Rock on Christine Valada! She's been tearing it up on Jeopardy! since Monday.

Julie and I are huge nerds and we love Jeopardy! so it's been really fun for us watching Mrs. Len Wein continue to hammer her opposition... especially since a three-day total of around $36,000 will probably go a long way towards restoring their home after the disastrous fire not too long ago. Check your local listings and tune in tonight, and let's hope her winning streak continues!

In other news, we're taking some students along to the upcoming Seattle Comic-Card show and we will be seeing Mr. Wein there, which should be a lot of fun. I'm rooting around in the archives to see if I have anything on this list. I need to thin the herd anyway and this is certainly a good cause. I encourage you folks out there to do the same.

Wow, we've sure had some fiery debates spring up in the comments threads recently! From how much gay should be allowed in comics, to the cost/benefit analysis of dead celebrities' contributions to mankind versus their more nefarious proclivities, to the apparent mob mentality that springs up whenever certain comic creators' names are mentioned in conversation-- well, it's been an incendiary few days. We've all said some things we shouldn't have-- bad jokes, in my case, but that's a habit that's unlikely to fade.

Finally, though, there's a place for our fine commenters (commentators?) to go when they can't agree to disagree in polite, civilized tones. I present to you The Almighty Bitching Thread, at our very own forum, where one may continue exercising their free speech well after the originating entry has fallen off the first page and all order and sanity has left the building. And that way, everyone's in one place when the building eventually burns down.

Well, that, or we can all calm down and make nice. I enjoy seeing massive amounts of comments, but I prefer said comments to be jovial in nature. Comics should be good, and so should their readers. After all, we don't want Overlord Cronin to nuke us all from orbit.

Passed away of a heart attack at age 58.

According to Wikipedia and this thread on the Soap Operus forums, started by a man who knew him.

Howard avoided publicity and didn't do interviews, so I can't give you much detail on his life. Wayne Howard started in the industry working for Will Eisner(!) and spent time in Wally Wood's studio, sometimes ghosting for Mr. Wood. Later on, Howard did a few job for Marvel and DC inking Marvel Team-up and Wonder Woman, but the bulk of his work was for Charlton, including...

or, better yet....

A title Howard, solo, conceived. He also drew the covers for the book, did much of the interior art, colored, inked, and lettered, occasionally scripted and was creator-credited BY NAME on the cover - An unheard of practice for Charlton comics at that time. (Or ever.)

Midnight Tales, especially, is a favorite of mine - Heck it's my all-time favorite Horror Anthology title periodfullstop. Instead of a single, Crypt-Keeper style narrator, the heroes of the series were Professor Coffin and his exceedingly comely niece Arachne who pull double duty - sometimes acting as observers, sometimes active participants in the stories. It's a funny, sexy, all-round enjoyable comic series, scary only when you least expected it.

Sadly, Howard left the comics industry in 1983.

I never met him, but I had a hell of a lot of respect for his work.

I think the major strength of Howard's art was it's unpredictablity: The camera would swoop down and slide, telling the story from eight or nine different angles on a single page, until static shots were rare enough to mean something. The panels themselves would alternate between near George-Perez level detail (check the above and below covers) and uncluttered, one-or-two figure drawings depending on the story's immediate needs. On top of this story-based-randomness, Howard had a psychologist's eye for body language - Look at how much personality every one of the figures has in the image below.

I would unhesitatingly call him one of the unrecognized greats of his generation. And I know I'm not alone. I remember buying back issues at a Detroit Convention and ending up in a half hour long conversation with five or six strangers about how much we liked Wayne Howard's work and how sad it is that he's stuck in relative obscurity. So RIP, Mister Howard. Thanks for giving us as much of your work as you did, but we selfishly wish there had been more.

Howard is survived by his wife and one student, the last of the Wally Wood school.

My pal, Ryan Kirk, is doing a Top 50 Cartoonists thing at CBR, and it reminded me that it has been about a year since I last did the Top 100 Writers and Artists thing, so I figured it was high time to do a new one! This time, though, I am opening up responses from ANYone, not just CBR members!

The question is - who are your favorite Marvel and DC characters (and yes, when I say "top" in the title, I just mean "your favorite," I know that confused some people last time)?

So everyone, please pick your Top 10 all-time favorite DC Comic characters, specifying which character you mean if it is a legacy character, like Green Lantern or Flash (including Vertigo and Watchmen, just not counting anything from Wildstorm, V for Vendetta or licensed comics, and All Star and Elseworlds characters count as separate characters) and your Top 10 all-time favorite Marvel characters, specifying which character you mean if it is a legacy character, which is rare in the Marvel Universe (not including licensed characters or Icon or Epic books, and Ultimate characters count as separate characters). So it'll be two lists, with 10 people on each list).

You then rank your favorites 1-10 (with 1 being your favorite, 2 second-favorite, etc.).

For each first place vote, the character will get 10 points. For every second, 9 points, etc.

I will let folks vote until 11:59 pm EST, September 9th, so we can get as many votes as possible (the more votes cast, the better the results are)!

Voting is really easy. Simply e-mail me (let's use bcronin@comicbookresources.com for this one, okay?) with your 10 favorite DC characters and your 10 favorite Marvel characters. Just vote by e-mail. Don't vote in the comments section, especially because I'd prefer for the results to be pretty secretive.

You must pick 10 characters per list for your choices to be counted!

Starting September 10th, I'll count down the results, AFI-style, with the Top 50 DC Comic Characters and the Top 50 Marvel Comic characters.

Okay? Start voting!!!

NOTE: The following groups count as one character (I'll add more as it becomes appropriate):

Female Furies
Metal Men
Inferior Five
Warriors Three
Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur
Legion of Substitute Heroes
Red Ghost and the Super-Apes
We3

The following groups do not count as one character:
X-Statix - Too many great, distinct characters
Power Company
Thunderbolts
GLA/GLX/GLI

Regarding Legion of Superheroes characters, please specify which version you mean (pre-Zero Hour, Post-Zero Hour, Current series).

And for characters like Hank Pym and/or Robbie Baldwin, vote for whichever costumed identity you would like (just one per character, though, so no Speedball AND Penance), but I'll be combining the votes at the end (so a vote for Penance is the same as a vote for Speedball).

If any ruling you were confused by makes you wish to revise your list, just e-mail me a revised list (make sure you say "Revised List" in the title, though)
