The topic is…

It’s Halloween time! Mash-up non-horror comic book characters inside of famous horror stories! Films, movies, TV series, whatever! It’s a perfect time for the 113th edition of Line it is Drawn!

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of the passing of one of the last great Golden Age Marvel Family creators, Marc Swayze, this week is all team-ups and/or mash-ups of comic book characters with characters from the Marvel Family.

Enjoy!

Nick shared a quote by Marc Swayze with me that inspired him in this week’s piece. “My personal philosophy was to use the art in storytelling so that even a child who couldn’t yet read could get a story out of it.” You definitely met that standard this week, Nick!

LOVED Mic?’s piece – the moment I saw what Captain Marvel was eating, I thought that someone FINALLY threw in a Filipino cuisine reference. (I also wanted to see Billy’s reaction on eating a balut.)

Actually, I liked all of these – though Billy changing into Carol Danvers would have been best served with a “SHAZAM…?” instead of “SHAZAM!” The “Hollywood Squares” homage was quite funny.

Looks like it’s time to get back on Twitter to submit my recommendations…

John Trumbull does a brilliant job with the facial expressions in his piece. The look on Tawky Tawny’s face is pure, solid gold.

I love the Archie one, although I would’ve preferred the more traditional DeCarlo-style art.

I also love the Aunt May wedding.

Billy Batson/Carol Danvers looks incredibly thrilled over the sight of his/her boobs.

John Trumbull FTW! Rest are awful. :P

Wow, was it really necessary for you to insult everyone else in order to pay me a complement, Joe?

So, Peter is Aunt May’s maid of honor?

Wow. I thought this week was a terrible idea. Yawn. But, wow, you all proved me wrong (suggesters as well as artists). Great job all around. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Is it just me or is LIID not showing up on the main CBR page anymore (these last few weeks)?

Just you. ;)

Seriously, though, it has been there. Maybe not always on Thursdays, but it has been there every week. Even during NYCC.

Such a great tribute to the Family. Must confess that Mic?s piece has got me lost not getting the reference, but it sure looks good ^_^

@Big Mike – It is Cap meeting Captain Barbell, a parody of Cap.

Fun stuff this week–which is appropriate for the Marvel Family.

I can’t decide if the chick on Captain Marvel’s shoulders in the last piece (I don’t know who she is) is taking a cigarette out of a pack or drinking a juice box, but I’m just going to choose to believe the latter.

Fantastic work this week! :-) I cracked up several times reading these!

Buttler, said chick is Roxy Spaulding aka Gen13’s Freefall, and those are cigarettes. I do believe all the girls are Wildstorm characters, Gen 13 and WildCATs members

I think “subway wizard” is how everyone should describe Shazam. Also, Billy seems very pleased that he turned in to a woman in Thea’s piece. Also also, I’m mildly surprised to know what Captain Marvel’s eating there. Guess my time in Hawaii paid off.

Steve Howard made my day.

“How you doin’?” :D

@Big Mike and Buttler,

Yes, those are Wildstorm characters. Zealot (standing on the left) and Voodoo (in front) ara WlidC.A.T.S. members, and FreeFall (on Captain Marvel’s shoulder) and Fairchild (standing on the right) are members of Gen13

Ah, Dinuguan. It’s actually pretty good, especially when made by my Filipino friends in Fremont. Though when it comes to blood pudding, I prefer a few cubes of ?? from that one shop on Clement street.

I have not tried Balut… yet.

Xum

I see that Chinese characters do not show up here, I see.

I meant “xi? dòuf?”, or “blood tofu”. Exquisite.

Xum

Oh yeah, I knew they were WildStorm characters at least. I could never get into those series, but I recognized Fairchild and Zealot because they showed up in the occasional crossover that I read. Now if they drank juice boxes, I might have liked them better. Juice boxes can be extreme too! Honest!

@Xum – Balut tastes like eating a hardboiled egg yolk. I finally had one when visting my cousins in the PI a couple of years ago.

(I just made sure to eat it with my eyes closed.)

Damn, I didn’t know about the theme. I had this idea for awhile . . . where a mix-up results in Billy and Mary Batson getting an all-powerful and cheerful genie anytime they shout “SHAZAM,” while Chuck and Nancy wind up becoming Captains Marvel anytime they merge ring fragments and shout “SHAZZAN!” Also: Talking Tawny meets Kabubi [sic?] the flying camel. Is it too late to ask for that?

loving the John Constantine team-up! DC should do that one.

