DC/Marvel Tourney, Marvel Heavy Hitters Region, Round 3

The third round of voting continues now!

Simply choose which characters you think would win in a (non “to the death”) fight in the following match-up. The voting concludes 48 hours from right now!

Each competitor has, let’s say, a half hour to prepare (so it’s not like Hulk just walking up to Thor and punching him in the face – Thor would be prepared), and can use whatever weaponry you figure would be typical for that character (so Thor can use whatever weapons you would expect him to normally use, but he can’t go get, I dunno, the Infinity Gauntlet, or whatever). Also, a quick word on prep-time. When I say “prepare,” I really mean planning. They can’t, like, do anything to the place where they fight or anything like that. They can just quickly prepare for their opponent.

Enjoy!

nice a little original defenders battle. but had to give it narrowly to silver surfer for don’t think the doctor has a spell against the power cosmic. had to go with hulk for the hulk is just going to get mad during the battle and the madder hulk gets the stronger he gets. even with milnoir who doubt ful the hulk could lift. still got to go with hulk.

I usually go with Thor over the HUlk, assuming Thor’s using Mjolnir and his/its full powers. Usualy when they fight int he comics, Thor sticks to fisticuffs; the most notable time he didn’t, he outright beat the Hulk.

A prepared Strange could hang with the Infinity Gauntlet once. Well, a little at least. So he should have the edge over Surfer in that case.

Same goes for Thor, he can bring a few of his toys and level-up.

Thor would have the upper hand at first – but that would make Hulk angrier!

Surfer/Thor in next round…nice little cosmic kerfuffle.

Surfer v Strange: With the 30 minutes prep, Doc has a solid shot, but it would have to be a quick takedown. Still, I’m going to give the win to the Surfer; he has experience with magic (cf his long history with Mephisto) and a vast amount of power.

Hulk v Thor: Tough. As Omar noted, Thor has an irritating habit of fighting the Hulk hand to hand, which gives an advantage to Jade Jaws. For this round, I’m going to assume that Thor will use his hammer to full effect, and give the win to the God of Thunder.

The outcomes in this region makes zero sense to me, but I’ll try again:

Doctor Strange over Silver Surfer To me, handicapping characters like these require you to focus on what they typically do rather what they can do. “Power cosmic” and “sorcerer supreme” are basically Deus Ex Machina cards that can get dropped on any story at any time. From an offensive stand-point, the Silver Surfer usually flies and fires energy bolts. Defensively, he typically avoids getting hit. Offensively, Dr. Strange likes to entrap opponents. Defensively, he uses a lot of trickery. Therefore, prep time is a bigger advantage.

The Hulk over Thor Because the internet has everything, someone tallied the Hulk vs. Thor match-ups. They are 2-2-29 in 33 fights all time. That is the mother of all toss-ups. The equalizer is Mjölnir, so I gave the edge to the Hulk.

In this week’s A+X Strange shows he has the ability to influence time. When you add that advantage to his already impressive arsenal I have to go with the Supreme one.

Thor vs Hulk. If Thor is smart he will keep his distance and use Mjølner to strike the Hulk repeatedly without getting any blows himself. He will keep hammering Hulk who then get’s angrier and stronger. But as long as Thor doesn’t get hit he will win in the end. The Hulk ages (Old man Logan and Hulk: The end) while Thor has barely aged in 1000 years. Or it could be over quicker if Thor’s amazing feat in Infinity #4 is something to go by. He throws his hammer from the Kree world around the sun and back to kill a baddie. If he can throw a hammer that fast he can easily knock the Hulk into space. And once in space, the next throw will send the Hulk towards the sun. Not sure how much one should trust that issue though, as I was somewhat confused as to how a hammer travelling at near the speed of light at the same time moved slower than the speed of sound.

A lot of people will say that Thor would not use the smart/patient/cowardly strategy but rather meet the Hulk face to faceas a true warrior. While I agree he usually would do that, I go for how he ought to do it, and that would win him the matchup.

The Hulk has fought off entire Avengers teams, including Thor, so I go with Hulk.

Dr. Strange could conceivably win, although Silver Surfer might be able to blast him before he gets a spell off.

I went with Strange and Hulk. Because Hulk is Strongest One There Is.

Old Man Logan was in an alternate reality so I wouldn’t hold stock to that, he was a cannibal! Thor had the better of the Hulk in their match-ups up until Fear Itself where Thor BFR’ed Hulk, who was still conscious before collapsing from the battle and he had to be healed by his father. In Avengers Assemble Thanos used mind control on the Hulk to grab Thor’s arm and knock him out with his hammer with a single blow. In Hickman’s Avengers Abyss uses mind control (which of course shouldn’t happen) on the Hulk to beat up Thor. In fact if you look at how Avengers is written Hyperion is positioned above Thor in terms of strength, having gone toe to toe with he Hulk from the arc I just mentioned. So basically if we’re going by current Hulk v current Thor, Hulk wins fairly easily.

What effect does the power cosmic have on high end magic?

I went with Silver Surfer in the first match up. Kid, I’ve been all over this galaxy, but I’ve never seen anything to convince me that there’s some all knowing force controlling my life!

Thor will only get Hulk mad. That never ends well. For those whose initial are not The Hulk!

Silver Surfer over Doctor Strange. Tough matchup to call, Doctor Strange has some powerful spells but nothing I think that could put the Surfer down for the count.

Thor beats Hulk. This I think was the hardest matchup to judge in the entire tourney so far. These guys have squared off in the past and historically the matchups have gone both ways. I think though that currently Thor seems to be the more powerful of the two. In “Fear Itself” Thor fought the Hulk and another hammer-wielder at the same time and managed to get the better of him. It seems like as time passes and Thor matures he learns more about his abilities and becomes more powerful – this is something that is highlighted in the new ongoing Thor series which shows not only how far Thor has come since the Dark Ages but also how powerful he will be in the future. In the future Thor will be as powerful as Odin is now.
