Cover Theme Game for 10/31

Every week you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, a trait all three creators share, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” “They’ve all been cloned (who HASN’T been cloned?)!” “They’re all mutants! (who ISN’T a mutant?)” “They’re all legacy heroes (who ISN’T a legacy hero nowadays?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers. The connections will ONLY have to do with connections in the actual comic books (so no incidental connections like “they share the same last names of Vice Presidents,” etc. Now, if the three characters were each named Gerald Ford, that’d be another story, as that’d no longer be incidental).

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything! Same thing with corner boxes!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!

Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.

Good luck and enjoy!

This one is easy enough that I think I might only accept answers that phrase the answer in the exact way I’m looking for (something that ties in with Halloween, pun-wise).

I get a laugh just from seeing the infamous Iron Man-with-a-nose set of armor!

No idea what the theme is, but that’s one awesome Adam Hughes cover on Catwoman.

He has a bunch of great ones around that time (plus some odd ones).

Not such a fan of that cover, although his technique is great. Catwoman looks like Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and Holly like the sheer weight of her chest has her bending forwards.

I’m on some sort of weird streak here. I look forward to the three months in a row during which I just scratch my head.

they’ve all had sex with Starfire?
no, that can’t be it, everyone has done that :-)

Whoa, sorry if I spoiled the answer for anyone. Because I never, ever get these, I just figured there was no way my guess was right. That’s why I put it in the comments earlier. Sorry!

The halloween link of the answer is too American for a Brit (of my age and innocence) to have a chance at.

I did wonder about the controversy with the new 52 Catwoman and Redhood issue 1s and wondered if they could be linked to Hawkeye’s one-night stand with a doom-bot.

Of course, the Halloween link had me wondering if that while coming back from the dead was too commonplace, these characters had had their pasts altered so their deaths had not happened to them making them “un-dead” (this is much rarer than coming back from the dead as most who do so didn’t really die in the first place [narrow escape, not quite dead, an imposter dying] or it’s not really them coming back or they were resurrected or they escaped from some afterlife)

The halloween link of the answer is too American for a Brit (of my age and innocence) to have a chance at.

Sorry, John, I freely concede that occasionally I’ll lose track of how American-oriented a particular clue is. At least I’m not doing non-comic related themes anymore! Those got way out of hand and were also extremely American-driven!

I know what you mean.
while I have only recently found this site I did have a look at the early ones and the second one almost put me off trying any others…I’m glad there are no more to come like that one..
