Cover Theme Game for 2/27

Every week you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, a trait all three creators share, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” “They’ve all been cloned (who HASN’T been cloned?)!” “They’re all mutants! (who ISN’T a mutant?)” “They’re all legacy heroes (who ISN’T a legacy hero nowadays?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers. The connections will ONLY have to do with connections in the actual comic books (so no incidental connections like “they share the same last names of Vice Presidents,” etc. Now, if the three characters were each named Gerald Ford, that’d be another story, as that’d no longer be incidental).

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything! Same thing with corner boxes!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!

Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.

Good luck and enjoy!

This one’s definitely gettable (one bit is SLIGHTLY tricky due to retcons)1

I assume that on the last one Batgirl and the Spinner are “floating heads”, right? I’ve got a vague idea but I think I’m probably off, too.

That I have even a vague idea is quite the step up for me, lately.

For clarification on the “floating heads” rule — for that Batman cover, Batman is not a character who is present for the purposes of the game, but Batgirl and The Spinner are, is that correct?

[I haven’t even come close to an answer, so I don’t know if it would matter that they would count or not, so this shouldn’t be considered any kind of tip-off.]

that’s weird, Travis’s comment wasn’t showing until I submitted mine…

It’s an interesting question, Sean and Travis. Yes, Batman doesn’t count, but honestly, just to be safe, I’ve been excluding characters on the sidebar, as well. I guess I’d accept it, though, if someone used them for a viable alternate theme! But keep in mind that when I’m coming up with the theme, I’m not looking at the sidebar characters.

I’m reasonably sure my guess was wrong anyway, but I’ll post what I was thinking next week once the right answer goes up. Since my answer involved sidebar people, I know it’s not what Brian’s going for.

I think I got it!

not certain what that 1 after retcons means..is it a typo or a reference to detailed rules somewhere?

I see a strong connection between covers 1 and 2 but can’t tie it to the 3rd (maybe I should investigate the Spinner to see if he fits…)
also see not-so-good connections between 3 and either 1 or 2 but not both…
(can’t mention any of the partial-connections in case they are relevant to the actual link)

The connective theme has since been retconned for one of the characters involved.

You miss my point
what I see is “This one’s definitely gettable (one bit is SLIGHTLY tricky due to retcons)1″

is the 1 a reference to something or a typo?

..Had a moment of inspiration and realised the strong connection fits all 3 (I think…)

Oh, yeah, then typo. I was most likely typing out 1 instead of one but then changed it to one without remembering to delete the 1.

The retcon thing actually gave me a clue to my answer (not that my answer is necessarily correct).

Yeah, the retcon clue is actually a pretty big one, but it’s one I would have felt bad about not giving in case someone actually was misled by the retcon.

Ah dammit, my guess was the right concept, I just didn’t realize what characters were what.

I thought that Babs might have been [what the answer was, redacted so as not to spoil anyone] at one point, before she was in Congress, but I saw you considered her a “floating head”.

Great theme, though.
