The Line it is Drawn #145 – How Do Superheroes Spend Their Summer Vacation?

line6-28-display

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Bill Reed, Greg Burgas, Sonia Harris, Melissa K. and Ken H.

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 1pm Pacific Friday).

The topic is…

In honor of the late Kim Thompson, the theme this week will be cover homages to Amazing Heroes (whihc Thompson edited for over a decade). Pick comic book characters and pick an Amazing Heroes cover (all you need to do is give the issue number) and our artists will draw a cover homage of that issue with those characters. It’d be nice if you suggested some Fantagraphics characters, but any character you’d like to suggest is fine! Here is a cover gallery of Amazing Heroes covers.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

It’s summer time, so tell us how various comic book characters are spending their summer vacation! On the beach, on a trip, you decide!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Great ones this week. Lots of cute gags in Axel’s piece. Loved the “Arthur Gordon Pym” reference, Nick. And Chaz, how could you do that to Oscar?

Whoa, I got three in from me this week. And they are all pretty great. Someone really needs to do a Mr. Miracle escapes from the Village comic. But the best one is that so, SOOOO awesome Roman Holiday mock up. Adding Orion is even better!

Epic week, folks. Apparently Prof. Xum’s daughter is no me, though. :)

I’d buy a print of that X-Men one. Great job, all.

Shouldn’t Mr. Miracle have signed his postcard, “Be seeing you”?

Axel’s piece (I’m assuming) is a mockery of the insane and impossible poses and physiques of the Marvel Swimsuit issue from the 90s.

Love that Chaz piece!

OMG, one of the best weeks EVER. This actually reminds me of those old AMAZING HEROES Swimsuit Specials…

Dirty dirty Lockheed

The amazing attention to detail with the water-skiing CORDS (GL constructs except Batman’s cable, Mera’s water construct, WW’s lasso, and Superman’s levitation) is knocked that one out of the park.

Also the skis themselves (or lack thereof).

A+ for Nick Perks tossing in an Elder Thing. Ia Ia!

wow, so the week already passed? didn’t notice.
Again, I am in awe of your talent folks.

poor Jubilee

What about Paolo Rivera’s gorgeous piece of FF on the beach :)

Nice point Pack. But “Wish You Were Here”, “Be Seeing You.” Six of one, half dozen of the other.

I’m really hoping next week they ask for a tribute to Richard Matheson (I actually e-mailed Brian for a Kim Thompson themed one, so that’s cool). Just rewatched Duel. It’s amazing.

why is black canary holding a pride flag?

I might have had this theme on my mind when when I draw this a month or so ago. Even on Vacation Tony Stark is always working.

Ha, poor Jubilee. Shoulda used that sunblock. These are great

Love them all! So great. My love for the FF means I’m inclined towards that last one. Reed stretching out and putting on sun screen, Val reading a book, and Namor muttering Imperious Rex out in the water. Good work all around!

Now all of these are funny! That Paul Hostetler piece looks like something out of The New Yorker. Also, this week’s round of entires made me think of this:

uh, is Robin giving a reach around to Kid flash?

“uh, is Robin giving a reach around to Kid flash?”

no.

why is black canary holding a pride flag?

She is happy about the Supreme Court rulings this week!

The JL on water skis pic reminds me of going to Sea World in Aurora, OH as a kid in the late 70s and seeing the Super Friends Water Ski show. I got picked from the crowd to take a ride in the Bat-boat during the show, but was too scared to get in :(

@Mark, so true, those 90′s swimsuit specials scarred many of us for life…

One of the most consistently beautifully illustrated TLIID columns ever. Great work everyone. That being said, I have to give top honors to “V for Vacation” for making me laugh loudest and to “Surfer Batman” because, well, it’s Adam West, surfing with Bat Shark Repellant!

As always, the little touches make this week, like the “Watchmen Babies” reference.

IMPERIOUS REX!

Screw “Before Watchmen”. “Watchmen Babies” gets all my money. Also, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that exact raccoon hanging around my apartment’s dumpster…

@Axel Those poses are perfect.

Shouldn’t Mr. Miracle have signed his postcard, “Be seeing you”?

I am now kicking myself for not having thought of that. Thanks, Pack. :P

Love the Sea World one (of course)! Got permission to repost it on my blog, where I ran a large oral history of that show.

Squashua, good observations!

kneelB4zod, here’s that Batboat you missed your chance for!: http://noblemania.blogspot.com/2011/09/super-70s-and-80s-sea-world-superheroes_07.html

Great drawing Manuel… but why is Trevor smiling down from heaven?

All were great. I’m not that happy about Oscar, the Grouch’s situation on Chaz’s, but I won’t make a big deal about it. Nick’s however, as is very often the case with this feature, took my idea and made it so much cooler than what I originally imagined. It’s great to be a part of this. Thanks guys!

Love that roman holiday one!!!
