The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 60

It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!

This week we’ll go with Sebastian Cichon’s cover for Pathfinder #11, which is homaging the album cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind.

Sixty weeks down! Will we make it to week sixty-one?

Nirvana, of course. Missed the last “na” there.

While I’m being annoyingly pedantic, I’m disappointed that this one doesn’t homage the original a … little more, and show us goblin wang. But that is pretty sweet.

I also liked last week’s Rogues 5, homaging both the Justice League #1 (Giff/DeMatteis era) as well as other ’80s barbarian types.

Let the record show that Travis Pelkie wanted to see goblin wang. (Which, in itself, would be a pretty good name for a band.)

I for one find all these homages somewhat depressing. While those covers that homage stuff outside comics are not quite as bad as the insular ones, they all point to a dearth of creativity. The fact that comic cover homages are themselves so common makes it twice as bad. I’m looking forward to the week when this streak ends, but I’m not holding my breath.

You know what the second cave painting looked like? Almost exactly like the first cave painting. A guy chasing an auroch. Homages aren’t going anywhere.

The third cave painting, though, looked an awful lot like Amazing Spider-Man #50.

The third cave painting, though, looked an awful lot like Amazing Spider-Man #50.

Which itself was an homage of Wonder Man #18.

This thread really makes me wish we could up-vote comments.

It would be interesting to see if this could be done without using alternate covers.

Why was my comment deleted? There was no snark or assholier, just a simple comment.

Huh? Your comment wasn’t deleted. It’s right there.

My apoligies. I was not seeing it

I’d be interested if this could be done without alternate covers, too. Especially since at this point it seems pretty clear that every week there will be at least one alternate cover that homages something. I bet it’d still be a pretty long streak just using primary covers.

Ha. Thanks, Brian – for forcing me to google Wonder Man #18 in order to get the joke.

I’m surprised you didn’t say this was homaging Weird Al’s “Off the Deep End” album cover.

Let’s not forget the wonderful cave paintings in Java Man #18.

There are people who DON’T want to see goblin wang? Wha?

An excellent homage of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s ‘Off the Deep End’ album.

Michael P, you are aware of the actual band Goblin Cock?
