Month of Cool Avengers/X-Men Comic Book Moments – The Long-Awaited Return of the Fastball Special

All month long we will feature brand-new Cool Avengers and X-Men Comic Book Moments in celebration of their fiftieth anniversaries this month. Here is an archive of all the past cool comic moments that I’ve featured so far over the years.

Today we look at the return of the fastball special, courtesy of Joss Whedon, John Cassaday and Astonishing X-Men #6…

Okay, so the gist of the story is that Colossus is both alive and being held captive by a seemingly evil alien named Mork (or something like that). Mork escapes along with a young mutant as a hostage and it looks like he’s going to get away.

Not so fast, buddy!

One of the top moments of the first story arc on Astonishing X-Men. John Cassaday really shined on that two-page spread.

It’s so damn awesome, you don’t even have to say the words.

Great moment, great arc.

Great moment.

I may need to get out my Astonishing X-Men issues and re-read them. I’ve convinced myself that the series is overrated because of Whedon love (though I do like Whedon’s stuff), but I may need to give it another chance.

Cassaday really is one of the greats. I hope we get to see a lot more comic work from him yet.

That was really cool. I forgot how great Cassaday’s art could be when he’s “on.”

The Fastball Special would never have been the same without Colossus.

Whedon and Cassaday did an splendid job with the Claremont/Byrne legacy during their run.

I miss the old Nick Fury…

I liked this story, but that Nick Fury joke sounds so little like Nick Fury and so much like every Warren Ellis character ever that I had to go back and double-check the credits.

As great as that is, there are two moments from that run that are ever better.

One is Cyclops’s smirk before another two-page spread.

The other is the Popeye music that plays when Wolverine sees a can of beer.

love how it did took wolverine only to ask if collusus was ready and boom the fast ball special for it really works well when its those two doing it.

I loved that they did a fastball special in the recent Deadpool issue
