The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 16
It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!
This week we feature another Avengers Arena cover, as Greg Horn homages the movie poster for the Hunger Games with his cover for Avengers Arena #3.

Sixteen weeks down! Will we make it to week seventeen? Find out!

Oh, so that’s what that was. I was thinking it was just a very generic cover image.

I have to agree with Bully, but that’s because the original image was quite generic as well.
Anyway is so direct that it looks like less an homage than a marketing move, it’s made to capture the attention of those casual readers who aren’t interested in a spin-off of the avengers but enjoyed “the hunger games”,
that and “Battle royale” which i think is also being homaged with the “Avengers Arena” logo at the top of the cover that is pretty similar to the one on the cover of the manga.
I love your columns Brian, thank you and keep up the good work!

Well, Avengers Arena necessarily has an end date on it, right? Unless Arcade just keeps pouring new characters into the mix forever.

The homage to Battle Royale is so direct that I expect royalties to be paid.

So that has a Battle Royale-style logo AND a Hunger Games-style logo? Wow, that’s really, really driving it home.

Why not call it “The Homage Avengers”?

Avengers:Rip Off
Then they can homage the logo for the Rip Off Comix company too….

Isn’t Marvel going to get in trouble for this? I mean, sure the covers are homages, but they’ve been using the Battle Royale styled logo as the official logo for this title for three issues now. Unless the original Battle Royale logo wasn’t copyrighted and/or trademarked.

It wouldn’t surprise me if somehow in their vast array of IPs, Disney/Marvel somehow owns Battle Royale and can “get away with” using a similar logo.
Because the MAN owns everything!

Looks like I was wrong again. I looked at the shelves on Friday and thought certain you were going to go with Spawn #226:

I thought about it, but I figure that if I can avoid it, I’m going to try to avoid artists homaging themselves (if I don’t see a better choice, then I still will use them, of course).
