Cover Theme Game for 3/13

Every week you’ll get a brand-new comic cover theme game! The game works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a connection between all three characters, a locale, a creator, a trait all three creators share, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” “They’ve all been cloned (who HASN’T been cloned?)!” “They’re all mutants! (who ISN’T a mutant?)” “They’re all legacy heroes (who ISN’T a legacy hero nowadays?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers. The connections will ONLY have to do with connections in the actual comic books (so no incidental connections like “they share the same last names of Vice Presidents,” etc. Now, if the three characters were each named Gerald Ford, that’d be another story, as that’d no longer be incidental).

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything! Same thing with corner boxes!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly!

Here is an archive of all the past cover theme games, plus their answers. Before each new installment, I’ll post the answers to the previous week’s game.

Good luck and enjoy!

Reader Cully tells me that this is the 100th one of these that I’ve done at Comics Should Be Good. In honor of that, I’m going to re-use the first Cover Theme Game from 2005 (it wasn’t at CSBG)! If you were around back then, then you’ll recognize it. If not, well, here ya go! Either way you can answer the theme, even if you remember the answer from back in ’05!

HINTS: Since there are so many characters on the covers, I’ll eliminate one from each of the cover. On the first cover, Hal Jordan is not part of the theme. On the second, Tempest is not part of the theme. And on the third, Blue Beetle is not part of the theme.

Wow, 100 Cover Theme Games! And I’ve loved every damn one of them, even the ones I had no hope of guessing. Here’s to many more!

Oh god. You used DC covers. My (through admitted neglect) kryptonite! This is also one of my favorite features. Let’s keep it rolling!

That’s a lot of characters. I’m thinking there could be multiple possible themes here.

Very possibly!

My OCD kicked in to make me count the ones on the archive page, and I come up with this one being 95 (the 31 from Jan ’11, another in ’11, and the weekly ones from the start of ’12, which should be about right).

Still, this is like, the 90th time I’ve typed some variation on “I just don’t know!”

I just don’t know!!!

There was one entry in 2008 not on the archive that had five games in it.

But really, this would only be 100 as far as having their own entry just on Comics Should Be Good. They appeared elsewhere on CSBG for a year or two before they got their own feature and they appeared elsewhere before that.

That’s true, didn’t you do some as Snark Blockers?

But anyway, I’m perfectly fine in calling it 100. Yay!

Even though I rarely know ‘em, I do like this feature.

That’s a lot of characters. I’m thinking there could be multiple possible themes here.

In fact, since there are so many characters, I threw in some extra hints by eliminating one character from each cover.

Ah, so the theme is NOT characters who were killed off during a giant crossover. (Final Night, Infinite Crisis [Tempest died in that, didn't he?] and Infinite Crisis…again, I guess)

Man, had I thought of that BEFORE you eliminated them, I could have gotten a good guess in. Dang!

Congrats on the 100th game!

Most of the time I’m getting stuck and only once in a while get an answer. Yet, it’s one of my favorite features on CSBG.

Luckily, this time I got the answer (mostly thanks to Brian’s clue…)

I’m just trusting the count in the Categories listing to the right! Provided you’ve tagged all the entries correctly, this is the 100th.

D’oh! Yeah, forgot about that. At least one of those would be the archive, though. Then I see “Comic Theme Time” too, and wonder if that’s the same thing.

With Brian eliminating those three characters, I’ve identified A theme (no idea if it’s the right one or not).
