What I bought – 16 March 2011

For Vida, that moment was the beginning of happiness, and in that happiness, like some kind of disease, the beginning of her titanic jealousy, which stayed with her forever and finally drove her to her grave. Because one dies of happiness sooner than of misery. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

More free comics! I don't think Korvac can really throw a good punch when he's standing like that Things get even freakier! What's up with Hope's feet? That's what happens when you don't tie your shoes! I don't know what he's looking at! They just dig his threads, man! No, I didn't get the Brereton cover - you wanna make something of it? What I bought – 17 November 2010

If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of those you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. (Ernest Hemingway, from A Farewell to Arms)

The chick on the cover looks NOTHING like the chick inside - it's two different artists, but come on! Gotta love the yellow oval! Do the Republicans know that Batman is selling us out to the United Nations? Why is the Russian girl a Rastafarian? He looks more like a dandy than a punk, doesn't he? Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!! A photo cover! Well, he doesn't look pleasant It's all dark and spooky!!!! What's she looking at? Is he moving? He's blurry! That hand needs to clutch that gun more securely, I reckon WTF? A Greg Land cover I don't hate? Has the world gone mad?!?!?!? Their dentists' bills must be astronomical! Why so very dark? Zombie Vikings!!!! Or are they Viking Zombies? More historical fiction! Yay! More Talbot goodness! Secret societies RULE! Alternate dimensions RULE!

Fuqua! Snipes! What's not to love? Yay! More craziness! That cover looks vaguely Matrix-y I can't stop singing the title of this comic to the tune of 'Islands in the Stream' You sure know what you're getting with Gulacy art!

Box of Comics: After Dark #0 & The Royal Historian of Oz #1

One foolproof way to guarantee my purchase of a new comic book single is to only charge one (1) American dollar for it. (As a wise man once said, “I’d buy that for a dollar!“) The first-one’s-a-buck philosophy has been floating around comics for a few years now, providing a spike in sales and awareness, lessening the impact of any potential buyer’s remorse. Vertigo has been at the forefront of the lone greenback game, but some other publishers have ventured into the business, as well. Let’s take a look at a one dollar introduction that works, and one that does not.
