The Line it is Drawn #130 – Song Lyrics Starring Comic Book Characters

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Bill Reed, Greg Burgas, Sonia Harris, Melissa K. and Ken H.

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 9:00 AM Pacific on Friday).

The topic is…

It’s the great comic book amalgamation of 2013! Pick any two comic book characters and our artists will combine them into an, you know, amalgamation! Just like when DC and Marvel did it in the 1990s (Superman and Captain America became Super Soldier, etc.)

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of the Playlist comic book anthology that Phil Sevy is working on (that you can help get made by funding it here), the idea is to name a comic character (or characters) and a song lyric that you’d like to see our artists interpret as a drawing featuring said character(s).

I waited until Phil’s project was funded to post this. It is now funded! You did it, folks! Yay!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Great stuff, everyone!

Okay, now you all go tweet us your suggestions for next week!

Bill Walko is my favorite this week, closely followed by Axel Medellin. Great Work :)

While these are all great, I’m gonna go cry cause none of mine were picked.

Or something.

Oh, wonderful stuff here. Dirty Deeds was funny, Walko’s piece great and I like the twist on “shadows of the night”. And the last piece by Perks…
But yeah, great round, everyone.

music saves your soul

These are great.

Just one quibble — it would be polite to say who wrote the songs.

And who’s best known for performing them, too.

@David – Good point – not just polite but interesting too.
@Brian – I’m sure *someone* suggested the Luthor idea – but it wasn’t me. And I can’t find the tweet. Mystery!

Great pieces. Sean McFarland wins by getting a little something in my eye.

Marco D’Alfonso-subtle humor. I love it.

…and I really love Zatanna’s costume but that thong has GOT to hurt!

I don’t know what prompted your asides about Amanda Rodgers other than her obvious talent, but they are as much fun as the pieces!

Another great week, my favorite is Dirty Deeds… I’d second the request for the artists/bands responsible for the lyrics…

Also, hate to be that guy but Merle and Daryl are not comic book characters… right? OH I just remembered I haven’t read the Walking Dead since number 103-something… is that a spoiler? :-/ damn! gotta catch up on my reading.

Great week and thanks to all artists!

Just out of curiosity, when was this posted? The last couple of weeks, I haven’t had a chance to see these until Friday morning, a few minutes before the next week’s suggestions are due.

Just out of curiosity, when was this posted?

Late last night.

There’s still a half hour until the suggestion deadline (and honestly, I typically accept suggestions made soon after the deadline, as well).

This was a tough topic… but once again, the TLIID contributors made it happen!

Love all of these, but I too would’ve liked to have seen who contributed what songs (though Thea and Amanda’s red balloon was a nice giveaway to the song lyric).

Brilliant pictures. Made my day alright.

Walko, Medellin, Sevy, and D’Alfonso take the cake for me.

Good work, guys. Though for some reason certain font choices are bugging me this week… yeah, I’m the kind of dweeb who has issues about font use. I used to be a bit obsessed with it. I’d probably make an annoying art director.

I like that there are stories you can infer from certain images. Like the Jonah Hex one… dead guy’s a card cheat. Emma Frost, too… more like easter eggs in that case, but quite fun. Is the “Think about baseball” line a reference to the baseball games frequently played by Claremont’s X-Men? Death and the ruined city, so moody and evocative. I think that Death looks pissed off. She knows more than anyone that death is just part of a greater cycle. But she still thinks this was a waste. She’s starting to see Destruction’s point of view! Okay, now I’m making fan fiction here! I don’t know what’s come over me.

Oz: “Think about baseball” is a common (at least in North America) suggestion for guys so that they last longer in bed. The idea being that it’s something not sexual, and involving a lot of dry statistics, that keeps you from getting too excited too soon. I think that’s the intent, rather than a reference to actual Baseball games.

Wow, Amanda Rodgers has her own tag now!

Good stuff, even when I can’t place the song immediately.

Bill’s is amazing. I want a print of that.

Man, the “think about baseball” comment got Warrant in my head (from “Cherry Pie” “think about baseball I’ll swing all night yeah yeah yeah!” Oh, I hate my own brain!).

I like Hoax Hunters for other reasons, but Axel’s depictions of boobs and butts, like here, certainly helps.

Hoax Hunters: All that and Boobs and Butts.

They can use that as a tag line if they want. Proper credit, though, please.

Someone referenced They Might Be Giants. I am content.

No wonder I didn’t recognize the picture featuring Death. The lyrics are from the shoddy, crappy English version of Nena’s “99 Luftballons.”

The original German lyrics actually work better for the image,
“Heute zieh’ ich meine Runden
Seh’ die Welt in Trümmern liegen
Hab’ ‘nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk’ an dich und lass’ ihn fliegen”

(Translation:
“Today I’m making my rounds
see the world lying in ruins.
I found a balloon,
think of you and let it fly [away].”)

DIRTY DEEDS is awsome no wait for it AWSOME

Alas, Xum, I share your pain over the end of Green Lantern Animated…

Sean McFarlan’s place–he’s running with his sisters!
