of design, but as far as just plain design and composition go, I think both Cox’s Ben Grimm baseball card and Xum’s Doctor Strange cover deserve honorable mentions. From an art student’s standpoint, those are all put together so perfectly.

The torn page on the Strange Cover? So great.

Great work everybody! i think like most people this week i looked at Jason’s work at just said awesome!

thanks John I’m sure he must wear them around the mansion all the time
Should have made Hugh Hefner look like Stan Lee.
Believe me true believer I thought about it
I can’t believe I’d rate a cartoon with a naked Playmate #3
Thanks Mark believe it or not an old teacher of mine suggested I get playboy to practice drawing the female figure while I was at university

Steve

I thought Ben Grimm was a Mets fan.

Oh no, here we go again… Tell them it’s an alternate Earth Ben, Daniel! That’s what I did! :)

I love that Johnny Storm is trying to prank the Thing on the baseball card by igniting his bat.

I thought Ben Grimm was a Mets fan.

I know plenty of guys who grew up fans of one team but ended up being drafted by another. Mark Teixeira of the Yankees, for instance, was an Orioles fan growing up (although he was also a fan of Don Mattingly, but then again, so were many young baseball fans in the 1980s).

^ I kept going back and forth on it myself, thinking he was a Mets fan. But ended up going picking Yankees, because if heroes are out of jobs looking for work, the Yankees would probably pay more…

Some really great ones this week! :-)

Maybe Ben joined the Yankees as a Trojan Horse?

Amazing work this week all — quick comments:

Phil: “hurm”…hehe. Great drawing!
Xum: Loving your on going cover mockups. The ripped cover was genius!
Chaz: So wrong…but so good. Are they inside a cave or an asteroid worm?
Axel: I knew eventually we’d see Supes on an iPad!
Sean: Haha…spot on with the riddles. Love his relaxed pose at the office:)
Nick: Perfectly captures the Sandman spirit…lovely!
Thea: “I’m not even supposed to be here today” — hahahaha! Love it.
Brendan: Pizza Hell — perfectly envisioned bro.
John: Clap, clap — big effort this week and a great payoff for the work.
Gonzo: Very cool ….nice designy piece.
Steve: Haha…fantastic rendering and love the look on Hugh’s face.
Cox: Bit rushed this week…could have been better.

Dr. Strange is the bomb, especially that little 70s Superfriends bumper reference. Makes me remember watching Robin give Batman the Heimlich. totally classic

OK — I think I beat the deadline this week — hoping some of them are picked — well, one of them, please? Not a specific one – -any of them will do…

An attractive blonde in an interesting position on the couch, Rorschach on his knees with his hands clasped in front of him — did Phil lose the coin flip with Chaz? I kid, I kid… but I don’t think I’ve ever seen lil Wally Kovacs that compliant. Phil’s stuff always opens such odd doors in my head — which IS a compliment.

I’m beginning to that it was Xum under my bed as a kid — the way he continually nails all those little details is downright CREEPY! Also hilarious, down to the ripped-up cover!

You want to know how good Chaz is? He takes a knuckle-dragging suggestion like “Make Diana a dominatrix — like Marston wanted, heheheh” and makes it wild and FUNNY!

I want Axel to explain how the “black rectangle vision” works — Clint Eastwood’s friends and family probably wish they could unsee some things this morning…

Well, I got it half right — Sean DID pick a customer call center job! And, if he wants to do a three-page version of this, say, I would love to know who the manager would be! I’d suggest the Phantom Stranger or Rama Kushna.

For the sequel, Thea, may I suggest Clark and Diana in Chasing Amy? With JLA Dogma as the capper…

Love the idea Brendan — tip GR, or get the guilt trip of your life!

I will be surprised if JT’s piece isn’t linked to TVTropes “Professor X Likes Making Teenagers Sweat” page by sundown — just give him credit for it, willya?

I really can’t say anything more about Gonzo’s piece — the elements and arrangement are just classic — a southwestern GR SHOULD embrace that look!

Enjoy your holiday Steve — we will be eagerly awaiting what you come up with when you’re rested!

The above poster is way too hard on Daniel Cox — and since he is a Yankee, this is OBVIOUSLY the universe where “Utau” calls the Yankee games! Right, Trumbull? If this is rushed, rush more often — a smiling Ben Grimm is a joy too rarely seen.

Ha! Thanks Becca. I’ll take it as a compliment and see what odd doors I can open for you next week.

Exactly! Can we send a No-Prize Becca’s way, please?

I just checked the page, and no go. Although the page now seems to be titled "Danger Room Cold Open".

Hey, I was just joking around, guys. It was great work. They all were. (And for the record, Go O’s!)

Becca, the black rectangle vision is a special power that every school nun teaches to children all over the world… it becomes reflex and takes a lot of practice to turn off…

I still don’t get the riddles, dammit.

And Benji is a Mets fan, and I doubt that the Thing would have to go through the draft. So Becca must be right!

Y’know, you guys wouldn’t get your pieces spread willy nilly around the internet without attribution if y’all weren’t so damn good. Get in some talentless ringers! I volunteer!
