Month of African-American Comics – The Inheritors #1

All this month I’ll be reviewing different comic books by African-American creators, based on submissions from the actual creators of the comic books themselves. A quick note – since this month is so relatively short, I’ll be featuring an extra comic every week, for a total of 32 comics spotlighted! Here is a list of all the comics spotlighted so far!

Today we take a look at Robert Garrett’s The Inheritors #1 from XMoor Studios, drawn by Elbeni Olena.

The Inheritors #1 opens with a striking set piece that makes it seem like this is a dramatic police drama…

I really love the way that Olena framed that final page.

However, the police drama takes a turn for the bizarre when we learn that the Mayor has superpowers and that is how he has been able to become such a powerful figure. He controls minds! It is a powerful tool to have and our hero cop suddenly finds himself in a terrible, terrible situation.

After the tables are tragically turned on Detective Jefferson, he discovers a second chance, through a mysterious man who can give Jefferson superpowers, as well.

Garrett does a really nice job maintaining the dramatic turns of the story as we see Detective Jefferson slowly but surely recoil as he discovers the true depths of the Mayor’s evilness (not to mention the whole, you know, having superpowers thing) and the reveal of Jefferson’s new abilities at the end is top rate.

Director Chidi Ozieh did a really cool short film based on Garrett’s story here…

A fascinating aspect of The Inheritors is the fact that Garrett has put so much effort into building up the world of this comic and yet he doesn’t even get it all into play in the first issue, it is just there as subtext supporting the rest of the scenes in the issue (the idea that this is a world that USED to have superheroes in it and now these people are the inheritors of that world).

I look forward to the release of #2!
