The Line it is Drawn #174 – Gender-Swapped Comic Book Characters!

Welcome to our weekly gallery of amazing art by our great collection of artistic talent, all working from YOUR suggestions!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Bill Reed, Greg Burgas, Sonia Harris, Melissa K. and Ken H.

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the choices picked from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 3pm Pacific Friday).

The topic is…

Courtesy of a suggestion from our own Daniel Cox, mash-up and/or team-up comic book characters with Hanna-Barbera characters! Here is a list of Hanna-Barbera characters if you’re unfamiliar which cartoons they did.

Read on for the sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of Matt Fraction’s upcoming gender-swapped take on the Odyssey, switch the genders on a comic book character! Hellgirl, Alan and Markie, Scotia Pilgrim, etc.!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Awesome work, everyone! And holy crap that was a lot of artwork Awesome!

Okay, folks, go make suggestions for Hanna-Barbera week!

These are great this week. Especially fond of Robo and Starwoman, and the Big Bardo and Miss Miracle is just wonderful.

Just want to say Nurse Strange sounds like a porn name

Hellgirl represents a unrealistic body type for women. Being red, having a tail and having the Right Hand of Doom is totally unattainable.

Pretty sure a female doctor…is still a doctor, no?

…I would so read the adventures of Kate Allard AKA Laine Cranston AKA The Shadow.

Punisher, Conan/Sonja, and JLA top the list this week.

But I do dig the Shadow as well.

Good work gals and guys!

That female Darkseid needs to show up in the comics for real somehow.

Xum’s work is always so cool! I always look forward to his work

No Thea this week Brian? She’s my other must look for art of the week

oh, the Miss Miracle image was delightful.

One of the best “Line” compilations ever!

Nick Perks always impresses me.

And Marc’s Punisher is amazing! I love the pop art feel to it, truly incredible piece.

Will the thrill

In the first issue of vibe new 52 they have darksied’s daughter locked up. so that pic might show up

This week is all about Doop for me.

The others were great, as well.

I like the Darkseid one.

Glad that Paul Hostetler renamed his male Lois from the suggested Lloyd to Louis.

We’ve seen gender-swapped variants of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Power Girl (or at least Supergirl) in the Elseworld or pre-Crisis comics… has any of these others actually appeared as well? I know there have been lady Punishers and a female counterpart of Doop showed up in Milligan’s X-Men run.

Yayyyy, I got one my suggestions used this week! And it is AWESOME. Thanks for the amazing Sonan/Conja, Axel!

Xum knocked the Power Guy/Hunter one out of the park, too. And I love Nick’s Shadow, and Robert’s Flashley Gordon (especially Dale), and Marco’s Punisher, and Steve’s Invincibelle, and…. well, great stuff all ’round, y’all.

Brendan Tobin drew a perfect Doop.

Woohoo, I got one my suggestions used this week! And it is AWESOME. Thanks for the amazing Sonan/Conja, Axel!

Matty – I agree that Louis is so much better. I picked the only male L name I could think of. Why didn’t I think of Louis? But that is why they are the professionals and we are the fans.

My favorite week in a while, but I am really looking forward to next week’s Hanna Barbara!
By Crom! Female Conan does not look happy.

Betty Doop. That is all.

A million points each for Nick Perks and Brendan Tobin adding a little extra comedy/commentary to the mix.

Also, while the Big Bardo/Miss Miracle illustration by Derek Langille is excellent, I don’t know that the suggestion is actually that interesting…it’s one of the few cases where the existing couple is actually already kind of gender swapped by traditional standards…so this just makes it seem…normal?

Fantastic work everybody! :-D

I’m all about the Hannah Barbara cartoons. Bring it on, people! And if I don’t see a laugh o lympics suggestion, I’m going to be very surprised.

Great week fellas! I’m really sorry I missed it. Nice to be missed, though! Thanks Paul.

Personal fav for the week: Marco, NICE WORK, love the pink punisher logo, awesome. That’s some serious monthly karma that lady is passing out every 28 days. Lol

See u next week!

Power Guy’s junk oughta be WAAAAAAAAAY bigger!!

Hellgirl is awesome and would probably work!

I cannot be the only one who’s getting Carmen Sandiego vibes from The Shadow…..

She-Doop is the greatest thing ever!

Another fantastic week.

And that’s not just because my suggestion got picked!

I love the direction Steve took my suggestion – especially the name Invincibelle, which totally fits Robert Kirkman’s universe, where half the super-heroes have pun-names (geddit?).

I enjoy the storytelling that went into a lot of these. The artists really thought about the world and gave more than just an illustration and that’s just awesome.

Oh come on, no comment love for the Cerebus page? That’s some pretty awesome work; Dave even cited his sources!

I’m sure most of cbr’s readers are fluent in Doopspeak already (or at least have one of those bookmark letter keys lying around), but to save people some time, Doop is saying:

“Same old Doop… All new all different parts… I think…”

Best ones are Hellgirl, Dr Dame (the Disney villainesses are a NICE touch!), Princess Valiant (Sir Aleeta would have been a good one, too!), Axe Cop, the Punisher, Flashley Gordon and the Shadow.

Jabber Jaw and Aquaman
Smurfs and Ant Man
Speedbuggy and Transformers

Miss Miracle is adorable.

I’m trying to figure out the “important clue” on Xum Yukinori’s Justice League cover. I know it must be that message on the screen: “Incoming message from Kaym Son-M and E-Wahra Lahm Rohn,” but I just can’t seem to decipher the significance of those names.

Great job on all! And big thanks for saving me some work jb

Or SB. Lol i only had to get letters right

Erich, you are definitely on the right path. Now think about which character may have read those names out loud…

I’m glad someone took the time to decipher it, thanks SB.

Also, if you’re wondering, the two X’s on her bod aren’t boobies, why does Lady Doop have them?

–B

It’s all in the chromosomes, isn’t ir, Brendan?

If Doop had a nose, I’d say you we’re on it, Xum.

I know Zatanna read the names backwards, but I still can’t decipher it! Help me, Xum!

And this was a great week overall. Nice job, everyone.

Travis,

“Kaym Son-M” or “kaym sun em” phonetically sounds like “ekam su nem”.

“E-Wahra Lahm Rohn” or “ee-wah-rah lahm rohn” phonetically sounds like “ew era lamron”.

And that’s why Zatannio’s spells wouldn’t work, because they were focused on changing them “back” as in “back to normal,” not realizing that she-now-he had reset what “normal” was.

It would take about 12 pages of an adventure on Rigel IV with our now-male heroes (wonderfully drawn in Dick Dillin style, BTW) before Zatannio realizes this, and then utters a spell to simply change the quartet into women. Which works just fine…

Until Kaym-Son-M’s wife Neh-ruht Oot nih C-Bayb shows up…

I think Dick Dillin would indeed be the best artist for this, by virtue of his name only.

See, I think what threw me is that I assume when “make” is spelled backwards, you’d pronounce the “E” first. I suppose in thinking about it, that doesn’t necessarily make sense.

And now I’m still not getting your new backwards one…

I’m dumb. I know.

Turn in to babes?

“Turn into babies.” You are getting it…

Ah. Duh. Of course.

Thanks for taking the time to walk me through it, and to “spell” it all out for me.

HAHAHAHA! See what I did there?!
