The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 70

It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!

This week we’ll go with Brendan McCarthy’s cover for Judge Dredd #15, which is homaging Jim Steranko’s cover for Captain America #110

Seventy weeks down! Will we make it to week seventy-one?

Man, this is head, shoulders, torso and thighs above that last McCarthy Dredd homage cover you featured. I can see why so many people were saying that we shouldn’t judge him as an artist by how lousy that one cover was. (Not that I was inclined to judge him by that one piece, but still.)

Next month’s Dredd cover is another classic homage by McCarthy, too.

And I liked last month’s. But I’ve been a fan of McCarthy for a while now, so maybe I’m just more used to his style.

I’m really starting to hate all these supposed homages. To me, 99% of them smack of laziness. This guy is doing 3 in a row? Am I understanding that correctly? What a waste of time. This latest one is a worthless piece of garbage. It sullies the innovation of Steranko (even with the Kirby riffs). This is indicative of a dearth of ideas and little else. This “homage” is not clever or witty or worth my time. I am earnestly hoping for an end to this streak, but I am not holding my breath. And McCarthy is unworthy of holding Steranko’s cape.

Not many can pull off wearing a cape all the time like Steranko can.

Well, Steranko is a magician…

mrclam – if you think the artists is lacking in ideas then you don’t know Brendan McCarthy. He’s one of the most imaginative artists in the business.

Calm clam*

Like DanCJ said, Mcarthy’s one of “the good ones”. He’s a very capable artist, though I agree the one last week seemed lacking.

The homage thing seems to be out of hand, but in this case I don’t think it’s a reflection on Mcarthy’s imagination or skills.

*see what I did there? – comedy Gold!

@Dan and Lou

I’ll take your word for it. I based my rant on the cover only and have never checked out the guy’s work otherwise. Also, I think I was in a bit of a bad mood when I posted. Like Crumb said, “It’s only lines on paper”. But man, I AM getting sick of all the homages!!

you know, i’m starting to think this feature will go on forever
