The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 8

It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something (if I get that far, I’ll discount the “skip week” Diamond Comics will be having between Christmas and New Years this year)? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!

This week, I’m going with Eddie Nunez and Blond’s cover for Fanboys vs. Zombies #8, which must be homaging the film poster for The Usual Suspects.

Eight weeks down! Will we make it to week nine?

Maybe, but my first thought was ‘Love & Rockets’ http://www.comicvine.com/love-and-rockets-/37-124240/

Well, Tom, the colouring is much more reminiscent of the movie poster, so I’d tend to go in that direction. (Besides, that Love & Rockets comic came out a good decade after the movie did, so they could both be homaging it.

It’s worth noting that both the girl in the pink hat in the above cover and the girl in the tank top on the Love and Rockets cover have stances very similar to that of Kevin Spacey’s character on the Usual Suspects cover. That’s probably not a coincidence.

I take that back. The girl on the Love and Rockets cover turned out to be an optical illusion. She’s actually folding her arms.

Yeah, while I was going to go for it already (I think enough of the composition of the cover resembled the poster to cinch it as an homage), the arm grab on the cover definitely doubly cinched it for me.

The colours suggest Usual Suspects, otherwise that police line is failry common, I think?

And the L&R cover linked above homages the cover of first L&R collection, Music for Mechanics, only the later one is all about Maggie:

Oh yeah, if not for the colors, I would probably have been too close to call it. With the colors, though, it seems clear.

This is the actual first issue of Love and Rockets, the one above is the first issue of volume 2. This issue predates Usual Suspects by more than a decade, so maybe that was an homage to it. Probably not.

Well, they’ve pretty much directly copied Spacey’s pose with the pink hatted girl, and Gabriel Byrne with the guy in the middle so I think it’s fair to say it’s an Usual Suspects homage.

Boy, I sure hope the story title of this comic here is something clever like “The UNusual Suspects”. HAHAHAHA!!!

This one’s obviously homaging Marvel’s New Universe D.P.7 #1.

I agree with the homage, but my first thought was about how unrealistic these “fanboys” look?

They look like superheroes.

I doubt this cover was a Bebop homage but it’s what I thought immediately;
