The Line it is Drawn #142 – It’s Adventure Time!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Bill Reed, Greg Burgas, Sonia Harris, Melissa K. and Ken H.

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 2pm Pacific Friday).

The topic is…

In honor of next week’s opening of The Man of Steel, let’s do something basic. Team-ups of Superman and another comic book character.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of my pal (and blog co-founder) Alex Cox’s story in this week’s Adventure Time Annual, team-up or mash-up comic book characters with characters from Adventure Time!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Great work, everyone! Welcome back, Steve and Happy Birthday, Xum!

Now you folks all go tweet us suggestions for next week!

Everything is great (love Nelson’s Jake-Thor and Thea’s concept especially), but Marco’s cover is the top of the tippy-top. Kudos to all!

So… beautiful. Avenger Time is my favorite.

But I must say that the Zero Hour one is the most impressive.
I’m just speechless.
I mean… how it is even possible? really, how? really?
Photoshop? Magic?

Actually, completely acceptable and awesome. The Venture Bros one is a particular favorite.

I just don’t get the appeal of Adventure Time…..

U2! Hell yeah!

Fine, I’ll start watching Adventure Time…

I have never even glimpsed Adventure Time, but these are pure awesome.

All I can do, this week, is admire the pretty pictures. I know absolutely nothing about Adventure Time.

Seriously great this week. I’ve seen just enough Adventure Time to get these.

Nick: Supergirl/ Susan Strong’s dream was quite moving. It took me a minute to translate “you script on night;’ nice touch! I’ve seen at least one Susan Strong episode; does she have a dream of pre-disaster Earth that you based yours on?

Nelson: I appreciated both the way your picture looks like it came out of an older book and 8-legged Jake!

Thea, Sean, Axel, & Robert: very funny!

Paul, Chaz, & Xum: good job blending the disparate properties!

Steve: I love Cap’s dazed expression.

Brendan: Adventure Time Galactus is hilariously terrifying!

Marco: Perfect! In an excellent week, you stole the show!

These are AMAZING (as is Adventure Time)

The “IT’S THE GODDAMN ADVENTURE TIME” will have me chuckling all day!

@Mike Loughlin – Nope, Susan Strong has no dreams that I know of. If I based it on anything it was Lois Lane #92 http://spinnerrackmemories.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/superman-215-and-supermans-girlfriend.html

WOW!! So many great covers. An Adventure Time/Marvel crossover would be cool :D

No Deadpool? Must be the first one of these in weeks that didn’t have him.
Still a good crop of art though :)

As the resident “Adventure Time” fanatic on here (besides Kelly, apparently, which makes her even cooler in my book), I was so looking forward to this week. It did not disappoint.

There’s so many great little touches in here: Dr. Orpheus mixed with Abra-Ca-Daniel, Death and Marceline combining two of my more awkward fictional crushes (what is it about goth girls?), Finn-Man’s “Phil Face” buckle, and poor Jake just cannot stop finding those goddamn baby socks!

Also, to Matt and josh (and anyone else who just cannot get into AT), I’ve had a few friends who had that problem initially. It’s actually understandable. If you just watch an episode or two (especially the early ones), it can come off as just a goofy kids show, like a “Spongebob Squarepants” type of thing. The reason why so many people are obsessed with it (myself included) is kind of a combo of two things…

1. The humor style, which is deeper than it looks on the surface. Of course, opinions are going to vary, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not some pretentious “you just don’t GET IT” thing, it’s just a matter of different people’s taste.
2. The surprisingly mature and developed storyline and interpersonal relationships between the characters. The show is set on Earth after the bombs drop, which is pretty heavy for a “kid’s show”, and allows for all kinds of cool story points that go over a lot of kids’ heads, but are picked up by the teens and adults who watch. And for examples of just how deep the characterization can get, check out the episode “What Was Missing”, or either of the episodes that reveal the relationship of the Ice King and Marceline (“I Remember You” followed by “Simon and Marcie”). There’s a particular scene in “I Remember You” (the scene where Marceline sings Simon’s poetry as lyrics, for those who are fans) that is more mature, heartbreaking, and emotionally nuanced than most scenes on the average adult TV drama.

I personally prefer the Ice King as weirdo villain rather than tragic figure. The Simon and Marcie episodes resulted in nothing but eye-rolling from me.

As for the art, though, you guys really captured the wacky abandon that really makes the show shine. Good job!

I actually thought they did a pretty good job of keeping the Ice King who he was. Even while Marceline is breaking down crying in front of him, he still exhibits this sociopathic, Joker-like lunacy. Though they are technically the same person, to me Simon Petrikov is a tragic figure, while the Ice King is not. Though, obviously, mileage may vary on the way different people see the show.

Wonderful stuff guys and gals – I don’t want to single anyone out because it’s all killer with no filler!

I love Adventure Time for all the reasons stated above, and was not disappointed by the results. Gotta love the Venture Bros mashup… Its nowhere near the strangest thing to happen on either show :D
