Comics Should Be Good’s 6th Annual March Madness!!

Welcome to the 2014 DC/Marvel Comic Character Tournament!

As the NCAA basketball tournament goes along, so will a series of polls matching various comic book characters against each other. This year, we’re mixing it up. Instead of voting based on who is your favorite, you’ll be voting on who you think would win in a fight.

The characters I am using are the top 32 characters on each of the DC and Marvel Top 100 Characters List from a couple of years back (with a few omissions – I removed characters who are not in the New 52 for DC). You might differ with some of the rankings or the brackets (a particularly tricky one is differentiating between the low end of “Heavy Hitter” and the high end of “Street Level”). Let’s just take for granted that you will differ and save the time of saying, “A #6 seed? Character X should be a #4 seed!” or whatever, and just vote on what the Selection Committee came up with (especially since I’m not going to be changing anything).

Here are the four regions!!

14. Catwoman

15. Joker

16. Harley Quinn

Here is the tournament bracket – click on it to get the full bracket and feel free to print it out if you’d like (I doubt it fits on one page though).

Bracket

Each competitor has, let’s say, a half hour to prepare (so it’s not like the Hulk just walking up to Lex Luthor and smacking him – Luthor would be prepared), and can use whatever weaponry you figure would be typical for that character (so Punisher can use whatever guns you would expect him to normally use, but he can’t go get, I dunno, the Infinity Gauntlet, or whatever). These are not “to the death” fights, by the way. And if a character is currently dead, just act like the fight happened while they were alive.

Here are the first two regions up for voting!

DC Heavy Hitters, Round 1

Marvel Street Level, Round 1

true batman has a plan for everyone in the DC verse, but maybe not the marvel one.

What’s the point if there is only three possible inter company fights?

These are the only characters DC should publish, a solid 32

10 of 32 are women for DC
8 of 32 for Marvel

And remember, there may be a more likely winner, but no outcome should be called impossible. http://dogfoodforchairs.blogspot.com/2011/04/why-little-jeff-is-sad-when-dc-and.html

Good luck everyone!

And, in an a surprise bonus exhibition match:

Monica Rambeau, Elsa Bloodstone, Aaron Stack, Tabitha Smith, The Captain

vs.

Thomas Blake, Floyd Lawton, Scandal Savage, Peter Merkel Jr., Jeanette

‘sgonna get weird fast.

This again? No offense Brian, but you really need to come up with some new ideas.

I guess I’ll add some alternate formats you could have gone with for March Madness.

Teams
Team HQs
Writer/Penciller combos for four main properties (i.e. Spider-Man, X-Men, JLA, Batman)

I sure others can add there thoughts. I’m just tired off seeing the same results and arguments that show up with this format every year you’ve done it.

We’ve done this topic once before, three years ago. It’s a stupid complaint.

why isn’t doomsday under DC heavy hitters?

I did it my final four is this wolverine vs batman and Superman vs the Hulk.. I have hulk winning if wolverine beats batman… Otherwise its batman…

Not only has it been three years since the last time this one was done — think about how much changes in 12 months of these characters’ published lives! Things change! Arguments differ! Perspectives, available and altered, will very. Annual tournaments would be perfectly valid! Beyond a stupid complaint!

What happens in the case of a draw? I can think of various match-ups where neither hero could conceivably hurt the other.

Superman vs Swamp Thing
Kitty Pride vs almost anyone.

(a draw in the fight that is – not a draw in the votes)

Uhhhh where’s Wally West? He will be in the New 52 in April

Uhhhh where’s Wally West? He will be in the New 52 in April

A quick check of the calendar shows that it is March.

You’re arguing semantics. CSBG held March Madness character tournaments in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. These all featured more or less the same DC and Marvel super hero characters and similar results.

There has been 75+ years of great ideas generated by the industry that could have been used here instead. Look at how the Gawker media blogs change up their various March Madness tourneys every year.

It’s only been 3 years? Wow, time flies!

Nightwing all the way.

You’re arguing semantics.

Nope, that’s what you’re doing to try to back up a stupid complaint. It is not working.

Where’s Stephanie Brown? – She HAS appeared in the New 52 (leading to complaints about Spoilers).
Of course, one panel of her sitting does not give any indication of her current fighting prowess

readerzero – teams were done last year
and most readers can’t guess how good writers and artists are at fighting. This is not [supposed to be a] popularity contest – this is who would win in a fight between…
And I have difficulty imagining a fight between Avengers Mansion and the Baxter Building

“Stupid complaint” Sensitive much?

readerzero – if you believe the difference between picking your favourite and picking who you believe would win in a fight between the 2 is just semantics then you are voting wrongly

BTW, I’m not actually arguing anything. I’m just offering a free suggestion. I work in marketing and communications and so this kind of thing for a living. In my job, we critique work independently from the person doing it, sometimes very harshly. My comments are not a slam on you personally Brian but I see how you could see them as such. Sometimes it’s hard to turn that part of my brain off.

Anyway, this blog has a lot of great work on it, but it seems to be in a bit of a rut content wise. According to the decreased number of comments on most of this blog’s posts and what data I can find on Alexa, CSBG’s readership is declining. My suggestions were I suppose just to prod you to think of new ideas which could potentially create new viewership and discussion.

This is just a character popularity contest and so we end up with generally similar results to previous tournaments and your Top 100 characters votes regardless of how each of these are defined. I suppose this could be an meta statement by Brian, seeing as how reheating the same idea repeatedly is part of what’s killing the comic industry.

As for the potential tourney ideas, they’re just suggestions. There’s countless other ideas that could be used. Maybe gadgets, weapons, trinkets , and magic items. Vote on what’s cooler: the Batarang or the GL ring, Cap’s shield or the Eye of Agamotto, X-O Manowar armor or Michonne’s katana.

@John King, I didn’t imagine it as a actual fight so much as voting on which base you like more (Baxter Building, Four Freedom’s Plaza Avenger’s Mansion Avenger’s tower, Avenger’s Hydrobase, JLA satellite, JLA watchtower, JLA cave HQ, Titan’s Tower, Cobra’s Terrordrome, G.I.Joe’s the Pit, etc…)

“Stupid complaint” Sensitive much?

Just critiquing the complaint. It was a dumb one.

I believe that you are mistaken on the subjective points pertaining to the content and I know that you’re wrong on the objective points pertaining to readership. But thank you for your concern.

By the way, as I see all the comments about what should be different and how they should be better I feel this should be said:

Thanx a lot for putting these, and all the other, crazy surveys together. They do, obviously, take work, thought and time to set up and maintain.

Sure there’s some commonality here and there, but I’ve been talking about superheroes for over 40 years and haven’t gotten bored yet.

Looking forward to the results, and to what’s next.
