Inside this episode!

We begin with a review of Emily Carroll’s most excellent graphic novel Through The Woods, a collection of terrifying beautiful tales by Margaret K. McElderry Books! We’ve also got a review of Marguerite Bennett, Jorge Coelho, and Noelle Stevenson’s Boom! series Sleepy Hollow. Next up we have an interview this week with the lovely and charming Ming Doyle. Ming talks all about her upcoming series from Vertigo The Kitchen with writer Ollie Masters, her experiences in the industry, her process, and what she’s up to next. Sue and I also talk about all the cool news that came out of NYCC, and about how much better The Flash tv show is than Gotham. We had some small echoing problems this week, but hopefully it’s not too bad. I am choosing to think of it as “texture” and “effects” for our “spooktacular episode.”

3 Chicks Review Comics is a podcast featuring female comics lovers and bloggers. Sue from DC Women Kicking Ass and Kelly Thompson from She Has No Head! Tune in to CSBG every other Monday at noon as we review comics and discuss hot topics of the week. In addition to the blogs above, you can also follow us all on twitter as well: Kelly and Sue.  Special thanks to Caanan Grall for our incredible 3 Chicks Logo and to Nik Furious for our awesome 3 Chicks theme song.

We begin with an ADVANCE REVIEW for DC’s new Gotham Academy #1 by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, and Karl Kerschl. This is spoiler free, so no worries about listening before you’ve had a chance to read. This releases on 10/1 so make sure to keep your eyes peeled if you haven’t already pre-ordered from your shop! Next up is a review of Copperhead #1 from Image by Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski. Last up (but never least!) is a review of Greg Rucka , Michael Lark, and Santi Arcas’s Lazarus #11 also from Image. Our interview this week is with the incredible Becky Cloonan – co-writer of Gotham Academy, writer of the forthcoming Southern Cross from Image with artist Andy Belanger, writer/artist of the Eisner nominated Demeter and The Mire, and all around badass. After the interview we talk a bit about some of the recent TV/Comics news, Sue has my FAVORITE dramatic reading yet and, after the bumper, we argue about Wonder Woman’s invisible jet, which I maintain is totally stupid.

Then a review of the previous week’s She-Hulk #7, the best issue yet for the new series, brought to you by Charles Soule, Javier Pulido, and Muntsa Vicente. Kevin Wada did the gorgeous cover seen below.  Up next we have an interview with Black Widow writer Nathan Edmondson. Finally Sue managed to find an adorable DRAMATIC READING. Enjoy!

*sidebard: we had a bit of trouble with audio difficulties this week – just imagine while you listen that I am Rob Brydon’s famous “small man trapped in a box.” And if you haven’t seen The Trip, you all should get on that. Greatest. Show. Ever.

We have a very special guest host joining us for the entire episode, Tim Hanley, author of Wonder Woman Unbound: The Curious History of the World’s Most Famous Heroine, also blogger at Straitened Circumstances, and author of the “gendercrunching” series on Bleeding Cool! Give him a warm welcome.

First up we talk about Tim’s excellent book Wonder Woman Unbound, an absolute must read for anyone with an interest in Wonder Woman or gender in comics, or even just fascinating comics history period.

Next up, a review of the brand new Storm #1 by Greg Pak, Victor Ibanez, and Ruth Redmond. Then a review of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples Saga #21. Since we recorded on Saturday, two days into SDCC, we discuss what’s been released so far – new book announcements from Image, teaser pages of Finch’s Wonder Woman, some movie teasers by Marvel and DC, and a few other interesting bits and bobs. Unfortunately perhaps the biggest announcement relevant to THIS cast, was the Wonder Woman image that dropped later in the day, which, if you haven’t seen it, is here in all it’s “eh” plus ridiculous heeled boots glory.  No dramatic reading this week, but next time, we probably promise!

We of course manage to talk a little bit about that tiny little film you may have heard about Captain America: Winter Soldier and some Batman things like how fantastic Gotham Central was and how we miss it. For comics news we talk about the huge Thor announcement and The Girl Who Would Be King film option…will Kelly’s superheroines be the first ladies to be the leads in a superhero film??? That would be epic. Because you guys were very good this week, we’ve also got a couple dramatic readings by Sue.

Inside this episode! A review of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s new book from Image – Sex Criminals #1 as well as a review of the triumphant return of The Powerpuff Girls #1 from IDW by Troy Little. There’s no guest this week (schedules!! amirite?!) We discuss some of our “comfort comics” that we return to time and time again over the years – feel free to sound off in the comments about some of your comfort comics! Also on deck is a discussion of Superheroines on film in general and a surprisingly in-depth spontaneous Kickstarter/self-publishing conversation. After the credits stay tuned for a small peek at Sue’s and my third (is that right?) Batfight. I didn’t include the whole fight cause frankly, we sounded like assholes and I couldn’t bear to publish the whole thing…but I figured you guys deserved a peek at least. And I don’t know why the only the thing we fight about are things related to Batman…that probably is deserving of further analysis. Enjoy, kids!

Inside this episode! A review of Jeff Parker and Jonathan Case’s Digital First Batman ’66 #1 and a review of Prudence Shen and Faith Erin Hicks Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong. Faith and Prudence then join us to talk about all things Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong, their process, how the book came about, SDCC 2013, and what’s up next for them. We did have some serious technical challenges on this cast, whether it was because we had four people on, the addition of Canada, or something else who knows, but I apologize for the quality which is below our usual level. We’re also back to hell hot levels of summer in NYC so you can hear the constant irritating hum of my window unit. My kingdom for a recording studio! Or just central A/C. Anyway, last, but certainly not least, we have an all new DRAMATIC READING from Sue, and you don’t want to miss it! This week’s dramatic reading comes from an excellent piece by Scott Mendelson on Forbes.
