The Greatest Gail Simone Stories Ever Told! – Voting

Here’s the latest of the daily voting threads for The Greatest ____ Stories Ever Told!

Today we have Gail Simone!

Gail Simone has done some notable work for both Marvel AND DC (not to mention her work for Bongo Comics), doing acclaimed work on Deadpool, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, Secret Six and her latest series, Batgirl.

You have until 11:59 PM Pacific time, April 13th to vote for your top ten favorite comic book stories written or co-written by Gail Simone! Your choices will be revealed on April 14th.

You vote by sending your top ten choices to bcronin@comicbookresources.com (make the subject heading clear that it is about The Greatest Gail Simone Stories Ever Told Voting) by that time (you send your votes by e-mail, not in the comments to this piece). If you legitimately don’t think you can think of ten stories, I’ll still allow the ballot if you can think of at least six stories.

Be sure to first click here to read about the rules and guidelines for the voting (so you don’t vote for stuff that is ineligible, like you can’t vote for “Gail Simone’s Secret Six,” you have to pick a specific story or story arc).

I’d prefer you not share your votes in the comments section – please let’s keep it a surprise until the results go up. You can share your votes then if you’d like! In addition, as a general rule for all of these polls, don’t be a jerk about the creator in question in the comments. If you don’t like the creator, fair enough, don’t vote. No snarky comments about the creator. I’ll be deleting comments like that.

Have fun voting and be sure to check back April 14th to see the results!

Will BeccaBlast not call me a drillrod if I just vote for various Secret Six stories? Just put me down for whatever Becca says, man!

I know it wouldn’t count, but I think she did a pretty funny Cerebus parody column in YABS at the mothership.

No snarky comments about the creator. I’ll be deleting comments like that.

If you’re going to do a topic on Gail Simone and no one is allowed to make critical comments then you might as well just close the comments section on this one.

What’s next? Rob Liefeld and Bomb Queen (w/ criticisms of course)?

Or people could just…y’know…NOT COMMENT?

I say this as someone OCD about commenting about nearly everything on this blog, and I certainly have said snarky stuff, but it’s easier to not type something than type it.

w/ criticisms

Shit. I obviously mean “w/o criticisms”

Or people could just…y’know…NOT COMMENT?

I imagine that exactly what most people will do (or not do in this case), but it’s not realistic to think that every comment will be positive (or even that most of them will be). There are certain people in the comics industry that CAN NOT be brought up on any forum without causing a shitstorm (see: Frank Miller, any of the early 90s Image guys, Dave Sims). Gail Simone is one of them. Even Bendis is more respected these days.

Keep in mind that this is NOT my “opinion”. I’m actually pretty neutral on Simone. I’m just stating a fact that general consensus on her work is not exactly very positive, to say the least.

That said, I expect this to be a Top 10 Birds of Prey Stories With Special Appearance By Secret Six.

I guess I must see different “general consensus”, as most of the stuff I see about Gail Simone is that she and her work are beloved by people (particularly women people), and the shitstorm I saw most recently re:Gail Simone was people getting pissed off that she was fired off Batgirl via email. And then reinstated very quickly. I doubt that DC would have done that about face that quickly if Simone was that unliked.

And apparently we’re the grownups on the internet here at CSBG, because most of the comments here are fairly mild and respectful regardless of what “controversial” names come up.

I of course do NOT include myself in the “grownups” part… ;)

I won’t go into what exactly I think will make this top 10, but I respectfully disagree that it will be BoP with some other stuff.

I just reread Secret Six a week ago. Fun stuff. I’m not sure I own any complete runs of anything else, so it will be tough to vote for much else. Not terribly in love with her latest DC output, but it will make nice filler at the bottom of my list.

In Simone’s case, are most of the criticisms more about her politics or her work? I used to be addicted to her CBR and Benbo forums because of OMG, the DRAMA! She also used to have one of the more fun twitter feeds until I broke myself of that giant time suck.

Secret Six – The Get Out of Hell Free/Junior storyline

In Simone’s case, are most of the criticisms more about her politics or her work?

There are far more comics fans that agree with her political views than disagree. The criticisms are (9 out of 10 times at least) about the quality of her work. She’s one of those people — like Bendis to give another example — whose name on the cover is enough to get a lot of people to not buy a book.

I’ll add though that the general consensus seems to be that — also like Bendis — she used to be a great writer and that at some point her work quality went downhill. Consequently I expect that the top 10 will be heavily slanted toward her older work.

I’d say Simone is more polarizing than controversial which is just slightly different. Anyway, it is possible to have a conversation about a creator (post about them) without making snarky comments. Criticism isn’t the same as bashing, spouting ill informed notions, or taking pot-shots.
For example, Roger Ebert was a film critic, the ‘person on the street’ who hated “Citizen Kane” because it is black & white is just an idiot.

*insert obnoxious/idiotic/trolling/useless comment about internet comments here*

For example, Roger Ebert was a film critic, the ‘person on the street’ who hated “Citizen Kane” because it is black & white is just an idiot.

This is a horrible analogy.

Yes TB, your right.
…Its an incomplete thought, I was typing thinking faster then I could type. lol.
So, for clarity, it should look something like this:
Film Critic Roger Ebert says, “`Citizen Kane” is more than a great movie; it is a gathering of all the lessons of the emerging era of sound.” (actual quote)
The [below] average ‘person on the street’ might say ” ‘Citizen Kane” sucked because it is black & white.”

thinking faster than I could type.
… maybe I should just take the day off from commenting…

Same analogy.

But whatever.

I’m not familiar with Ms. Simone’s politics (and have no desire to become better informed – I try to avoid mixing the opinions of artists with their art, because it can get in the way of whether I like the art, and honestly I get enough politics in other places).

I did like BoP, though, and VU/Secret Six was fun. Some other stuff less so, but nobody’s perfect.

I mostly know her for her Deadpool stuff, which I loved.
