3 Chicks Review Comics – Episode #068

It’s EPISODE #068!!!3 Chicks Logo 2 - Blue

Inside this episode!

We have a very special guest host joining us for the entire episode, Tim Hanley, author of Wonder Woman Unbound: The Curious History of the World’s Most Famous Heroine, also blogger at Straitened Circumstances, and author of the “gendercrunching” series on Bleeding Cool! Give him a warm welcome.

First up we talk about Tim’s excellent book Wonder Woman Unbound, an absolute must read for anyone with an interest in Wonder Woman or gender in comics, or even just fascinating comics history period.

Next up, a review of the brand new Storm #1 by Greg Pak, Victor Ibanez, and Ruth Redmond. Then a review of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples Saga #21. Since we recorded on Saturday, two days into SDCC, we discuss what’s been released so far – new book announcements from Image, teaser pages of Finch’s Wonder Woman, some movie teasers by Marvel and DC, and a few other interesting bits and bobs. Unfortunately perhaps the biggest announcement relevant to THIS cast, was the Wonder Woman image that dropped later in the day, which, if you haven’t seen it, is here in all it’s “eh” plus ridiculous heeled boots glory.  No dramatic reading this week, but next time, we probably promise!

3 Chicks Review Comics is a podcast featuring female comics lovers and bloggers. Sue from DC Women Kicking Ass and Kelly Thompson from She Has No Head! Tune in to CSBG every other Monday at noon as we review comics and discuss hot topics of the week. In addition to the blogs above, you can also follow us all on twitter as well: Kelly and Sue.  Special thanks to Caanan Grall for our incredible 3 Chicks Logo and to Nik Furious for our awesome 3 Chicks theme song.

another great episode, of course! having Tim on was cool. does he ever do gender crunching for Oni? i looked around at a handful of his columns and he does a ton of different publishers but never Oni as far as i can tell. :\

Thanks, Ross! Tim’s gendercrushing pieces on Bleeding Cool are the best!

I doubt he’s ever done Oni as they’d be tough because they put out so few books in a given month it wouldn’t be much data to mine? Tim can of course weigh in himself, but my feeling is Oni only does a few floppies a month, so it would be hard to compare.

I really enjoyed Mr. Hanley’s book and was very interested in what he had to say on the podcast. I just wish he could have gotten a word in edgewise.

The day Marko and Alana break up is the day love dies.

Good episode, I’m definitely going to check out the WW book. Also, since you recorded this there was of course the big reveal of Diana in Dawn of Justice and no news about any DC or Marvel female led movies. It’ll be interesting to hear your thoughts about that in the next episode!

Oh, and Lucy is doing really well. Do you think that will improve the chances of a Black Widow movie?

@Kelly: ah, i see, i didn’t realize it was only for floppies!

@Brian Lee: I agree we could have done better in talking to Tim about his book, even I was frustrated because I wanted to hear him expand on some things in the book, but it didn’t really happen. This is what happens with unscripted stuff sometimes though, it doesn’t go how you want/expect.

That said, Tim wasn’t there for a traditional interview, he was there to be the “3rd Chick/Co-Host” and his book happened to be so great that we wanted to spotlight it. In retrospect we should have just had him on as a traditional interview.

@Ciro: Agreed.

I can give you a sneak peek of how I feel about the SDCC announcements post cast: Terribly disappointed we didn’t get any Marvel female-led movie announcements. Not surprised, but disappointed. As for the WW costume, I’m not a fan, which is not surprising, because I hate the grim/gritty tone. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but it was about what I expected. The heels are a travesty however.

@Ross: Well, I don’t know that it’s EXCLUSIVELY floppies, but without putting out a good deal of monthly content I just don’t know if there’s enough data? I may be wrong. I’ll ask Tim to stop by and get you a better answer.

I was laughing do hard at the shade about the she-hulk sub artist but did you really spend all that time manaplaining why we can’t have a TV show? Just find a woman like Gina Carano and do it where she’s only green when she hulks out, once an ep, just use make-up. If you can make a beauty and the beast TV show, you can figure this out.
