What I bought – 29 September 2010

Neither of the two people in the room paid any attention to the way I came in, although only one of them was dead. (Raymond Chandler, from The Big Sleep)

This is the end, my only friend, the end ... Pure, unadulterated awesome! Pulp at its pulpiest best! Yeah, I don't know what's going on either with this cover - I just enjoy the drawing! Oh, that's not going to end well There has to be a more efficient knife he can use! Man, I love Brereton's art! Daisy's wearing a push-up bra underneath that leather! Yes, I should have gotten this years ago, but at least I got it, right?

“It never occurs to you that the beautiful princess and the wicked old witch believe exactly the same thing: Anything at all, including cunning and lies, will work for the beautiful; nothing helps the ugly.” (John Gardner, from Freddy’s Book)

She looks like she's Abraham, about to sacrifice Isaac! These have been dull but effective covers It's FRICKEN! Farewell, Ex Machina ...... you'll be missed Rose Red decides it's ass-kickin' time! Bisley's covers crack me up! Only the coolest own jungle cats as pets! I love this cover It's all iconic and shit! Don't do it, Steve! More Western fun! What I bought – 21 and 28 July 2010

Society had tamed the erratic fellow by co-opting him into the mainstream. For its largest threats, society reserves success. (Richard Powers, from Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance)

Giant robot runs wild! Film at 11! Ride, Brucie, ride! There's more action on the cover than almost the entire book! That cover is just two panels from the book - couldn't they have spruced up the covers a bit? It's Jaime Hernandez!!!!! That cover doesn't make a lot of sense Continuing the grand tradition of cheesecakery!!!! Ka-Blooooey!!!!!! Man, Bisley is wacky! Buckingham is really doing a nice job on these covers Man, those pants are close to going down! You can practically hear the ringing of the hammer on steel! Who is this crazy snake bitch?!?!?!?! Cosmicky! So scary!!!! I love how the kid wants Thor to sign his copy of issue #1 Look at that wonderful cover! That can't bode well! Seriously with that cover? It's like he's leaping right at you!!!! I wish Brother Night was cooler, man! No good can come of this! Why does he have the stuff on his face? It's the Seventies, maaaaannnnn! It's all about the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, man! Who doesn't love the giant tiki statue with lightning-discharging eyes?!?!?!?

What I bought – 16 June 2010

Let us not be deluded by forms of government. The word may be republic in France, constitutional monarchy in Prussia, absolute monarchy in Austria, but the thing is the same. Wherever there is a vast standing army, the government is the government of the sword. (Benjamin D’Israeli, 1852)

Ms. Kelly Thompson didn't like this cover, but I kind of dig it! Yes, it's girl-on-girl action - you gotta problem with that? Ruas' covers just creep me out, man! It's the semi-annual issue! Hot damn, Bisley's covers kick ass! Dynamite manages to get a Green Hornet crossover into this book, which is quite a trick! Calling central casting! Nothing's tougher than a cat smoking a cigarette! Spooktacular! I wonder if there is any lamentation of the women in this comic? A work of staggering genius? I think so! Chicks with swords sell like hotcakes! It's all optical illusiony!

What I bought – 19 May 2010

They hated Thomas for his courage, his brief moment as a bird. Everybody has dreams about flying. Thomas flew.

One of his dreams came true for just a second, just enough to make it real. (Sherman Alexie, from “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”)

3-D Man's arm makes it look like Jimmy has a multicolored moustache, which I think would improve his chances with the ladies! I totally want someone to send me that postcard! They should use the Bat-Phone in the 'real' Bat-titles! Big pictures split into many covers often look weird, like this one does You know, conceptually, this is a dumb cover, but it just looks so gorgeous! This cover has nothing to do with what's inside, but it's still kind of neat! I love this comic a little more each issue, I tells ya! Overcompensating much, King Richard? This is a really misleading cover You there! Yub ym koob! What is it with those guys from Perth? Yet more Vertigo crime! Whoo-hoo! Well, this is going to get messy
