3 Chicks Review Comics is a podcast featuring female comics lovers and bloggers Sue from DC Women Kicking Ass and Kelly Thompson from She Has No Head! Tune in to CSBG every other Monday at noon as we review comics and discuss hot topics of the week. In addition to the blogs above, you can also follow us all on twitter as well: Kelly and Sue.  Special thanks to Nik Furious for our awesome 3 Chicks theme song.

*As always beware of spoilers if you haven’t read the books in question! Advance reviews are always spoiler-free!

I need a physical copy of Kelly’s book. C’mon, how am I going to finish my Christmas shopping otherwise?!

Thanks for another episode. I thought I might weigh in on the grilling Kelly gave Jeanine Schaefer over pulling the plug on series before they can find an audience.

In the current enviroment, ongoing comics don’t seem to attract readers in a net sense – they gradually lose them. From a pure numbers game, the high-ups in editorial can often legitimately judge which comics will (regardless of quality) turn out to be sales flops after only one or two issues. I strongly suspect this happened with Marjorie Liu’s excellent Black Widow series.

With that in mind, rather than suggesting a series be given more time to mass a sufficient audience, perhaps we should suggest that a few comics be used as “loss leaders” or “gateway comics”. These would be given long runs in spite of their lack of profitability, on the understanding that they may attract new readers from “non-standard audiences”. Once in the door, hopefully these readers would eventually try some of the other comic titles and shore up the ever dwindling total customer base.

Though if memory serves, current top editorial seems to have a rather negative attitude toward that: “We don’t do R&D at Marvel…” and “…there comes a point where that title has to earn, usually sooner than later.” to quote Marvel’s Axel Alonso.

Valerio Schiti is great! he did a Ninja Turtles issue and Battle Beasts for IDW.

GREAT EPISODE. i loved the Catwoman discussion, Kelly ranting about the various problems and then silence from Sue. haha.

@Travis: Should be next week, I promise! I just want to make sure all the Kickstarter packages are out the door before I open up paperbacks and hardcovers for sale. I’ll email you when they go live, promise!

@Herring: Totally agree. Wish I’d brought that up on the cast. Too bad we don’t have a “call-in” feature! :)

@Ross: Haha. My favorite part was Sue and I arguing about Catwoman and then us realizing we both gave it 2 stars.
