The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 4
It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something (if I get that far, I’ll discount the “skip week” Diamond Comics will be having between Christmas and New Years this year)? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!
This week, we’ll go with Chris Giarrusso’s variant cover for The Walking Dead #103, homaging Tony Moore’s cover for the first issue of The Walking Dead (“homaging” in this instance is simply Giarrusso re-drawing the same exact cover as Moore just in Giarrusso’s own style).

Four weeks down! Will we make it to week five?

Second week in a row where the cover is a variant rather than the primary. I guess it’s necessary, but I rather feel it’s a bit of a cheat when it’s not the mainstream cover. Variants are aimed almost exclusively at hardcore fans who gravitate toward that kind of navel-gazing.
Also, I’ll chip in my two cents and add the wish to see the original cover alongside the homaged one. It’s clear many readers here are looking them up anyway. What harm is there in posting the two side-by-side?

Man, this just makes me miss Mini-Marvels all the more.

I agree with Jazzbo. I miss mini-marvels. I love Chris Giarrusso’s art. I was really hard-pressed not to purchase this cover this week. I refuse to buy two copies of the same book. If Adlard’s cover wasn’t so darned good, I would have bought this one in a heartbeat.

When you say homage to “something” does that infer you’re looking at images other than other comic covers? Are stuff like Movie posters, Album Covers, Book Covers, famous works of art, etc also included?

Yeah, it can be anything. A few weeks back there was a cover that homaged Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. That would have counted.

Any chance you could include an image of the cover(or whatever) being homaged when you do this? Offhand I haven’t a clue what the cover to Walking Dead #1 looks like.

Well, this is the first one so far where I can’t picture the original at all, and even seeing the homage doesn’t help ring a bell. I’ve read all of Walking Dead in trade, but I’d just have to take your word for it that the cover of #1 was something along these lines. I can easily look it up if I want to see the original, of course, but personally I wouldn’t have known this one’s an homage.
But yeah, Chris Giarrusso is awesome. Mini-Marvels is still my favorite, but I like his own G-Man as well. Hooboy did I feel burned when I picked up Hulk-Sized Mini-Hulks thinking it was a continuation of his Mini-Marvels, when in fact it was mere imitation written by someone else, and poorly.

This would typically be an instance where I actually would show the original, as it is not that famous, except that the original is just the exact same cover only drawn by Tony Moore. So the homage in this instance is simply Giarrusso re-drawing the first issue of The Walking Dead in his own style. He did one for this week’s Cyberforce, as well, just re-drawing Silvestri’s cover for Cyberforce #1. So it seems kind of pointless.

You know, as a trade waiter I really have a problem with the covers to the Walking Dead trades. I do really like the look of them, but to my eyes anyway they all look alike. I never have that moment of, “Hey look, a new volume!” It’s always, “Wait, have I read this one already?” The only way I can ever tell if it’s new to me or now is to flip it open and start reading.

Amen, buttler. I’ve been tempted to start collecting the singles just to get some of the more distinctive covers. But I’ve got all the trades and no singles, so that’s probably the rut I’m going to stay in.

Daniel: Wow, now that I look at it, I don’t know that I’ve ever even seen that cover before. Thanks!

SPAWN has had a run of homages lately, FYI.

Yeah, I bet that one of them will eventually end up here!
