You Decide: Do Think It is a Good Idea to Add Carrie Kelly to the “Regular” DC Universe?

DC made major news last week when they revealed that Carrie Kelly, from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns, was making her “regular” DC Universe debut in Batman and Red Robin #19.

Do you think that it is a good idea to add Kelly to the DC Universe?

No. It’s a cheap and evident stunt. So I’m not surprised that DC did it.

Unnecessary, and done for cheap shock effect.

That doesn’t mean something good CAN’T come out from it eventually. It just isn’t very likely.

I don’t think it matters. The name is just to capitalize on the release of the DVDs. If it moves books then great. If it doesn’t then oh well. People have to understand DC is in the business of making money and I’d a character can pull in even 100 readers then job well done. Just enjoy it for the story folks and stop worrying about where she came from.

Depends, are you one of the people who argues that comics as an industry largely survives by strip mining the genius of a few inspired creators and exploiting the fact that many fans of those same creators are credulous fan boys willing to spend real money chasing ephemeral scraps of ideas left behind by those creators?

Cause I’m not, actually. But then again, I’m not somebody who spent real money on ‘Beyond Watchmen’ or whatever it was.

But that’s my visceral, knee jerk, cynical reaction. I have also seen some really good writers get a lot of very worth-reading-stories out of stuff that Stan and Jack created, and seen Stan and Jack admit they would never have gotten anything that good out of it if they were left to it themselves. Some stuff that even competed with the best of the stuff that they wrote.

So, I guess, I don’t have an opinion, it really comes down to the end product itself. Which I hope is the answer everybody was trying for.

I get to let my cynical self get in the last word with ‘kind of a shit poll, really, given that context of nuance.’ But then again, my cynical self is kind of a ****.

Also probably what the hell does ‘context of nuance’ mean anyway?

What is even going on at DC? This is just downright stupid.

I think the last thing they need is more Robins or Batgirls! It’s getting almost to X-Men proportions.

It’s all right, Ganky. Sometimes DC decides for you that some of them never existed at all.

Could it be done well? Mmmmmmmaybe. Carrie Kelly is a fun, likeable character who manages to be capable at her job, and adds a girl Robin who might stick around for awhile.

Will it be done well? Nah, probably not. DC seems to hate characters who are fun, so they’ll probably make her angsty or tortured or something and kill all the little things that made people like her in the first place.

I hope to god she’s a time traveler alternate dimension Carrie Kelly. Let’s just make this as confusing as possible.

P. Boz-

She would pretty much have to be at least one of those at this point, right? I’m actually a bit disappointed there isn’t a chance of making her a Skrull.

Just enjoy it for the story folks and stop worrying about where she came from.

Well I assume that’s part of what the poll is asking. Whether it will lead to enjoyable stories. I don’t think this is solely about worrying where she came from. I think the most important question is, will doing this lead to enjoyable stories. If it doesn’t, which given DC’s track record I’m pretty sure it won’t, then just telling people to enjoy it for the story isn’t a useful suggestion.

I’ll give a damn when they clean up the mess of Robins they already have.

That’s not the regular universe. The regular universe is probably just waiting for a megaevent to show up back again. That said, I like it that the pocket universe of the New 52 has included the character I was in love with as a teenager. I like it even more that she’s of legal age now.

Yeah, I don’t really care what they do with the New 52 anymore. I’m not the least bit interested in the current “regular DC universe.”

It was cute when she showed up in an issue of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, though.

Depends what they do with her, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Pure gimmickry.

Until the current brain trust leaves, I don’t even think Superman and Batman should have been added to the new 52.

Does she talk the same way?
