The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 38

It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!

This week, we’ll go with Brett Booth and Norm Rapmond’s cover for Nightwing #21, which homages John Byrne and Terry Austin’s cover for X-Men #141 and Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s reveal of Carrie Kelley as Robin in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

Thirty-eight weeks down! Will we make it to week thirty-nine?

I was sure Guardians of the Galaxy #3 would get the nod this week.

I know this wouldn’t be eligible, but this new Avengers Alliance teaser image puts that Nightwing cover to shame in homaging the same cover.

I mean, it’s got the Armless Tiger Man! The sensational character find of 1941!

I would also like to point out that Nightwing’s pose is the same as Kitty Pryde’s from the cover to Uncanny X-Men #168…

I would bet money that it was an homage to this other Byrne image instead:

Ooo, good call, Pedro. I think we have a winner.

When does this issue come out? I’m sort of a collector of Uncanny X-Men 141 homage covers.

It came out on the 12th.

Ooof, I’ll have to see if Hastings still has a copy! Thanks! Wasn’t sure if these homage covers were of the upcoming week or the current week.

Also homages Dark knight returns (the poster i n the back)?

Ooh, that’s right. So this is just an homage fruit salad, huh?

I’ve often wondered, at what point does “homage” become “swipe?”

I think a homage relies on a significant number of people being able to recognise the origin of an image, whereas a swipe is someone thinking they can get away with theft.