More good stuff! I especially like the Marvel/Isis piece. And Marvel/Mork is very original.

I may never be able to erase the image of Fairchild actually hugging Captain Marvel’s hip with her buttcheeks! It’s so wrong and so funny!

Pikachu/Shazam is my favorite!!! Such a clever mash-up idea, and cool art. “SHAZAM!” in pokemon language must be “PIKAAA!”

Wow, they’re all cool. Great stuff everyone. And, y’know, boobs.

But this bothers me — In Steve Howard’s piece, the sign on the door says “Captian Marvel”. No wonder Billy was confused!

Um, because I’m too lazy to look it up, where does Captain Barbell appear? Is it a webcomic or sumpin’?

sorry it bothers you Travis, i didn’t get much time to do my piece this week, hence the simple colours too, so I didn’t run it though the spell check but as some one who is dyslexic im just glad I spelt squares correctly! ;p

Just call him a drillrod, Steve; he’s used to it by now…

It’s not a bad idea to stick to basic primaries with Captain Marvel; I wish DC would remember that!

Hey, Billy is a growing boy — I think that expression of Thea’s is EXACTLY what he would have if he suddenly found he had boobs all his own!

Brendan showed a few weeks back he could draw Billy — his Cap is dead-on perfect as well; and Robin Williams looks, dare I say, almost entertaining for once.

Chaz’ mash-up catches the spirit of both — and the thought of a Captain Huggyface/Hoppy team-up should make even Mitt Romney leave PBS alone! (Yeah, probably not)

Two from Nick (as usual), and both take Mark Swayze’s lesson to heart. And, oh yeah, Cap is definitely worthy.

John Trumbull is not only very talented, he makes me feel in good company as a comic nerd — and if Brian can’t find a “cover homage” to keep his string going, this will do — Dudley even has the Doc Ock grin! (Although I still do want to see Dudley and Volstagg trading war stories over a couple of beers — root or otherwise.)

Archie meets Mary meets Kitty with a manga edge — untangling the latest nefarious plot of Captain Xum should take a few issues, right?

Captain Barbell? I like the idea Mic? put forward on his Deviant page – that a Filipino hero would invite his “rival” for a meal – with a Superman tablecloth, no less! – but I kinda hope Billy just swallows the balut whole, or there will be more than chocolate Kirby Dots on his lightning bolt.

Sean takes one of my least favorite things ever and makes it fun – which means Cartoon Network will buy another season of the damn thing and I will have to listen to my nephew explain the latest plotlines. Damn you, fleshy one MacFarland!

Now this is a Constantine that even Sonia Harris wouldn’t complain about seeing in the mainstream and Paul H proves he’s not bigMike under another name! (joke)

Well done, Mr. Walko — but I think the “older man travels around the country with an unrelated young boy in a Winnebago” pitch might need a little retooling.

I’ve been pretty hard on the new 52, but if that was Voodoo’s original look, there is something to be said for it — and I have to give Axel credit for playing off Cap against the moronic poses and insane costuming of the Image women. Nice job! (And, if you haven’t bought it yet — go buy Hoax Hunters; it’s a truly wonderful book!)

I am now going to have nightmares bout Billy being played by Joey Trebbiani — everyone here in the East, stay indoors and keep dry! See you after the storm!

John Trumbull is not only very talented, he makes me feel in good company as a comic nerd — and if Brian can’t find a “cover homage” to keep his string going, this will do — Dudley even has the Doc Ock grin!

While I did look at the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #131 while I was doing this (Aunt May’s wedding dress is more or less the same), I’d only call it an “homage” in the loosest sense — there’s really only so many points of view that you can use to show a wedding.

And I doubt it would work for Brian’s cover homage feature either, since it hasn’t been published and featured in Previews. :)

Thanks, Becca! And you have impeccable taste in comics! Thanks for the support!

(And try a Google search, you’ll see I left out a lot of weird stuff from Voodoo’s costume)

Yeah, like Becca says, Steve, just call me a drillrod. That’s ok.

I’ll just go back to looking at the boobs in your piece instead ;)

Just saw this. Glad to see that the artists made reference to the whole kid-to-adult thing! That’s always been the unmentioned 1 ton elephant in the room as far as the Marvel Family goes, hasn’t it?
