The Great Comic Book Cover Homage Streak: Week 71

It occurs to me that it seems like many comic book covers are homages. Which is fine with me. I have no problem with it. It just made me think, though, how long could I go before I hit a week where NO new comic book was released that had a cover that was an homage to something? Let’s find out! Here is an archive of all the cover homages featured in the streak so far!

This week we’ll go with Matt Frank’s cover for Godzilla, Rulers of Earth #8, which is, of course, homaging Kevin Maguire’s classic cover for Justice League Europe Annual #2

Seventy-one weeks down! Will we make it to week seventy-two?

Those of us who do not care about betting on the Super Bowl can place wagers on how long it takes for some one to ‘correct’ Mr Cronin.

Neat cover. IDW should get Byrne to do a Godzilla cover that pays homage to (the first) Fantastic Four 1. Or one based on Avengers West Coast 54.

Well no one is going to do it if you point it out like that. ;)

Brian, why can’t you get your facts right?! It’s an homage to the Cibernetico Forever wrestling event poster.

Not to ruin the gag, but is this the first time we’ve gotten one of these covers in this feature? Because I’d say the original version has (obviously from what we’ve seen here) got to be one of the most homaged covers of all time. OF ALL TIME!

By the by, that JLE Annual is one of the best single issues ever. Great art teams, great stories about various time periods in the DCU, and it’s all wrapped up very nicely.

@Travis–what are you talking about? There’s only been around 30 of them.

mrclam: That page doesn’t even include Maguire’s own homage cover in Defenders, so it’s obviously incomplete.

Cool link. I think the who ever did that is stretching things a bit with some of those covers though…

…or the Authority homage to it, come to think of it. And that’s just off the top of my head.

Yeah, it is right up there with the most homaged covers of all-time, mostly because cover homages really didn’t become a widespread thing until the mid-to-late 1980s.

@buttler & kdu2814

I agree with both of you; some are totally stretches and it’s rather incomplete. That’s why I said, “around 30″. It is a cool site, though, if only to show how totally played out some of these ideas are. Get a load of how many X-Men 136/Crisis 7 ones there are…some creators even went back in time to pay homage to those future issues!

PS- Have I ever said how much I hate homage covers? That said, when JL does parodies of itself, it’s usually pretty funny/clever.
