“I wish life was like banking,” I said. “I don’t mean it’s straightforward. Some of it’s incredibly complicated. But you can understand it in the end, if you try hard enough. Or there’s someone, somewhere, who understands it, even if only afterward, after it’s too late. The trouble with life, it seems to me, is that it can turn out to be too late and you still haven’t understood it.” (Julian Barnes, from Talking It Over)

Believe me, everything looks like a noose if you stare at it long enough. (Sherman Alexie, from “Indian Education”)

It was not the sufferings of the maimed and the dead that pained him, but the very absence of that pain; he could not forget those terrible scenes, the blood and mud, the bundles of squirming flesh, but, remembering, he felt nothing, nothing, and this emptiness horrified him. (John Banville, from Doctor Copernicus)

But the Gospels actually taught this:

“Before you kill someone, make absolutely sure he isn’t well connected.” (Kurt Vonnegut, from Slaughterhouse-5)

I probably don’t have anything new to say, but what the heck, right? We’re all friends here!

“Your profession?”

“Poet.”

“Poet? But what do you really do?”

“I write poetry.” (Jerzy Kosinski, from Blind Date)

This issue smells good! This issue, on the other hand, doesn't smell quite as good I suspect I know why this book is delayed, but I'm not saying! Ass: front and sort-of center! So much RAGE!!!!! He loves his work! Your eyes don't deceive you ...... those mice ARE riding hummingbirds! World War I action! Okay, when she gets fat, I chuckled What cheesecake? Amadeus reads his own comics! Those beads have to hurt when they slap against her legs Is this the greatest comic in the history of humanity? It's all nerdy and shit! There you are! Action ahoy! See, that's just not very nice ... Oh, the wackiness! Will he ever run out of bad sitcoms? An Arcana comic? TWO Arcana comics?

I have always pitied poor Abraham. Here he had the sword from his sheath, only seconds away from slitting his son’s throat, and he had to sacrific a ram in his son’s place. What a disappointment it must have been. What a damn tragedy. (Jeremy Leven, from Creator)

This cover feels all Seventies, man! Are they tiptoeing so they don't wake the students up? 'Why are the readers so dim?!?!?!?!' Considering all that happens in this comic, this cover could have been a lot cooler As neat as this cover is, the variant is wicked awesome! I like the way the bullet is spraying numbers out of the dude's skull Sigh. Yet another tremendous cover in this series! Monthly? Um, yeah, maybe not This just proves it: Chicks shouldn't make comics, man! Ken Hale sez: Even though I'm a gorilla, you still wish you wuz me! Yet more propaganda! Things get worse. I know, shocking. This is monster huge, man! More Darwyn Cooke goodness! You know, you don't have enough gore in your lives! More comics goodness than you deserve! In case you're wondering, yes, J. Bone is awesome I love this uncluttered cover Who drinks pink tea? I don't even have to read this to know it's awesome! Damned landscape printing!

For it is a general rule of human nature that people despise those who treat them well and look up to those who make no concessions. (Thucydides, from History of the Peloponnesian War)

This is the much better of two covers! Man, that leg shouldn't bend that way, should it? He got punched so hard math came out of his mouth! At least it's not called Mouthbreather! Dig that crazy cover, man! You don't want to see that in the middle of the blizzard! There's a light snack! Lawrence of Arabia does not appear too often in this book, but he gets the cover! How adorable! Colin Ferrell likes his penis substitute! It just keeps getting freakier! Is this on life support? This series would be a lot better if this scene actually appeared in it! Well, this looks freakin' awesome! Even though the anatomy of this cover is somewhat strange, the interior works looks stupendous! This has Kelly Thompson written all over it! So does this, in fact!

I watched Count Tolstoy leave and thought how it is not he who knows the truth who is right, but he who is convinced of the truth of his lie. (Milorad Pavić, from Landscape Painted With Tea)

Alex Ross doesn't always do a great job with these covers, but he nails this one! She should just fight him with those nipples! Dire Wraiths REPRESENT! It takes a second to figure it out, but that's a keen cover! Oh, Tom Scioli, you wonderful bastard! Man, her feet must hurt! It's all symbolic and shit! It's Creeper-iffic! It's all done, and I can't wait to read it! I'm sure this will be cheery!

What I bought – 3 March 2010

I looked through the Gideon Bible in my motel room for tales of great destruction. ‘The sun was risen upon the Earth when Lot entered into Zo-ar,’ I read. ‘Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of Heaven; and He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.’

So it goes.

Those were vile people in both those cities, as is well known. The world was better off without them.

And Lot’s wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people and their homes had been. But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human. (Kurt Vonnegut, from Slaughterhouse-5)

Dazzler has nothing on Mirage! I should point out that Guillory drew this in October - that's how far ahead they were at one point! So very icky! Seriously, JHWIII - what the fuck? I still don't get why anyone would bet against She-Hulk! Is the ornate weaponry just for kewlness, or will it be explained? Holy shit, that's a gorgeous cover! Worth the wait! That Fox sure is crafty!

“The more civilized we become, the more horrendous our entertainments,” Frex said. (Gregory Maguire, from Wicked)

This is kind of a misleading cover, as the dude isn't in it that much, but it's still pretty keen Batman should get some carbs in him! CHOMP! Check out that Williams cover! Another cool cover by Alan Davis! So much drama! I hate that trade dress so much! Warning: This scene actually takes place inside the comic! Yes, a little dude with a big cleaver shows up in this book I hope she at least didn't let Doom take some of her gum!
