The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 18
It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!
This week we feature Ian Snyder’s cover for Ursa Minor #4, homaging the film poster for the original Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Eighteen weeks down! Will we make it to week nineteen? Find out!

If this thing reaches a year, is that a cool thing that there’s so much material to homage, or just scary?

Not so much scary as kinda pathetic.

I don’t think homages are pathetic. Especially when they’re still a tiny fraction of the covers every week. There are roughly 80-100 covers out each week and there are often just 1 or 2 homage covers.

The original poster is by Matthew Peak, but for a moment I thought it was a Bill Sienkiewicz piece. Doesn’t it look like his art?
I also don’t think that it’s pathetic or scary that people do homage covers. Whether they’re true homage or in-jokes or evoking continuity, they are part of the comic world. When they’re well done, they’re great. And, as Brian says, they’re not the majority of covers so it’s not like the cover art is “eating itself”.

Totally! It was like doing a double take. I knew it wasn’t Sienkiewicz but at the same time I couldn’t help but think, “Maybe it somehow is!”

Other than “bear with red eyes” as a general theme, I don’t get a Sienkiewicz vibe off that AT ALL.

looking through the original poster i found that Johnny Depp was in the movie!
Probably his best role, i’m guessing.

I believe he was something like a pen salesman or something like that (pencil salesman? I forget which one) before that role, so I’m sure he definitely appreciates it!
